Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Baby: A Concise and Practical Guide for the Use of Mothers in the Care and Feeding of Infants and Young Children The acute infectious diseases (diphtheria, scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles, etc.) have not been mentioned because they are, without exception, conditions which should be treated by a physician. In case of sickness, no mother or nurse should depend upon any book in caring for a baby, but upon the advice of a physician, who should be one well trained and experlenced in diseases peculiar to children. If a baby is sick, the physician ought to be summoned at once; and in no case should a mother attempt to prescribe for her child - disregard of this rule has caused thousands of lives to be lost. This book is not intended to supplant or to be a substitute for the physician; therefore prescrip tions have not been given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Babies: A Guide to the Practical Care of the Mother and Young Child I feel it is due my readers to explain why I have written better babies. Of course, my basic reason for so doing is my ever-pres ent desire to see a world filled only with bet ter babies, and toward that end I have worked for years, devoting myself almost exclusively to the treatment Of infants and young children. I felt that the medical profession would never fully perform any real service for humanity until the diseases of children were given the universal care, attention, and interest which they merit. Book Healthy Babies

Download or read book Healthy Babies written by S. Josephine Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Healthy Babies: A Volume Devoted to the Health of the Expectant Mother and the Care and Welfare of the Child The methods and advice given in this book on care of babies are, first of all, intended to be used in keeping babies well. The book is in no sense intended as a method of treating sick babies, nor should the advice that is given ever take the place of the individual care that can be offered by a doctor. The methods of keeping babies well are simple and easy, but the methods of curing babies after they are sick are difficult and often complicated. It has been proved over and over again that babies can be kept well with very little effort, and that any intelligent mother can learn all that is needful to assure good health in her baby. There are certain minor forms of illness which can be corrected or cured simply by readjustment of the hygiene of the baby's life or perhaps by the use of some simple household remedies, and there is no reason why the mother should not know and apply the proper treatment in cases of this kind, but if actual illness occurs there should be no delay in obtaining the help of a qualified physician. Saving babies has proved to be one of the most interesting and satisfactory types of health work that has ever been carried out in this, or any other country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian Baby in Print: Infancy, Infant Care, and Nineteenth-Century Popular Culture explores the representation of babyhood in Victorian Britain. The first study to focus exclusively on the baby in nineteenth-century literature and culture, this critical analysis discusses the changing roles of an iconic figure. A close look at the wide-ranging portrayal of infants and infant care not only reveals how divergent and often contradictory Victorian attitudes to infancy really were, but also challenges persistent clichés surrounding the literary baby that emerged or were consolidated at the time, and which are largely still with us. Drawing on a variety of texts, including novels by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Mrs Henry Wood, and Charlotte Yonge, as well as parenting magazines of the time, childrearing manuals, and advertisements, this study analyses how their representations of infancy and infant care utilised and shaped an iconography that has become definitional of the Victorian age itself. The familiar clichés surrounding the Victorian baby have had a lasting impact on the way we see both the Victorians and babies, and a critical reconsideration might also prompt a self-critical reconsideration of the still burgeoning market for infant care advice today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mother and Baby: Helpful Suggestions Concerning Motherhood and the Care of Children The excuse - if one is needed - for add ing one more book on this subject to the great number already in the market is that it contains a few simple and easily under) stood suggestions for mothers on the care of children, more stress being laid on the every-day, commonplace requirements than is usually the case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care of the Baby: A Manual for Mothers and Nurses, Containing Practical Directions for the Management of Infancy and Childhood in Health and in Disease IT seems often to be taken for granted that the young mother will understand by a sort of intuition the care which her baby requires, as though it needed no more than a newborn animal of some lower order of life. The fact is that such a little animal, Slight though its needs are when compared with those of a baby, has a parent which by instinct is far better able to care for it than is the human mother for her child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Healthy Baby: The Care and Feeding of Infants in Sickness and in Health The author's chief reason for writing this book was to make clear to the mother just how to do best the ordinary everyday things that every mother has to do for her child. He believes that there is a definite need for a book, which will describe in the minutest detail the daily care of the baby. The description or treatment of any but the simplest ailments has purposely been left out, because a book of this sort which attempts in any way to describe dis eases, does more harm than it does good. A well-trained physician or a specialist in chil dren's diseases finds it difficult enough at times to diagnose the difierent afi'ections, and it only confuses the mother or nurse to describe the different diseases to her.
