With this volume, colleagues, graduates and friends want to celebrate her philosophical oeuvre. Her entire life’s work has been characterized by both humanitarian and humanist commitment: to seek the principles of justice in the co-existence of human beings, but that philosophy also provides the basic yardstick, to highlight distortions on recent theories. Her philosophical work is alive with the commitment to a philosophy which is compelled to seek the principles of greater justice and solidarity

Book Nietzsche as a Scholar of Antiquity

Download or read book Nietzsche as a Scholar of Antiquity written by Anthony K. Jensen and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically, the first decade of Friedrich Nietzsche's career is considered a sort of précis to his mature thinking. Yet his philological articles, lectures, and notebooks on Ancient Greek culture and thought - much of which has received insufficient scholarly attention - were never intended to serve as a preparatory ground to future thought. Nietzsche's early scholarship was intended to express his insights into the character of antiquity. Many of those insights are not only important for better understanding Nietzsche; they remain vital for understanding antiquity today. Interdisciplinary in scope and international in perspective, this volume investigates Nietzsche as a scholar of antiquity, offering the first thorough examination of his articles, lectures, notebooks on Ancient Greek culture and thought in English. With eleven original chapters by some of the leading Nietzsche scholars and classicists from around the world and with reproductions of two definitive essays, this book analyzes Nietzsche's scholarly methods and aims, his understanding of antiquity, and his influence on the history of classical studies.

Book The Fall of Humankind and Social Progress

Download or read book The Fall of Humankind and Social Progress written by Arttu Mäkipää and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the link between human capabilities and the preconditions for social progress through an engagement with the theological anthropology of Swiss theologian Emil Brunner (1889–1966). It places Brunner’s thought in dialogue with selected contributors from the contemporary social sciences, examining approaches from economics, sociology and philosophy as put forward by Gary S. Becker, Christian Smith and Martha Nussbaum. This dialogic format helps to crystallise both agreements and differences and thus facilitate greater understanding between theology and other disciplines. Questions explored in the discussion relate to the emergence of human nature (the person) and the capabilities human beings possess, as well as how these develop in a social context. The author focuses in particular on the impact of sin (the Fall) and considers the mixed blessings of economic progress. By providing pointers on how to bring back the human person in social disciplines, the book hopes to contribute to improved understanding of the ethical dimension of social progress and human flourishing. It will be of particular interest to scholars of analytic and systematic theology, but also scholars from economics and social sciences with openness to theological engagement.

Download or read book Words become Worlds written by Ellen van Wolde and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By carefully analyzing the text-semantic features of the texts of Genesis 1-11, this book offers a quite new perspective on the primaeval history. The first part of the book examines Genesis 1-11, which is usually read as a creation story concerning the human being in relation to God, in which the human being falls from bad to worse. In these text-semantic studies it is shown that such is not the case, especially in the rather exciting analysis of the story of the Tower of Babel. In the second part of the book the methodological framework of these text-semantic studies is presented.

Book The Challenge of Life

Download or read book The Challenge of Life written by Kunz and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1971 F. Hoffmann-La Roche & Co. Ltd in Basel celebrated their 75th anniversary. The company was one of the first in the chemical industry to concentrate from the beginning on pharmaceuticals. Step by step new activi ties were taken up, but all within the frontiers of biology. During the 75 years of Roche the research division has become by far the largest department in the company, with basic research assuming an increasingly important part in it. For this reason Roche cannot but feel a share of res pons i bility towards the many problems raised by biomedical progress. Hence, the idea of celebrating the anniversary along conventional lines could not be seriously entertained. The occasion was to show Roche at work. A special kind of work certainly, breaking away from the daily routine into the sphere offree communi cation with thinking people outside the purview of the company's usual tasks.
