Book Whare de yea belang

Download or read book Whare de yea belang written by Bill Griffiths and published by McNidder & Grace. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where de yea belang?brings together the distinctive vocabulary of the North East dialect. "Abackabeyont, bait-poke, cracket, drucken, etten, fettle, guissie pigs, lonnin, marra, nyen, plote, queen-cat, reckling, skinch, tew, upcast, vine, willok, yem, zookers!" If you enjoy finding out about dialect words – how and where and when they were used – and where they came from – this is the best guide to help you explore the world of North East dialect. Until the 20th century, dialect was a marker of economic, social and cultural change. We know that the North East maritime connections with the Dutch led to the introduction of many 'new' words. The Scottish influence of the keelmen (fisherman) on the Tyne and their effect on local language was much more radical. Although the Tyneside dialect and identity and this way of speaking is fast waning, the popularity of discovering this language and dialect shows there is still a great interest in the languages and dialect of the past. The late Bill Griffiths (1948–2007)was an extraordinary writer and poet: radical, experimental and scholarly, but also had a great sense of humour. He was a wonderful champion of the North East, its people and heritage. Born in Middlesex, he read history before graduating in 1969. Bill ran his own independent press and published political pamphlets and essays on the arts and poetry. After gaining a PhD in Old English he fled London and settled in Seaham where he embraced the northern way of life. 'He was also a scholar of Old English and dialect who know how to make his work accessible. Private and uncompetitive, he was at least these things: poet, archivist, scholar, translator, prison-rights campaigner, pianist, historian, curator, performer, editor, short-story writer, essayist, teacher, book-maker and lyricist. The Saturday before he died, Bill discharged himself from hospital to host the Dialect Day at the Morden Tower in Newcastle upon Tyne. He died as he lived: cataloguing, awarding Best Dialect prizes, opera on his radio, the poetry paramount.' Obituary, The Independent, 20 September 2007.

Book Protestant Theology and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century Netherlands

Download or read book Protestant Theology and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century Netherlands written by Arie L. Molendijk and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protestant Theology and Modernity in the Nineteenth Century Netherlands examines how Dutch Protestant thinkers and theologicans met the challenges of the rapidly modernizing world around them. It shows that the nineteenth-century saw theology fundamentally transformed and reinvented in a variety of ways. Enlightenment values were fiercely attacked by orthodox Pietists but embraced by 'modern' theologians. Positions were not fixed and theologians has to work hard to maintain their intellectual integrity. Jewish Isaac da Costa converted to Christianity and fulminated against the Zeitgeist. Allard Pierson, who in his youth had been under the spell of Da Costa, resigned from his ministry and adopted an 'agnostic' stance. Abraham Kuyper modernized theology and politics, by laying the foundations of 'pillarization' (the segmented social structures based on differences in religion and worldview) of Dutch society. Abraham Kuenen revolutionized the study of the Old Testament, and Protestant theologians made ground-breaking contributions to the emerging science of religion. This book used in-depth studies of a small number of significant and influential Protestant thinkers to analyse how they addressed specific modern transformation processes such as political modernization, the pluralization of world views, and the emergence of critical historical scholarship. It also considers the significant Dutch contribution to the historical-critical study of the Bible, and the emergence of the modern comparative study of religion.

Book Broken Soul

Download or read book Broken Soul written by Tina Irene Lynch and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Broken Soul, the author tells the story of her mother's alcoholism, and fanatic love for her father; which nearly destroyed her entire family from the late 1940's to the present. She believed that her baby brother suffered the most, and was also let down by the local agencies which should have come to his rescue. The author expresses how her father's side of her family may possibly contain DNA of high achievers, which led her to compare her family's life experiences with her father's extended family, especially a cousin who rose up to become President Obama's appointed US Attorney General. The author later determined that her brother and her cousin played opposite roles at the justice department since as a teenager, her brother served a life sentence in prison for murder. He served his time at Attica State Prison during the infamous 1971 riot; and due to his high achievement capability, he became one of the first prisoners in the nation to be awarded a BA degree (he majored in psychology) while serving his time in prison. He had never even completed elementary school before going to prison. Her brother played a part in developing the prison's college program while still an inmate, where he worked immediately upon his release. There was also an eighty–five–year–old cousin who formerly owned a gas station in Rocky Mount, North Carolina back in the Jim Crow era, which was unheard of at the time. The family also includes a cousin who retired in his early thirties from the Philadelphia Phillies as a major–league baseball player. Today he is an author and sports analyst for ESPN Sports TV. The story follows her brother's painful journey, from the beginning of his childhood, until his early death ended his suffering. The journey takes us deep into the reasons why so many souls die, unable to be resuscitated. The journey caused her brother a broken soul!
