Book excerpt: When Shane, Kian, Mark, Nicky and Bryan celebrated the beginning of 2001 in true Irish style, they had no idea of the adventures that lay ahead. Eddie Rowley, co-author of Ronan Keating's bestselling autobiography Life is A Rollercoaster, followed Westlife on their biggest ever world tour. From Dublin where they attempted their first dance routine ('look lads, no stools') via Wembley to the Far East, it was a mad whirl of hotels, screaming girls, late night parties and McDonald's hamburgers. It was their most expensive tour ever, and certainly the most exhausting! Along the way we witness the ups and downs of the boys' lives in the sometimes dangerous, sometimes lonely goldfish-bowl world of pop. And through it all we get to see in unprecedented detail the true personalities that make up the phenomenon that is Westlife. A rip-roaring read and the most penetrating look yet at the UK's most successful boy band- ever.

Book Michael Jackson and the Blackface Mask

Download or read book Michael Jackson and the Blackface Mask written by Harriet J. Manning and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blackface minstrelsy, the nineteenth-century performance practice in which ideas and images of blackness were constructed and theatricalized by and for whites, continues to permeate contemporary popular music and its audience. Harriet J. Manning argues that this legacy is nowhere more evident than with Michael Jackson in whom minstrelsy’s gestures and tropes are embedded. During the nineteenth century, blackface minstrelsy held together a multitude of meanings and when black entertainers took to the stage this complexity was compounded: minstrelsy became an arena in which black stereotypes were at once enforced and critiqued. This body of contradiction behind the blackface mask provides an effective approach to try and understand Jackson, a cultural figure about whom more questions than answers have been generated. Symbolized by his own whiteface mask, Jackson was at once ’raced’ and raceless and this ambiguity allowed him to serve a whole host of others’ needs - a function of the mask that has run long and deep through its tortuous history. Indeed, Manning argues that minstrelsy’s assumptions and uses have been fundamental to the troubles and controversies with which Jackson was beset.

  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book My Side of Life written by Shane Filan and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a lead singer of Westlife, one of the most successful pop acts of all time, Shane Filan was on top of the world. Together with the band he achieved an incredible 14 No.1 singles (a record beaten only by the Beatles), sold 44 million records, and was adored by fans the world over. Everything he touched turned to gold, or so it seemed. Like many others, he had piled his fortunes into the Irish property boom, and when the bubble burst, Shane struggled with mounting debt. Just ten days after Westlife's final farewell concert, in front of a sold-out crowd of 80,000 fans, Shane was declared bankrupt with debts of 18 million--losing everything. But this wasn't the end for Shane Filan--a devoted singer and family man, Shane circled back to his roots and a year later he launched his solo career. In My Side of Life Shane shares his story for the first time--his early years growing up as part of a large Irish family in Co. Sligo, the phenomenal success of Westlife, and the ups and downs of their time together, the breakup of the band, his financial devastation, and finally going it alone as a solo artist. This is Shane's side of the story.

Book East West Life Expectancy Gap in Europe

Download or read book East West Life Expectancy Gap in Europe written by C. Hertzman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-08-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the procedings of an "Advanced Research Workshop," held under the auspices of the NATO International Scientific Exchange Programme, on the Environmental and Non-environmental Determinants of the East-West Life Expectancy Gap in Europe. The workshop brought together individuals from Eastern and Western Europe and North America who had a common interest in understanding the evolution of the relative declines in life expectancy in Central and Eastern Europe, compared to the West, over the past 30 years. Between 1989 and 1993, I carried out a series of investigations into the effects of environmental pollution on human health in Central and Eastern Europe, at first, under the auspices of the World Bank, and later, under a broader multilateral, multi-agency arrangement known as the "Environment for Europe" Process. These investigations provided unparalleled access to environmental health data from the region, and offered a glimpse of what the contribution of pollution to health status was, and what it was not. At the same time, the Program in Population Health of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIAR) and the International Centre for Health and Society (ICHS) at University College, London, were embarking upon multi-disciplinary inquiries into the broad determinants of health in modern societies. The work of the CIAR provided a framework for conceptualizing the East-West life expectancy gap and its potential determinants; the work of the ICHS provided specific insights into the relative contributions of these determinants.

  • Author : Richard Anderson
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • Pages : 395 pages

Download or read book Bespoke written by Richard Anderson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true-life story of a boy who quit school to become an apprentice on Savile Row, home to London's most venerable tailors, and wound up owning his own shop on the world-famous 'Golden Mile', where he hand-cuts exquisite suits for a clientele including royalty, politicians, literati, business tycoons, and media stars. On a bright, bitterly cold and snowy morning in January 1982, 17-year-old Richard Anderson made his way with his father to an interview at Savile Row's illustrious Henry Huntsman & Sons. They were late, but Richard got the job, with its meagre salary of only £2,000 a year, and his life was changed forever. Huntsman was arguably the world's most prestigious tailoring house, and Richard's apprenticeship proved a humbling ordeal overseen by three titans of the trade: the formidably debonair Colin Hammick, fellow chain-smoker and grumpy eccentric Brian Hall, and Dick Lakey, the company's heroically overworked 'leg man'. Training under these men in the arcane art of making trousers and coats that could cost as much as £10,000 was an inspiring but also gruelling game, yet 'Young Richard' persisted for 17 more years of rigorous practice in perfectionism and prestige - to become, at 34, the youngest head cutter in Huntsman's 150-year history. Witty and told with great candour, Bespoke is a fascinating behind-the-scenes exposé of life on Savile Row from one of the world's most celebrated and successful tailors.

'Engagingly warm' Heat 'Sensational' The Mirror'Ronan Keating demolishes his 'Mr Perfect of Pop image in a new warts-and-all book of his amazing ride to stardom.' The MirrorRonan Keating is a very real idol. He may be only 23 but he has lived an extraordinary life so far, from playing football on a housing estate in North Dublin to headlining Madison Square Garden with Elton John. But Ronan has never forgotten it's his fans that got him there. It's an inspirational story of a boy from modest beginnings who confounded the critics and made his mark with talent, boyish good looks and, above all, an integrity that has helped him move from the teen market to a broader, adult audience. In a surprisingly honest, remarkably frank style he talks openly of his background and his beloved mother, Boyzone's extraordinary catapult to fame, his friends and band-mates and his new solo career and his wife and son. Dozens of firsthand accounts from journals and autobiographies of the era form a rich and detailed story that shows how life in the backwoods and on the prairie mirrors modern life in many ways--children attended school and had daily chores, parents worked hard to provide for their families, and communities gathered for church and social events. Book Aspects of Sexuality in Vita Sackville West s Life and Writing

Download or read book Aspects of Sexuality in Vita Sackville West s Life and Writing written by Susanne Busch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-05-27 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Dresden Technical University (Fakultät für Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaften Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: 'Sexuality in Britain from Victorian Times to the 1960s', language: English, abstract: This paper aims to analyse some aspects of sexuality in three of Vita Sackville-West’s novels in close connection with the author’s own attitudes towards the topics. The question was whether or not Sackville-West’s ideas and experiences are reflected in her writing. By comparing biographical material about Sackville-West with the contents of her novels, it was possible to find some similarities and common ground. I chose the following three novels in order to discuss the position of women, marriage in general, sadomasochism and female relationships:All Passion Spent(1931),The Dark Island(1934) andNo Signposts in the Sea(1961). Vita did not need to write because of economic pressure, she was highly privileged and therefore did not have to write anything she did not want to, however, the restrictions social and political principles imposed on her did not allow Vita to use everything she might have imagined to write about. Although Sackville-West is not representative due to her aristocratic status, she shares the fate of having to live a married life despite being homosexual with most of the lesbians at the beginning of the 20th century. This apparent contradiction arouses the question of how she coped with this duality and whether writing did help her in dealing with the different aspects of her personality.
