Book Westland Fixed Wing Aircraft 1915 1953

Download or read book Westland Fixed Wing Aircraft 1915 1953 written by David Gibbings and published by . This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book provides a detailed history of Westland from its earliest days. The text was first published in 1991 and revised and updated in 1995. The author was fortunate in acquiring the collaboration of Harald Penrose who for so many years was the Westland test pilot. This new Fonthill edition will be a welcome addition to aviation history. Westland began by building numerous de Havilland, Short, Sopwith, and Vickers types before embarking on its own designs, beginning with the N.1B single-seat seaplane for the Admiralty. There followed a wide variety of types, military and civil, some long-forgotten and others still remembered with affection. These included the ungainly Walrus, the impossible-to-describe Dreadnought, the Widgeons, several Pterodactyls, the beautifully proportioned Wizard, the famous Wapiti, the Wallace, Lysander, Whirlwind, Welkin and Wyvern. The first airplanes to fly over Everest came from the Westland stable. Now AgustaWestland, part of the Finmeccanica group, Westland concentrates on helicopters and has produced a successful family which serves the Royal Navy and the RAF as well as many of the world's armed forces. The technical and operational histories of all these types are fully detailed in this volume which is profusely illustrated with photographs and general arrangement drawings.

Book Westland and the British Helicopter Industry 1945 1960

Download or read book Westland and the British Helicopter Industry 1945 1960 written by Matthew R.H. Uttley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explains how Westland dominated British helicopter production and why government funding and support failed to generate competitive "all-British" alternatives. In doing so, the book evaluates broader historiographic assumptions about the purported "failure" of british aircraft procurement during the early post-war period and considers the scope and limitations of licensed production as a government-mandated procurement strategy.

Book Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics

Download or read book Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics written by J. Gordon Leishman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-12-23 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicopters are highly capable and useful rotating-wing aircraft with roles that encompass a variety of civilian and military applications. Their usefulness lies in their unique ability to take off and land vertically, to hover stationary relative to the ground, and to fly forward, backward, or sideways. These unique flying qualities, however, come at a high cost including complex aerodynamic problems, significant vibrations, high levels of noise, and relatively large power requirements compared to fixed-wing aircraft. This book, written by an internationally recognized expert, provides a thorough, modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and other rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Every chapter is extensively illustrated and concludes with a bibliography and homework problems. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students, practising engineers, and researchers will welcome this thorough and up-to-date text on rotating-wing aerodynamics.

Book American Airpower Comes Of Age General Henry H Hap Arnold s World War II Diaries Vol II Illustrated Edition

Download or read book American Airpower Comes Of Age General Henry H Hap Arnold s World War II Diaries Vol II Illustrated Edition written by Gen. Henry H. “Hap.” Arnold and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the Aerial Warfare In Europe During World War II illustrations pack with over 180 maps, plans, and photos. Gen Henry H. “Hap.” Arnold, US Army Air Forces (AAF) Chief of Staff during World War II, maintained diaries for his several journeys to various meetings and conferences throughout the conflict. Volume 1 introduces Hap Arnold, the setting for five of his journeys, the diaries he kept, and evaluations of those journeys and their consequences. General Arnold’s travels brought him into strategy meetings and personal conversations with virtually all leaders of Allied forces as well as many AAF troops around the world. He recorded his impressions, feelings, and expectations in his diaries. Maj Gen John W. Huston, USAF, retired, has captured the essence of Henry H. Hap Arnold—the man, the officer, the AAF chief, and his mission. Volume 2 encompasses General Arnold’s final seven journeys and the diaries he kept therein.

Book The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics written by Frank Hitchens and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics was written for pilots at all levels from private pilot to airline pilot, military pilots and students of aerodynamics as a complete reference manual to aerodynamic terminology. General aerodynamic text books for pilots are relatively limited in their scope while aerodynamic text books for engineering students involve complex calculus. The references in this book, The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics, are clearly described and only basic algebra is used in a few references but is completely devoid of any calculus - an advantage to many readers. Over 1400 references are included with alternative terms used where appropriate and cross-referenced throughout. The text is illustrated with 178 photographs and 96 diagrams. The Encyclopedia of Aerodynamics is an ideal aerodynamic reference manual for any pilot's bookshelf.

Book Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion

Download or read book Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion written by Ahmed F. El-Sayed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive basics-to-advanced course in an aero-thermal science vital to the design of engines for either type of craft. The text classifies engines powering aircraft and single/multi-stage rockets, and derives performance parameters for both from basic aerodynamics and thermodynamics laws. Each type of engine is analyzed for optimum performance goals, and mission-appropriate engines selection is explained. Fundamentals of Aircraft and Rocket Propulsion provides information about and analyses of: thermodynamic cycles of shaft engines (piston, turboprop, turboshaft and propfan); jet engines (pulsejet, pulse detonation engine, ramjet, scramjet, turbojet and turbofan); chemical and non-chemical rocket engines; conceptual design of modular rocket engines (combustor, nozzle and turbopumps); and conceptual design of different modules of aero-engines in their design and off-design state. Aimed at graduate and final-year undergraduate students, this textbook provides a thorough grounding in the history and classification of both aircraft and rocket engines, important design features of all the engines detailed, and particular consideration of special aircraft such as unmanned aerial and short/vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. End-of-chapter exercises make this a valuable student resource, and the provision of a downloadable solutions manual will be of further benefit for course instructors.
