Excerpt: Modern Western square dance (also called Western square dance, contemporary Western square dance, modern American square dance or modern square dance) is one of two types of square dancing, along with traditional square dance. As a dance form, modern Western square dance grew out of traditional Western dance. The term "Western square dance," for some, is synonymous with "cowboy dance" or traditional Western square dance. Therefore this article uses the term "modern Western square dance" to describe the contemporary non-historical dance which grew out of the traditional dance. Modern Western square dance, like traditional square dance, is directed by a square dance caller. In modern Western square dance the caller strings together a sequence of individual square dance calls to make a figure or sequence. These calls are the building blocks of the choreography that is danced by the individuals, square dancers, in the squares. There are eight people (four couples) in each square; at a dance there may be many squares. Generally speaking, each of these squares dances independently of each other, with the exception of specialty or "gimmick" dances, where there might be some crossover of dancers from one square to another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics, old-time musician and flatfoot dancer Philip Jamison journeys into the past and surveys the present to tell the story behind the square dances, step dances, reels, and other forms of dance practiced in southern Appalachia. These distinctive folk dances, Jamison argues, are not the unaltered jigs and reels brought by early British settlers, but hybrids that developed over time by adopting and incorporating elements from other popular forms. He traces the forms from their European, African American, and Native American roots to the modern day. On the way he explores the powerful influence of black culture, showing how practices such as calling dances as well as specific kinds of steps combined with white European forms to create distinctly "American" dances. From cakewalks to clogging, and from the Shoo-fly Swing to the Virginia Reel, Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics reinterprets an essential aspect of Appalachian culture.

Book The Art of Western Square Dance Calling

Download or read book The Art of Western Square Dance Calling written by Jessica Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western square dance calling is a dynamic mixture of speech and singing. Callers come from different backgrounds; some begin as singers, others begin calling because they are avid square dancers. Because of the popularity of Western square dancing in both North America and abroad, callers hail from regions across the United States and throughout the world. I chose ethnography as my research method because I am interested in studying contemporary Western square dance calling practices. I focused on the calling of one individual, Jack Pladdys, because Cincinnati dancers consider him a skilled caller. Pladdys began calling in 1982 and called professionally for several years. For ten successive weeks, I observed Pladdys calling and teaching a weekly Western square dance class at the Wyoming Civic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. By observing Western square dance activities and by interviewing square dance participants, including square dance organization officers and Jack Pladdys, I gained knowledge of the contemporary Western square dance tradition in Cincinnati. In this thesis, I define Western square dance terminology related to callers' activities, discuss musical aspects of calling, and identify teaching methods used by callers. Additionally, I develop a list of calling characteristics in their order of relative importance in Cincinnati, Ohio. Through my research and writing, I attempt to begin the process of documenting the traits that distinguish a Western square dance caller as "good" within a specific community of Western square dancers. By documenting the techniques involved in successful calling, I hope to enhance the small body of research on contemporary Western square dance practices.
