Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Siskiyou County spreads its picturesque bounty across the mountains of California between the Sacramento Valley and the Oregon border. Encompassing such magnificent wonders as the Klamath National Forest and the Marble Mountain Wilderness-Primitive Area, Western Siskiyou County enjoys a rich history. The Shasta and Karuk tribes have inhabited the area for thousands of years, and they thrived in this rugged landscape before Russian fur trappers arrived in the 1830s. The dauntless Native Americans and subsequent settlers have employed gold, timber, ranching/farming, and recreation to support their community since 1850. A new history, Western Siskiyou County: Gold and Dreams pays homage to the citizens who made this land home. These captivating stories are revealed through both word and image, echoing the voices of the past that speak of struggle, sacrifice, and the courage and perseverance needed to triumph over the wilderness. Stunning photographs and heartfelt narrative commemorate the people, places, and events that set this diverse community apart. Readers will be enchanted by tales of the largest gold nugget discovered during the gold rush in Scott Bar, the destructive great flood of 1861-1862, and the baseball craze that seized the county in 1911 when the Etna team won 13 games in a row. Western Siskiyou County: Gold and Dreams introduces new generations of Californians to an abundant paradise boasting green 500-foot canyons and snowcapped 8,000-foot peaks.

Book Yreka Western Railroad

Download or read book Yreka Western Railroad written by Matt Starman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Yreka was determined to have a railroad. When the Southern Pacific Railroad decided in 1883 to bypass Yreka, the citizens constructed their own railroad known as the Yreka Railroad Company. This railroad managed to eke out a living over the next few decades. In the 1930s, the railroad was reincorporated as the Yreka Western Railroad. By the mid-1930s, the railroad went bankrupt and was forced into receivership, and a new manager was put in charge. Through perseverance of the new manager, the railroad began to grow and prosper. By the late 1970s, the railroad once again started to decline, but as in the past, it managed to hold on. In 1986, the railroad started an excursion train known as the "Blue Goose," and steam locomotive No. 19 was added in 1989. Throughout all the hardships, the railroad still continues today and has been given the nickname "the Little Railroad that Refuses to Die."

Book excerpt: Complete with all the trappings of a Wild West gold-mining town, Yreka was incorporated in 1857. Within six weeks of the discovery of gold in 1851, over 2,000 miners had arrived, and a town of makeshift wooden and canvas shelters suddenly appeared, forming the beginnings of what was to become the city. Today Yreka is Siskiyou Countys government center. Its National Historic District encompasses both a lovely residential section and charming commercial district, offering a glimpse into the late 1800s. The Golden City boasts over 75 structures from the 1800s and early 1900s, wrought by the founders of Siskiyou Countys gold, agricultural, and timber industries and preserved by Yrekas community today.
