Download or read book Black River written by S. M. Hulse and published by HMH. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel of sorrow and suspense, set in rural Montana, is “a complex and powerful story—put Black River on the must-read list” (The Seattle Times). Wes Carver returns to his hometown—Black River, Montana—with two things: his wife’s ashes and a letter from the parole board. The convict who once held him hostage during a prison riot is up for release. For years, Wes earned his living as a correction officer and found his joy playing the fiddle. But the uprising shook Wes’s faith and robbed him of his music; now he must decide if his attacker should walk free. With “lovely rhythms, spare language, tenderness, and flashes of rage,” S. M. Hulse shows us the heart and darkness of an American town, and one man’s struggle to find forgiveness in the wake of evil (Los Angeles Review of Books).

Book excerpt: Winner of the Staunch Book Prize. “A beautifully written and expertly structured medieval mystery packed with intrigue, drama and shock revelations.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune An extraordinary new novel by Samantha Harvey—whose books have been nominated for the Man Booker Prize, the Women’s Prize for Fiction (formerly the Orange Prize), and the Guardian First Book Award—The Western Wind is a riveting story of faith, guilt, and the freedom of confession. It’s 1491. In the small village of Oakham, its wealthiest and most industrious resident, Tom Newman, is swept away by the river during the early hours of Shrove Saturday. Was it murder, suicide, or an accident? Narrated from the perspective of local priest John Reve—patient shepherd to his wayward flock—a shadowy portrait of the community comes to light through its residents’ tortured revelations. As some of their darkest secrets are revealed, the intrigue of the unexplained death ripples through the congregation. But will Reve, a man with secrets of his own, discover what happened to Newman? And what will happen if he can’t? Written with timeless eloquence, steeped in the spiritual traditions of the Middle Ages, and brimming with propulsive suspense, The Western Wind finds Samantha Harvey at the pinnacle of her outstanding novelistic power. “Beautifully rendered, deeply affecting, thoroughly thoughtful and surprisingly prescient . . . a story of a community crowded with shadows and secrets.” —The New York Times Book Review “Ms. Harvey has summoned this remote world with writing of the highest quality, conjuring its pungencies and peculiarities.” —The Wall Street Journal “Brings medieval England back to life.” —The Washington Post

Download or read book Intercultural Experience in Narrative written by Michał Wilczewski and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically investigates intercultural experiences of Polish managers and specialists delegated by their multinational company (MNC) on an international assignment to China. The book employs narrative inquiry to explore language, intercultural communication, collaboration, learning, and expatriate adjustment in the MNC. This approach offers new insights into intercultural experiences, communication, and cultural challenges faced by an under-researched group of professionals exposed to intensive collaborations with the local managers and employees. The findings also illustrate how the expatriates learned to better navigate the multicultural and multilingual business context and what factors facilitated and inhibited their learning and adjustment. Encouraging the qualitative, context-sensitive examination of expatriate-local personnel interactions, the book will be an invaluable source for scholars and practitioners interested in, among others, novel approaches to investigating language and intercultural communication in international business, cross-cultural management, qualitative cross-cultural research, as well as for lecturers and students interested in Central Europe and China.

Download or read book The Applicability of Western Management Practices in LDCs written by Annette Julien and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Nowadays firms have to interact on the international level to pursue their business. In doing this they might be conducted to deal with LDC firms or even establish a subsidiary in a developing country. The aim of this study is to examine to what extent Western management practices are applicable to specific LDCs environments. First the main differences between in business environment are highlighted. Then the whole lifecycle of establishing and managing a venture abroad will be discussed critically. Results are always presented in a concrete and practical form to that managers might use it as a handbook. Every organisation functions as an open system and is affected by the demographic, cultural, economic and political specificities of his surroundings Management practices are also determined by their environment. It is hence substantive to comprehend social underlying values and attitudes when dealing with colleagues and workers, as well as to grasp the reasons and dynamics of the political and economical framework. This necessity is emphasised in developing countries as brusque changes in a company s domain might have serious consequences if the management is taken unaware. To reduce environmental risks and allow a company to plan its activities it can be useful to set up an information system and become conscious of one s own cultural determination as a first step toward cultural empathy. Some aspects of Indian management are presented as a conceptual framework for the second part, where the experience of French and Germany companies will be integrated. It may also serve as an example to follow when analysing a country s work culture. India seems to be a collectivist, feminine country with a low uncertainty avoidance and high power distance. Though this may explain the predominance of a nurturant-task leadership style, a whole multitude of management styles ca be found across industries. The entry strategy decision in a LDC can be facilitated by analysing the transaction cost and the strategic motivations of the foreign company. Foreign direct investments can take the form of joint-ventures or WOSs, within which flexibility, control and risk differ. Restrictive governmental regulations often bias the deliberation by urging towards the joint-venture, as part of development policies. Selecting a compatible partner and negotiating the venture s contractual base need careful proceeding as many future problems can be [...]

Download or read book Asian versus Western Management Thinking written by Kimio Kase and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Navigating paradigm changes is a critical element of business leadership: analog to digital; brand to retailer to consumer; reason to emotion; West to East. Anything that illuminates these powershifts is valuable for the fast-moving decision-maker, and in this respect Asian versus Western Management Thinking is a first-rate inquiry into cultural business behaviors. Insular frameworks of thinking and action matter less by the second. I'm an And/And practitioner and my experience of bridging business between East and West, and vice versa, suggests we need to know the human distinctions that matter and the harmonies that will matter even more. Between the covers of this book by Kimio Kase and colleagues, business moves forward.' Kevin Roberts, CEO Worldwide, Saatchi & Saatchi, Lovemarks Company 'Having lived and worked my entire life in various countries around the world, I agree with the authors' premise that Asians and Westerners often approach business problems from different angles. Rather than focusing on differences, I welcome the strength that comes from diversity. As my experience at Renault and Nissan has demonstrated, the richest solutions come when ideas are challenged or questioned by people who have a different perspective. This book illustrates the value of accepting diverging ideas as a fact of life that can be used to enhance the world in which we all live and work.' Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Renault-Nissan Alliance 'A most welcome addition to the unbalanced management literature about the 'analytical' West and the 'synthetic' East. For too long the field has been dominated by comparisons of cultural value systems which paradoxically tell us precious little about how habits of mind influence management thinking and practice in different parts of the world over time. At a time when the world's economic centre of gravity is visibly shifting to Asia, this really is a most timely book.' Nigel Holden, Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds, UK

The objective of this book is to examine leadership from the Western perspective through the eyes of some scholars of leadership. From the Islamic perspective, leadership is examined against the background of the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of our Beloved Messenger Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), as well as the guided Caliphs and previous Prophets of Allah starting from Prophet Adam (PBUH) up to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). This book is for everyone irrespective of their background and what they do in life. At the same time it is a guide for those who aspire to be leaders purely for the pleasure of Allah on earth and who take their jobs and every activity as a form of worship without expecting anything in returned like power or money.
