Book excerpt: "The West Virginia University Mountaineer isn't just a mascot: it's a symbol of West Virginia history and identity that's embraced throughout the state. Folklorist Rosemary Hathaway explores the figure's early history as a backwoods trickster, its deployment in emerging mass media, and finally its long and sometimes conflicted career-beginning officially in 1937-as the symbol of West Virginia University"--

Book Alumni Record West Virginia University

Download or read book Alumni Record West Virginia University written by West Virginia University and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alumni Record, West Virginia University: May, 1917 The alumni of any institution of learning are its greatest asset and the closer the connection between them and the Alma Mater the better. For this reason your Alma Mater has made. It a special task as one of the features of the celebration of its fiftieth anniversary to hunt out as far as possible the graduates, of these fifty years and list them anew and mail this list to every living alumnus. Many of these alumni had not been heard from for several years and ten are still missing at this writing. The 1500 now living and found are scattered through forty-four states, nine foreign countries, District of Columbia, Porto Rico, and the Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds have remained in West Virginia and are found in the lead in all trades, professions and occupations, a body of men and women of whom any institution may justly feel proud. During the early years of the University lists of alumni were published from time to time as part of the-annual catalogue. A more complete list, The Alumni Record, prepared by Waitman Barbe was published by the Alumni Association in 1903. In 1913 an Address List of' Alumni was prepared by James Scott Stewart, Waitman Barbe and David Dale Johnson, an editorial committee appointed by the Board of Regents. Book excerpt: Here's a book that I'd strongly recommend to Senator Dan Quayle, the man who supported the war in Vietnam, but decided that the fighting would go on without his direct participation. The book in question is Peaceful Patriot by Bonni McKeown. It's the story of a man who did not believe in the war in Vietnam, who declared himself a conscientious objector, who allowed himself to get drafted, who became a combat medic, & who was killed while trying to reach a wounded soldier in a firefight on February 11, 1969 - just about the time Senator Quayle took his draft physical & then made arrangements to get into the National Guard. Tom Bennett of Morgantown, WV, received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat. He was the second CO ever to win the nation's highest military award. He did it while serving without a weapon with B Company, First Battalion, 14th Infantry of the Fourth Infantry Division near Pleiku. Just this summer, the Army named a new youth recreation center at Schofield Barracks after Bennett, one of the true American heroes of the Vietnam War.

Book The Girl Who Smiled Beads

Download or read book The Girl Who Smiled Beads written by Clemantine Wamariya and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The plot provided by the universe was filled with starvation, war and rape. I would not—could not—live in that tale.” Clemantine Wamariya was six years old when her mother and father began to speak in whispers, when neighbors began to disappear, and when she heard the loud, ugly sounds her brother said were thunder. In 1994, she and her fifteen-year-old sister, Claire, fled the Rwandan massacre and spent the next six years migrating through seven African countries, searching for safety—perpetually hungry, imprisoned and abused, enduring and escaping refugee camps, finding unexpected kindness, witnessing inhuman cruelty. They did not know whether their parents were dead or alive. When Clemantine was twelve, she and her sister were granted refugee status in the United States; there, in Chicago, their lives diverged. Though their bond remained unbreakable, Claire, who had for so long protected and provided for Clemantine, was a single mother struggling to make ends meet, while Clemantine was taken in by a family who raised her as their own. She seemed to live the American dream: attending private school, taking up cheerleading, and, ultimately, graduating from Yale. Yet the years of being treated as less than human, of going hungry and seeing death, could not be erased. She felt at the same time six years old and one hundred years old. In The Girl Who Smiled Beads, Clemantine provokes us to look beyond the label of “victim” and recognize the power of the imagination to transcend even the most profound injuries and aftershocks. Devastating yet beautiful, and bracingly original, it is a powerful testament to her commitment to constructing a life on her own terms.
