Book The Mohicans of Stockbridge

Download or read book The Mohicans of Stockbridge written by Patrick Frazier and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A stirring story, much more humanly complicated than any Cooper had to tell, or indeed than has been told by previous historian. . . . Individual anecdotes Frzier has turned up might be the subjects of whole novels."--Boston Globe. "With extensive research in primary sources, Frazier's account deserves praise for its insights into the uncharted waters of eighteenth-century Indian history."--Choice "Immortalized by James Fenimore Cooper in The Last of the Mohicans, the Mohicans Indians originated in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Frazier, a specialist in Native American studies with the Library of Congress, presents a detailed, scholarly account of these Indians; he hopes to make his readers aware of the contributions they made to American history. He covers the Mohicans' conversion to Christianity and the ramifications this had for them. He examines the various ways they interacted with the settlers, both Dutch and New Englanders, in trading, and as soldiers and victims of expansion and alcohol. Frazier has done extensive research and uses solid documentation."--Library Journal "The calm suggestiveness of The Mohicans of Stockbridge makes it a model for future studies of native peoples."--Times Literary Supplement. Patrick Frazier has been employed by the Library of Congress since 1959, most recently as a reference specialist on North American Indians. His publications include Portrait Index of North American Indians in Published Collections and a forthcoming guide to North American Indian collections in the Library of Congress.

Book Henry Knox and the Revolutionary War Trail in Western Massachusetts

Download or read book Henry Knox and the Revolutionary War Trail in Western Massachusetts written by Bernard A. Drew and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-01-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the winter of 1776, in one of the most amazing logistical feats of the Revolutionary War, Henry Knox and his teamsters transported cannons from Fort Ticonderoga through the sparsely populated Berkshires to Boston to help drive British forces from the city. This history documents Knox's precise route--dubbed the Henry Knox Trail--and chronicles the evolution of an ordinary Indian path into a fur corridor, a settlement trail, and eventually a war road. By recounting the growth of this important but under appreciated thoroughfare, this study offers critical insight into a vital Revolutionary supply route.

Download or read book Ghosts of Berkshires written by Robert Oakes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-12 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You’ll never look at the region the same way again after reading about the tunnel from hell, toe-tugging spirits, and the curse of the mummy.” —The Boston Globe Before it became a haven for arts and culture, the Berkshires was a rugged, sparsely populated frontier. From the early days of Revolutionary fervor and industrial enterprise to today’s tourism, many chilling stories remain. A lost girl haunts a cemetery in Washington, and mysterious spirits still perform at Tanglewood. From the ghostly halls of the Houghton Mansion to the eerie events at the Hoosac Tunnel, residents and visitors alike have felt fear and awe in these hills, telling tales of shadow figures, disembodied voices and spectral trains. Author Robert Oakes, who has given ghost tours at The Mount in Lenox for more than a decade, leads this spirited journey through history. “The rich history of this region—spanning more than two centuries—includes spine-tingling tales from almost every town in the county. Oakes culled many of them for his book, which touches on myriad metaphysicals, including ‘The Undead Hessian of Egremont,’ ‘Highwood’s Ghost at Tanglewood,’ and ‘The Ghostly Guest in 301: The Red Lion Inn’—each of which will inspire readers to ‘peer into the shadows beyond the beam of [their] flashlight.’” —The Berkshire Edge

Download or read book Reading American Art written by Professor and Department Head of Art & Art History Elizabeth Milroy and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology brings together twenty outstanding works of recent scholarship on the history of the visual arts in the United States from the colonial period to 1945. The selected essays--all written within the past two decades--reflect the interdisciplinary character of current art historiography in America and the variety of approaches that contribute to the dynamism in the field. The authors take up diverse subjects--from colonial portraits to nineteenth-century sculptures of women to photographic images of New York--and invite those with a general knowledge of the history of American art to think more deeply about art and culture. Employing many interpretive methodologies, including iconology, social history, structuralism, psychobiography, and feminist theory, the contributors to this volume combine close analysis of specific art objects or groups of objects with discussion of how these works of art operated within their cultural contexts. The authors consider the works of such artists as John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock as they assess how paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photographs have carried meaning within American society. And they investigate how the conceptualization, production, and presentation of works of art both inform and are informed by prevailing attitudes toward the role of the arts and the artist in American culture.

Book The Evacuation of Shekomeko and the Early Moravian Missions to Native North Americans

Download or read book The Evacuation of Shekomeko and the Early Moravian Missions to Native North Americans written by Karl-Wilhelm Westmeier and published by Lewiston, N.Y. : Edwin Mellon Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive handwritten Moravian sources, but also using ethno-historical methods, this study evaluates the approach of the missionaries and the Native Americans' response in light of the reactions of the colonial whites who desired the destruction of the mission. It explores the conflict between Church/mission and State/society in view of Americanization processes, examining early American racism and its effects beyond the closing of Shekomeko to the Native American communities at large, especially with regard to their growing resistance to the Christian message. It seeks to contribute not only to missiology but also to the ethnohistory of America and anthropology and sociology, especially in the narrower fields of peace and racial studies.
