Book excerpt: During the 1960s and the following decades, a significant number of artists and craftspeople began moving to West Cork, Ireland, following their dream of a simple life in an unspoiled landscape. They were attracted to West Cork in particular by the stunning landscapes and low property prices, but as the creative community grew, it became an attraction in its own right. For a brief period, a rare combination of circumstances existed in the region which facilitated the growth of arts and crafts in West Cork and gained the region a glowing reputation for its unique culture, combining a 'laid back' life style with traditional country living. West Cork Inspires tells the story of the creative community in West Cork and profiles twenty-two of its most outstanding protagonists.

The killer couldn't have escaped Inisrun, but no-one was charged with the murder. The mystery that surrounded the death of Nessa remained hidden. But the islanders knew who to blame for the crime that changed them forever. Ten years later a documentary crew arrives, there to lift the lid off the Kinsella's carefully constructed lives, determined to find evidence that will prove Henry's guilt and Keelin's complicity in the murder of beautiful Nessa. Book excerpt: In this “delicate slow burn of a novel” (Jan Carson), a woman’s marriage and career are threatened by an old indiscretion just as she receives the opportunity of a lifetime—from the award–winning author of the “extraordinary” (Colum McCann) Dinosaurs on Other Planets. Nessa McCormack’s marriage is coming back together again after her husband’s affair. She is excited to be in charge of a retrospective art exhibition for a beloved artist, the renowned late sculptor Robert Locke. But the arrival of two enigmatic outsiders imperils both her personal and professional worlds: A chance encounter with an old friend threatens to expose a betrayal Nessa thought she had long put behind her; and at work, an odd woman comes forward with a mysterious connection to Robert Locke’s life and his most famous work, the Chalk Sculpture. As Nessa finds the past intruding on the present, she realizes she must decide what is the truth, whether she can continue to live with a lie, and what the consequences might be were she to fully unravel the mysteries in both the life of Robert Locke and her own. In this gripping and wonderfully written debut, Danielle McLaughlin reveals profound truths about love, power, and the secrets that define us.

Book excerpt: The scale of the Great Irish Famine, and the horror of it, were unprecedented. It permeated everything, the traces of which remain to this day. But the visual dimensions of the loss of life and the erosions of language and culture remained unaddressed until Quinnipiac University opened Ireland's Great Hunger Museum in 2012, to considerable acclaim. As a largely invisible trauma whose consequences were intrinsic to the subsequent development of Ireland - no less than the United States - the museum collects and displays images and supporting documentation that address both the lacunae and interconnections in representations of the Great Hunger in Irish and diasporic history, culture, and memory. Now, mindful of the suffering of so many, a large number of whom nonetheless went on to contribute so much to America, Quinnipiac University brings its collection home, to share with the people of Ireland. Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger is an important act of cultural reconnection with Ireland's past and living diaspora, and is a major cultural, educational, and tourist event of local, national, and international interest.

Book Mary Carbery s West Cork Journal 1898 1901 Or From the Back of Beyond

Download or read book Mary Carbery s West Cork Journal 1898 1901 Or From the Back of Beyond written by Mary Carbery and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After her husband, the ninth Lord of Carbery, died at an early age, Mary Carbery, recently arrived from England, was left the solitary mistress of the vast neo-medieval Castle Freke. These journals trace Mary's growing attachment to a wild, alien countryside and its people. Set on a remote headland in West Cork, the journals chronicle the last days of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy when the Carberys of Castle Freke and others such as their neighbours, Somerville and Ross, seemed secure in their position, little knowing the changes the next century would bring. The story concentrates on the Carberys' poorer neighbours and tenants, the descriptions of which are made through sketches of local characters and customs, folklore and fairytales, trades and traditions.

Book Signifying Place

  • Author : Sheila Gaffey
  • Publisher : Routledge

Download or read book Signifying Place written by Sheila Gaffey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a socio-semiotic analysis of promotional materials used by both producers of quality products and their support organizations, this book investigates the use of imagery, especially images of place, in three contrasting regions of Ireland. It highlights the role of place (particularly rural) imagery in the promotion of handcrafts and rural tourism services, and suggests some of the meanings which may be contacted through the use of such imagery. Much of the research to date in this field has concentrated on the use of imagery to promote particular places, rather than products and, in an Irish context, on the promotion of Ireland as a tourism destination. This book focuses on the regional and local level to examine the creation and use of more micro-place specific images - both real and mythical - by small and medium sized businesses and explores the extent to which the two industries borrow from, and feed into, firstly each other, and secondly, macro place myths and iconographies.
