Book excerpt: "Globally, industrialization and urbanization are leading to improvement in society's economic condition which is often accompanied by lifestyle changes including physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and harmful use of tobacco and alcohol. These altered lifestyles bring about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like obesity, hypertension (HTN) and diabetes mellitus (DM). The risk factors of the lifestyle induced NCDs are measurable and largely modifiable. So, continuous surveillance on the levels and patterns of risk factors is of fundamental importance to control NCDs. Chapter 1 focuses on this and conducted a study on 1216 male individuals of different socio-economic status residing at Kolkata, West Bengal. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) was initiated in India in 2006 with a view to creating more wage employment in rural areas thereby ameliorating rural poverty. But after the completion of more than a decade, the effects and roles of the scheme are found to be manifolds. Particularly, if we consider the impact of women. Chapter 2 looks at how the role of women have changed, especially in the family, and how that impacts society. In chapter 3, the authors performed a study to assess age trends in anthropometric measures and nutritional status among adult Mahali females. However, the importance of these markets has largely been ignored by agricultural policymakers and mainstream economists. This pioneering study, covering both the pre- and the post-liberalization periods, and West Bengal's transformation from a seriously deficit to a surplus state, conceives of the post-harvest sector as a system of markets. It shows how, while West Bengal enjoyed the results of a reformed agrarian system, the market system remained unreformed until recently. The book sheds light on the role and importance of distribution and commodity markets in shaping and spreading the benefits of higher productivity across society. An original analysis of the regulation of markets by institutions of collective action and social identity, as well as by the state, the book discusses a regulatory policy that could be adopted by any government, irrespective of its ideology. Barbara Harriss-White's quarter-century of field work in West Bengal has yielded new insights into the political economy, where ethno-cultural networks and informal finance have led to a polarization of agro-commercial power on the one hand, and a proliferation of livelihoods for small traders in the post-harvest market system on the other. This is found to be much higher in certain parts of India, emerging as the single most important avenue for urban females, surpassing males in the service since the 1980s. By applying an imaginative and refreshing mix of disciplinary approaches ranging from economic models of the household, empirical analysis and literary conventions, this book analyses the changing labour economy in post-partition West Bengal. It explains how and why women and girl children have replaced this traditionally male bias in the gender segregated domestic service industry since the late 1940s, and addresses the question of whether this increase in vulnerable individuals working in domestic service, the growth of the urban professional middle class in the post liberalization period, and the increasing incidences of reported abuses of domestics, in urban middleclass homes in the recent years, are related.
