Book West Africa s Women of God

Download or read book West Africa s Women of God written by Robert M. Baum and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Africa's Women of God examines the history of direct revelation from Emitai, the Supreme Being, which has been central to the Diola religion from before European colonization to the present day. Robert M. Baum charts the evolution of this movement from its origins as an exclusively male tradition to one that is largely female. He traces the response of Diola to the distinct challenges presented by conquest, colonial rule, and the post-colonial era. Looking specifically at the work of the most famous Diola woman prophet, Alinesitoué, Baum addresses the history of prophecy in West Africa and its impact on colonialism, the development of local religious traditions, and the role of women in religious communities.

Book Muslims and New Media in West Africa

Download or read book Muslims and New Media in West Africa written by Dorothea E. Schulz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Islam is not new to West Africa, new patterns of domestic economies, the promise of political liberalization, and the proliferation of new media have led to increased scrutiny of Islam in the public sphere. Dorothea E. Schulz shows how new media have created religious communities that are far more publicly engaged than they were in the past. Muslims and New Media in West Africa expands ideas about religious life in West Africa, women's roles in religion, religion and popular culture, the meaning of religious experience in a charged environment, and how those who consume both religion and new media view their public and private selves.

Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, Robert Baum seeks to reconstruct the religious and social history of the Diola communities in southern Senegal during the precolonial era, when the Atlantic slave trade was at its height. He demonstrates how this close involvement with the traders significantly changed Diola religious life.

Book Women in the Church of God in Christ

Download or read book Women in the Church of God in Christ written by Anthea Butler and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Church of God in Christ (COGIC), an African American Pentecostal denomination founded in 1896, has become the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States today. In this first major study of the church, Anthea Butler examines the religious and social lives of the women in the COGIC Women's Department from its founding in 1911 through the mid-1960s. She finds that the sanctification, or spiritual purity, that these women sought earned them social power both in the church and in the black community. Offering rich, lively accounts of the activities of the Women's Department founders and other members, Butler shows that the COGIC women of the early decades were able to challenge gender roles and to transcend the limited responsibilities that otherwise would have been assigned to them both by churchmen and by white-dominated society. The Great Depression, World War II, and the civil rights movement brought increased social and political involvement, and the Women's Department worked to make the "sanctified world" of the church interact with the broader American society. More than just a community of church mothers, says Butler, COGIC women utilized their spiritual authority, power, and agency to further their contestation and negotiation of gender roles in the church and beyond.

Book excerpt: "In most West African countries, queer people live in constant fear, abused by both institutions and society at large that blatantly refuse to acknowledge their right to live and love freely. Women endure particular forms of homophobia that are damaging because of sexism. This book builds awareness about what queer women face in West Africa who are daily persecuted for their sexuality. It also bears witness to their collective pain and celebrates their defiant spirit. This collection of personal stories reveals the experiences of queer West African women from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Benin Republic, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Liberia and Senegal. Wedged Between Man and God brings a refreshing perspective to the nuances of femininity and women's sexuality in Africa. Above all, it calls for equality, confronts the myth that queer women are unfit for economic and political opportunities and demands an egalitarian world."--From back cover.

Book Tongnaab

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean Allman
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2005-11-18
  • ISBN : 0253111838
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book Tongnaab written by Jean Allman and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Africanist historians, traditional religion is simply a starting point for measuring the historic impact of Christianity and Islam. In Tongnaab, Jean Allman and John Parker challenge the distinction between tradition and modernity by tracing the movement and mutation of the powerful Talensi god and ancestor shrine, Tongnaab, from the savanna of northern Ghana through the forests and coastal plains of the south. Using a wide range of written, oral, and iconographic sources, Allman and Parker uncover the historical dynamics of cross-cultural religious belief and practice. They reveal how Tongnaab has been intertwined with many themes and events in West African history -- the slave trade, colonial conquest and rule, capitalist agriculture and mining, labor migration, shifting ethnicities, the production of ethnographic knowledge, and the political projects that brought about the modern nation state. This rich and original book shows that indigenous religion has been at the center of dramatic social and economic changes stretching from the slave trade to the tourist trade.

Book Female Monarchs and Merchant Queens in Africa

Download or read book Female Monarchs and Merchant Queens in Africa written by Nwando Achebe and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unapologetically African-centered monograph that reveals physical and spiritual forms and systems of female power and leadership in African cultures. Nwando Achebe’s unparalleled study documents elite females, female principles, and female spiritual entities across the African continent, from the ancient past to the present. Achebe breaks from Western perspectives, research methods, and their consequently incomplete, skewed accounts, to demonstrate the critical importance of distinctly African source materials and world views to any comprehensible African history. This means accounting for the two realities of African cosmology: the physical world of humans and the invisible realm of spiritual gods and forces. That interconnected universe allows biological men and women to become female-gendered males and male-gendered females. This phenomenon empowers the existence of particular African beings, such as female husbands, male priestesses, female kings, and female pharaohs. Achebe portrays their combined power, influence, and authority in a sweeping, African-centric narrative that leads to an analogous consideration of contemporary African women as heads of state, government officials, religious leaders, and prominent entrepreneurs.

Book West African Literatures

Download or read book West African Literatures written by Stephanie Newell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Studies in Postcolonial Literatures series (general editor: Elleke Boehmer) offers stimulating and accessible introductions to definitive topics and key genres and regions within the rapidly diversifying field of postcolonial literary studies in English. This study of West African literatures interweaves the analysis of fiction, drama, and poetry with an exploration of the broader political, cultural, and intellectual contexts within which West African writers work. Anglophone literatures form the central focus of the book, with comparative comments on vernacular literature, francophone writing and oral literatures, and detailed discussion of selected francophone texts in translation (e.g., Senghor, Tadjo, Beyala, Bâ, Sembene). Movingfrom a discussion of nationalist and anti-colonial writing in the period before independence, towards the more experimental writings of contemporary authors such as Véronique Tadjo (Ivory Coast), Syl Cheney-Coker (Sierra Leone), and Kojo Laing (Ghana), the book constantly relates texts to the social andpolitical history of West Africa. Canonical, internationally well-known writers such as Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka are positioned in relation to the literary cultures and debates which surrounded them when they first produced their seminal texts; the discussions and disagreements which have grown up around their work in subsequent decades are also considered. The work of new and lesser-known writers is also considered, including Niyi Osundare (Nigeria) and Kofi Anyidoho (Ghana). In order toconvey a sense of the rich and complex societies that are clustered beneath the umbrella-term 'postcolonial', emphasis is placed on West Africa's diverse oral and popular cultures, and the ways in which local intellectuals and readers have responded to the most prominent authors through theaesthetic frameworks generated by these forms.

Download or read book A Life of Faith written by Mai C. Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about Faith, a woman who had children when she was young and unmarried. Because of where and when she was born, young unmarried women with children were often ostracized and their chances of achieving a high school education, not to mention, college education were very slim. While a woman in her situation only hope was marrying a man, who would take care of her and her children, she took a different approach. Steadily and with a determined mind, she cultivated her independence, inch by inch towards her passion for learning. She believed a good education would give her the leverage to shield herself from marriage as her only option to living. Against all odds and hardships that she experienced from early teenage years to young adulthood, she ultimately migrated from Liberia to the United States, went to school, and eventually earned advanced degrees. Her education dramatically improved her quality of life and boosted her self-confidence and self-worth. Faith is a model for young single mothers and fathers, who are often overlooked and denigrated by society, simply because they had children out of wedlock. With determination and strong faith in God, while pursuing aims and aspirations, their dreams can also become realities.

Download or read book Enough about Me written by Jen Oshman and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women today feel a constant pressure to improve themselves and just never feel like they're "enough." All too often, they live their daily lives disheartened, disillusioned, and disappointed. That's because joy doesn't come from a new self-improvement strategy; it comes from rooting their identity in who God says they are and what he has done on their behalf. This book calls women to look away from themselves in order to find the abundant life God offers them—contrasting the cultural emphasis on personal improvement and empowerment with what the Scriptures say about a life rooted, built up, and established in the gospel.
