Book Wesley s Forms of Prayer 1733

Download or read book Wesley s Forms of Prayer 1733 written by John Wesley and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1733 publication, John Wesley's first, arose out of his own devotional life. Originally, it was a collection of prayers compiled for his pupils and colleagues at Oxford. The content was drawn from a popular Anglican devotional manual first published twelve years earlier (1721), The True Church of England Man's Companion in the Closet; or, A Complete Manual of Private Devotion. The book, compiled by Nathaniel Spinckes, included prayers for morning and evening every day of the week, beginning with Sunday. Wesley not only revised the prayer which he reprinted from Spinckes, but assigned them to different days and times. He used other sources in addition to Spinckes, and may have added original prayers of his own.The preface is clearly Wesley's own, which he revised after sharing a draft with his father. Wesley also added a list of "particular questions" for self-examination before evening prayer each day and a briefer series of "general questions" for use every morning prefixed to the prayers for Monday. Here Wesley was following a practice of Western spiritual advisers from Robert Nelson and others in the 17th century back to Ignatius of Loyola in the 16th century. When Wesley revised the book for its fifth edition in 1740, he omitted the questions for self-examination and made the volume more suitable for general use by substituting "family" for "college" in several places. The elimination of the questions may have been in response to brother Samuel Wesley's criticism that the emphasis on self-examination was "mystic nonsense." Editions after 1755, including that in Wesley's collected works, restored the questions. Along the way, hymns were also added making later editions a popular book of worship for Methodist families and societies.

Book John Wesley s Doctrine of Justification

Download or read book John Wesley s Doctrine of Justification written by Mark. K. Olson and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2024-01-16 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley’s Doctrine of Justification provides updated scholarship on this pivotal doctrine of Methodism, providing a deeper understanding of a major tenet of the Christian faith. Mark Olson offers a comprehensive treatment of the development and exposition of Wesley’s doctrine of justification and how it changed throughout Wesley’s life, including his early views rooted in Anglican heritage, the significant developments in Wesley’s career, and contributions from notable figures like John Fletcher to his doctrine of general justification. The doctrine of justification was pivotal to John Wesley’s understanding of a person’s relationship with God. In Wesley’s view, it defined one of the two general parts of salvation. It touched every aspect of the spiritual journey from birth (general justification) to conversion (present justification) to final judgment and glory (final justification). To properly understand Wesley’s via salutis and theology, one needs to grasp the particulars of his doctrine of justification. The best way to do this is to tell the story of how he came to understand the doctrine over the course of his life. It is a complex story, with many twists and turns, that deserves to be fully told.

Download or read book George Whitefield written by Geordan Hammond and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Whitefield (1714-70) was one of the best known and most widely travelled evangelical revivalists in the eighteenth century. For a time in the middle decades of the eighteenth century, Whitefield was the most famous person on both sides of the Atlantic. An Anglican clergyman, Whitefield soon transcended his denominational context as his itinerant ministry fuelled a Protestant renewal movement in Britain and the American colonies. He was one of the founders of Methodism, establishing a distinct brand of the movement with a Calvinist orientation, but also the leading itinerant and international preacher of the evangelical movement in its early phase. Called the 'Apostle of the English empire', he preached throughout the whole of the British Isles and criss-crossed the Atlantic seven times, preaching in nearly every town along the eastern seaboard of America. His own fame and popularity were such that he has been dubbed 'Anglo-America's first religious celebrity', and even one of the 'Founding Fathers of the American Revolution'. This collection offers a major reassessment of Whitefield's life, context, and legacy, bringing together a distinguished interdisciplinary team of scholars from both sides of the Atlantic. In chapters that cover historical, theological, and literary themes, many addressed for the first time, the volume suggests that Whitefield was a highly complex figure who has been much misunderstood. Highly malleable, Whitefield's persona was shaped by many audiences during his lifetime and continues to be highly contested.

Book Wesleyan Eucharistic Spirituality

Download or read book Wesleyan Eucharistic Spirituality written by Lorna Lock-Nah Khoo and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central thesis of the book is that there is a distinctive Wesleyan eucharistic spirituality. Looking at Wesleys's eucharistic practices, theology and sources, the writer identifies a spirituality that has a number of key themes. These revolve around the dynamic encounter with a personal Christ, the grace filled life, the therapeutic growth towards holiness and wholenes. They provide a way of looking at life and the formation of characters which may conform to the image of the Christ. While there were several reasons for the decline of Weslyean eucharistic spirituality after the death of the Wesleys, the writer maintains that this spirituality can be rediscovered, revived and communicated in new forms so as to impact Methodists around the world who are facing the challenges of the 21st century. The author is a pastor in a Methodist Church in Singapore.

Book John Wesley s Tracts on Prayer

Download or read book John Wesley s Tracts on Prayer written by John Wesley and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 2nd Edition of John Wesley's Tracts on Prayer published by furocious studios (revised Aug 2017). The contents of this book are similar to those found in The Works of the Rev John Wesley - Volume Xi used for the first edition. Used in this edition are the original booklets with substantive capitalization found in early 18th Century. The main difference in this book from the original booklets is the modern text-type rather than Caslon. Other than that this book keeps the original style especially the European English spellings. These editions are preserved here in flavour with John Wesley's Prayer Collection. They have nice little surprises like Wesley's Preface. Little touches like that keep this book from being redundant with other collections of Wesley's work. There are also Hymns added to the collection of Prayers for Children and a tiny delightful booklet called GRACES perfect to make this book complete.
