Jahrhundert wachsenden und überraschend starken Präsenz von Medien auf dem Land nachgegangen und gezeigt, dass ländliche Kommunikationsweisen stark medialisiert waren, sich indes wichtige Charakteristika ländlicher Soziabilität behaupteten. In hohem Maße wurden und werden Bilder von Ländlichkeit durch öffentliche und private Medien erstellt und weiterverbreitet, auch in die ländlichen Gesellschaften hinein. Romantisierend-idealisierende Aspekte, Nostalgie, Idylle, Utopie und immer noch dichotomisch angelegte Vorstellungen von Stadt und Land kennzeichnen eine solche medial hergestellte Ruralität. Medialität und Ruralität, so die Gesamtthese dieses Bandes, erweisen sich als zentrale Kategorien ländlicher Gesellschaftsanalyse. Dabei wird deutlich, dass sich im Zusammenhang ländlicher Gesellschaften und Publika aktive Aneignungsprozesse vollzogen und vollziehen. Die Kommunikations- und Medienanalyse sollte folglich, wie das hier geschieht, nicht allein von den jeweiligen Produkten ausgehen, sondern soziale Praktiken einbeziehen.

In tandem with the lived reality of this maritime space, a parallel experience of the sea emerged in narrative representations from ancient Greece and Rome, of the sea as a cultural imaginary. This imaginary seems often to oscillate between two extremes: the utopian and the catastrophic; such representations can be found in narratives from ancient history, philosophy, society, and literature, as well as in their post-classical receptions. Utopia can be found in some imaginary island paradise far away and across the distant sea; the sea can hold an unknown, mysterious, divine wealth below its surface; and the sea itself as a powerful watery body can hold a liberating potential. The utopian quality of the sea and seafaring can become a powerful metaphor for articulating political notions of the ideal state or for expressing an individual’s sense of hope and subjectivity. Yet the catastrophic sea balances any perfective imaginings: the sea threatens coastal inhabitants with floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes and sailors with storms and the accompanying monsters. From symbolic perspectives, the catastrophic sea represents violence, instability, the savage, and even cosmological chaos. The twelve papers in this volume explore the themes of utopia and catastrophe in the liminal environment of the sea, through the lens of history, philosophy, literature and classical reception. Finally it was only maintained in several peripheral and isolated sites, such as in the Palmyra desert and in Cyprus. Maciej M. Munnich presents the written sources which mentioned Resheph and analyzes the features of Resheph's cult. He emphasizes that there is no confirmation for the theory that Resheph was a lord of the netherworld. Resheph was a belligerent, aggressive god who used diseases to attack people, but who could also heal. Because of the long period of the cult and the geographical range, one can notice some local features: In Egypt, for instance, Resheph originally was venerated as the deity supporting the Pharaoh in battles, but then he was summoned mainly because of illness and everyday needs.

Entgegen dem allenthalben pauschal erklärten `Abschied vom Subjekt' spricht aber vieles dafür, dass es in der gegenwärtigen Sozialtheorie eher um eine Reformulierung transzendentaler Subjektivität geht. Diese Interpretationsthese wirft ein neues Licht auf den sozialtheoretischen Diskurs, der im deutschen Sprachraum in den vergangenen dreissig Jahren vom Gegensatz von Jürgen Habermas' und Niklas Luhmanns Theorien bestimmt war: `Diskurs' und `System' erscheinen als gegensätzliche Versuche, `Subjektivität' und `Interität' in ein theoretisch befriedigendes Verhältnis zu setzen. Wenn aber - so die kritische These dieses Buches - weder die Reformulierung von Subjektivität als `Interität' noch die Reformulierung von Subjektivität ohne `Interität' das Problem der Intersubjektivität überzeugend löst, ist dies ein Grund, neuerlich in eine direkte Auseinandersetzung mit Husserls Theorie transzendentaler Subjektivität einzutreten. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass Husserls vielkritisierter und -skandalisierter Versuch, den Sinn `Anderer' im `Eigenen' zu fundieren, in der transzendentalphänomenologischen Subjekttheorie durch ein umgekehrtes Begründungsverhältnis konterkariert wird. Bei aller Problematik dieser Theorieanlage - welche nur in Gegenwendung zu den Gewohnheiten der Husserl-Interpretation, vor allem aber auch zu Husserls Selbstinterpretation in den Blick kommt - zeigt sich, dass der phänomenologische Begriff des transzendentalen Subjekts seinen Reformulierungen als Diskurs und als System in mancher Hinsicht überlegen ist.

Most traditional studies approach the classical afterlife from the point of view of its "evolution" towards the Christian afterlife. This book tries to do something different: to explore afterlife narratives in spatial terms and to situate this tradition within the ambit of a fundamental need in human psychology for the synthesis of soul (or "self") and universe. Drawing on the works of Homer, Plato, Cicero, Virgil, and Dante, among others, as well as on modern works on psychology, cartography, and music theory, Mapping the Afterlife argues that the topography of the afterlife in the Greek and Roman tradition, and in Dante, reflects the state of "scientific" knowledge at the time of the various contexts in which we find it. The book posits that there is a dominant spatial idiom in afterlife landscapes, a "journey-vision paradigm"--the horizontal journey of the soul across the afterlife landscape, and a synoptic vision of the universe. Many scholars have argued that the vision of the universe is out of place in the underworld landscape. However, looking across the entire tradition, we find that afterlife landscapes, almost without exception, contain these two kinds of space in one form or another. This double vision of space brings the underworld, as the landscape of the soul, into contact with the "scientific" universe; and brings humanity into line with the cosmos.

Was wird perzipiert, was bleibt außen vor, was geht unter in der Flut an Informationen? Nachrichten über Kriege sind immer ungleich auf Interessenlagen bezogen. In den Blick gerät, was Medien verbreiten. Andere Kriege existieren in der Realität, aber nicht im Bewusstsein von Zeitgenossen weltweit. Fiktionale Verarbeitungen von Kriegen können, anders und intensiver als die Nachricht, die Gewalt reflektieren, sie einordnen, ihr Sinn geben oder sie verwerfen. Sie sind Mittel oder Teil der kriegerischen Strategie und der Propaganda, können aber ebenso gut Gegenentwürfe anbieten zu den Gräueltaten, die sie repräsentieren. Weder Fiktionalität oder Information, noch die Art der medialen Umsetzung stellen, an sich betrachtet, eine Vorentscheidung dar, wie kritisch oder wie affirmativ Kriegshandlungen geschildert oder gedeutet werden. Der vorliegende Band zeigt diese grundsätzliche Ambivalenz in den großen, epochalen Umbrüchen der Mediendispositive und den inter- und transmedialen Wandlungen insgesamt. Er reflektiert sie anhand der Geschichte der Einzelmedien wie Fotografie und Malerei, Hörspiel, Tageszeitung, Essay, Internetforum oder Fernsehnachricht, an der Arbeit von PR-Agenturen oder in der fiktionalen Verarbeitung etwa im Comic. Krieg in den Medien bringt zudem Einzelanalysen und Autorenporträts in den Gattungen Roman, Poetikvorlesung, Spielfilm, Drama oder politisch-philosophische Theorie.
