Book The Elements of Welsh Grammar

Download or read book The Elements of Welsh Grammar written by Samuel James Evans and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this little book I have tried to give prominence, by rule and example, to the first elements of Welsh Grammar. All details have been carefully excluded, except where they were thought to illustrate some important point in the language. I hope the book will be of service to three classes of students: (1) Those boys and girls of our County Schools who are taking up Welsh for the Junior Certificate of the Central Welsh Board; (2) Welsh-speaking Queen's Scholarship Candidates, of whom it is to be hoped an ever-increasing number will take up Welsh as their optional language; and (3) Englishmen who desire to acquire some knowledge of Welsh without having to master at the very threshold a mass of detail, which is more confusing than helpful, and which only serves to discourage those who might otherwise soon master the language. I have sought to illustrate all rules by means of suitable examples drawn from the classics of Welsh literature. - Preface to first edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Welsh Reader and Writer: Being Exercises in Welsh, Based on Anwyl's Welsh Grammar At the request of the Publishers of my Welsh Grammar I have now much pleasure, through the collaboration of my friend and former pupil, the Rev. M.H. Jones, B.A., in publishing a companion volume of Welsh Exercises. The great aim of my Welsh Grammar was the presentation of the distinctive features of the Welsh language, interpreted in the light of its historical development, whereas in earlier text-books Modem Welsh had been largely interpreted through the categories of English and other grammars. It is pleasing to note that the older unscientific methods of regarding the language are now gradually vanishing, and it is to be hoped that the present volume of exercises will not only be useful from a practical point of view, but that it will also serve to make clearer still the distinctive structure of the Welsh tongue. In bringing out this volume of exercises, which is the joint work of the Rev. M.H. Jones and myself, I desire to acknowledge in the most cordial terms the admirable help which his co-operation has given me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Welsh Grammar Preface to the Fifth Edition The text has been thoroughly revised throughout; besides a large number of additions in detail, the chapter on initial mutations has been re-written and made much fuller. The chapter on derivatives and compounds has been much enlarged: Welsh, unlike English, still retains to a remarkable degree the practice of word-building, and there is no department of Welsh Grammar more worthy of serious study; it enlarges the student's vocabulary, and gives him greater precision in the use of words. It is expected that, thus enlarged, the Grammar will adequately meet the needs of candidates for C.W.B. certificates of all grades. Those reading for the Junior may safely omit the matter in small print. Preface to the Sixth Edition The alterations in this edition are all of minor importance. The wording of a few paragraphs has been changed with a view to greater clearness, and a short sentence has been added to the Chapter on Parsing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTORY: THESE Introductory Notes and Exercises are mainly intended for students who have no speaking knowledge of Welsh. The student should first of all read the paragraphs referred to in the Grammar, and then read aloud or write the exercises. Only the most easy and essential sections of the Grammar are dealt with at first, and these will be graded in the order of their difficulty, so that the student will be able to read with proper articulation and accent any passage of ordinary Welsh prose, before he begins the exercises on the different Parts of Speech. In the Vocabularies only the most frequently used words are selected and their meanings are inserted in brackets after them. I. The Welsh Alphabet. Its Symbols and Sounds. The pronunciation of the Welsh vowels, consonants and diphthongs is taught by means of English equivalents. Read and learn §§ 4, 5 and 7 of the Grammar, then try the following Exercises: Note 1. That every sound-symbol in every Welsh word must be sounded. Note 2. That every sound-symbol in Welsh (except Y, see § 8 Gram.) has always the same sound. Note 3. That B, D, H (always aspirated), L, M, N, (long o or short o), P, R (clearly trilled), S always the sharp sibilant), and T have the same sound in Welsh as in English….

Book Language Between Description and Prescription

Download or read book Language Between Description and Prescription written by Lieselotte Anderwald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language Between Description and Prescription is an empirical, quantitative and qualitative study of nineteenth-century English grammar writing, and of nineteenth-century language change. Based on 258 grammar books from Britain and North America, the book investigates whether grammar writers of the time noticed the language changing around them, and how they reacted. In particular, Lieselotte Anderwald demonstrates that not all features undergoing change were noticed in the first place, those that were noticed were not necessarily criticized, and some recessive features were not upheld as correct. The features investigated come from the verb phrase and include in particular variable past tense forms, which -although noticed-often went uncommented, and where variation was acknowledged; the decline of the be-perfect, where the older form (the be-perfect) was criticized emphatically, and corrected; the rise of the progressive, which was embraced enthusiastically, and which was even upheld as a symbol of national superiority, at least in Britain; the rise of the progressive passive, which was one of the most violently hated constructions of the time, and the rise of the get-passive, which was only rarely commented on, and even more rarely in negative terms. Throughout the book, nineteenth-century grammarians are given a voice, and the discussions in grammar books of the time are portrayed. The book's quantitative approach makes it possible to examine majority and minority positions in the discourse community of nineteenth-century grammar writers, and the changes in accepted opinion over time. The terms of the debate are also investigated, and linked to the wider cultural climate of the time. Although grammar writing in the nineteenth century was very openly prescriptivist, the studies in this book show that many prescriptive dicta contained interesting grains of descriptive detail, and that eventually prescriptivism had only a small-scale, short-term effect on the actual language used.
