Book A Black American Missionary in Canada

Download or read book A Black American Missionary in Canada written by Hilary Bates Neary and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis Champion Chambers is one of the forgotten figures of Canadian Black history and the history of religion in Canada. Born enslaved in Maryland, Chambers purchased his freedom as a young man before moving to Canada West in 1854; there he farmed and in time served as a pastor and missionary until 1868. Between 1858 and 1867 he wrote nearly one hundred letters to the secretary of the American Missionary Association in New York, describing the progress of his work and the challenges faced by his community. Now preserved in the collections of the Amistad Research Center at Tulane University, Chambers’s letters provide a rare perspective on the everyday lives of Black settlers during a formative period in Canadian history. Hilary Neary presents Chambers’s letters, weaving into a compelling narrative his vivid accounts of ministering in forest camps and small urban churches, establishing Sabbath schools and temperance societies, combating prejudice, and offering spiritual encouragement. Chambers’s life as an American in Canada intersected with significant events in nineteenth-century Black history: manumission, the Fugitive Slave Act, the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, Emancipation, and Reconstruction. Throughout, Chambers’s fervent Christian faith highlights and reflects the pivotal role of the Black church – African Methodist Episcopal (United States) and British Methodist Episcopal (Canada) – in the lives of the once enslaved. As North Americans explore afresh their history of race and racism, A Black American Missionary in Canada elevates an important voice from the nineteenth-century Black community to deepen knowledge of Canadian history.

Book For the Least of My Brethren

Download or read book For the Least of My Brethren written by Irene McDonald and published by Dundurn Group (CA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For the Least of My Brethren" is the story of St. Michael's Hospital, founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1892 to meet the needs of Toronto's sick poor. Sustained by the Gospel's assurance "What you have done for the least of My Brethren you have done for Me," a plucky little group of fewer than twenty people -- sisters, doctors, and nurses -- located in an old Baptist church, laid the foundations for what would grow into a major urban university teaching hospital The book traces the development to 1992 of the first hospital in Toronto under Roman Catholic auspices, and the first Catholic school of nursing in Canada. Within the context of a not-always-friendly political, social, economic, and religious culture, the author has identified the forces -- the people, events, struggles, triumphs, and failures -- that have shaped St. Michael's into what it is today.

Book The American State Normal School

Download or read book The American State Normal School written by C. Ogren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.
