Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Service Areas' of the Cult Centre comprise a number of rooms, open spaces and passages adjacent to the buildings which form the Temple Complex (WBM 10) and the Room with the Fresco Complex (WBM 11, forthcoming). Excavation of these areas has helped to determine their history and the changes that took place in their orientation and in access to them during the 13th C BC. The finds made are of considerable interest, individually and as groups, and contribute to our understanding of the activities which took place in the areas around the principal Cult Centre buildings. The importance of Area 36, in particular, was apparent during excavation: among the finds, apart from extraordinary quantities of once whole pottery vessels, was a steatite block carved as a jewellery mould, a number of glass beads and bronze tools as well as mortars and other objects of stone. The stratigraphic position of this material confirmed that it was deposited at the same time as the ivories and other objects in the Room with the Fresco. The printed text of c 50 pages provides an illustrated account of the excavation, the structures and the principal finds together with discussions of the significance of each. The accompanying CDs contain over 375 pages of data including Room and Materials analyses similar to those presented in Fascicule 10. The full catalogues of nearly 300 intact or restorable pottery vessels of a wide variety of shapes and uses are accompanied by photographs and line drawings of each item. These are a remarkable addition to our knowledge of Mycenaean pottery, whether for comparative studies of style and decoration or for questions of function.

Book Ritual and Archaic States

Download or read book Ritual and Archaic States written by Murphy, Joanne M and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While ritual and archaic states have both been prominent topics in recent archaeological studies, this is the first volume to combine both subjects by exploring the varying nature, expression, and significance of ritual in archaic states. It compares archaic rituals across many different cultures--Vijayanagara, Swahili Lamu, Venice, Asante, Aztec, Ming China, Oaxaca, Greece, Inca, Wari, and Chaco. The contributors posit that the nature of rituals, the level of investment in rituals, and their sociopolitical significance can vary greatly from state to state, even among societies with similar levels of social complexity, population, and spatial distribution. Highlighting the importance of ritual as an inherent part of a cultural narrative, and demonstrating how the study of ritual enables a better understanding of diverse social groups, this volume shows how the location, frequency, and role of ritual differed significantly across archaic states.

Book Knossos Mycenae Troy

Download or read book Knossos Mycenae Troy written by Natale Barca and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work puts a particular emphasis on the mixing and osmosis of the first Mediterranean civilizations, with particular reference to the Minoan, Cycladic, Mycenaean, and Trojan, and on the causes of their decline, which are to be identified in a jumble of natural and human causes, and in a long-lasting, slow, but irreversible crisis. It takes into account that the Mediterranean Dimension of the Bronze Age is a garden in which many legends flourished, clearly distinguishing between myth and history, and always bearing in mind that legends are not to be taken literally (nonetheless, they often have a grain of truth). It does not aim to provide an exhaustive report but to compose a broad and evolutionary picture, in which the facts and their connections, which are deducible from archaeological evidence or from the accounts of ancient historians, find their place, in their consequentiality. Its originality lies not in the choice of the subject, but in the way of treating it. The author introduces and explains, in order to be read, and perhaps to get excited. Another characterizing element of Knossos, Mycenae, Troy is the wide use of the ‘historical present’ that is made there to represent events and construct the text, to reduce the reader’s distance from the narrated events, and facilitates their approach to them. This book aims to provide the reader with an overall picture of the cultures that laid the foundations of Western civilization, which is not generic, but rather detailed and updated, and which has scientific solidity.

  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2004-03-16
  • ISBN : 078641748X
  • Pages : 389 pages

Download or read book Mycenaean Civilization written by Bryan Feuer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-03-16 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Greeks considered the Mycenaean civilization to be the basis of their glorious and heroic heritage, but its material existence was not confirmed until the excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in the late nineteenth century. In the ensuing years, as with the field of archaeology in general, emphasis has shifted from revealing monuments and finding treasure to dealing with less glamorous, more scientifically-oriented investigations concerning aspects such as social and political organization, economic functions and settlement patterns. With its more than 2000 entries, this reference work serves as both an introduction to and a summary of the study of ancient Mycenaean civilization. Considerably expanded from the first edition, there are 500 new entries representing materials published since 1991. The largest part of the book is made up of annotated bibliography entries arranged topically with introductory material for each section. The book also includes a general introduction to Mycenaean civilization, a glossary, and author, place and subject indexes.
