Book excerpt: Excerpt from Corporations and Public Welfare: Addresses at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, Philadelphia, April Nineteenth and Twentieth, MDCCCC The moment the interest of the consumer rather than that of the public treasury enters as the guiding principle in the control of the public-service corporations, it becomes necessary to examine each service with reference to the social and economic welfare of the community in order to determine where the emphasis of control is to be laid. In the gas service, for instance, the public is primarily inter ested in a low cost of service in order to utilize, to the fullest extent, the varied possibilities of gas as an illuminant, motor power and for purposes of heating and cooking. With the recent improvements in the mechanism of illumination we are rapidly approaching a point at which the candle power of the gas will be of secondary importance. In the street railway service, on the other hand, rapidity of transportation, combined with comfort and convenience, are the primary requisites. With the higher rate of wages pre vailing in American cities low fares must be placed second to the above requirements, and last of all comes the money payment to the City treasury for the privileges granted to the corporations performing the service. In other words, given the conditions of life in American communities, the emphasis must be laid on rapidity and comfort of service. Book A Dividend to Labor

Download or read book A Dividend to Labor written by Nicholas Paine Gilman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dividend to Labor: A Study of Employers Welfare Institutions In Part III under the heading A Direct Divi dend to Labor, I have supplemented my treatise on profit sharing (which it has not seemed feasible to revise) with such later information as the lapse of ten years renders desirable. With the appendixes Nos. II. And III., this part may serve to set forth the later history of the system. To the many business firms and corporations at home and abroad with whom I have corresponded, or whose establishments I have visited, while preparing this work, my sincere and hearty thanks are due for their unwearied courtesy. As I write these closing lines, I am also mindful of two great publicists, too soon departed, to whom I owe much of light and leading, and whose labors in the cause of industrial peace this volume would fain help to continue in some degree - Francis A. Walker of Boston, and Charles Robert of Paris. Whether the dividend to labor which the economist approves and the employer establishes be direct or indirect, I trust that this book may serve to increase that deeper consciousness of kind, that more truly human sympathy between employers and employed. Book Industry and Human Welfare Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industry and Human Welfare Classic Reprint written by William L. Chenery and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industry and Human Welfare The Social Welfare Library is notably enriched by the present volume on Industry and Human Welfare. Its author is a specialist, but he has not written for specialists. He is a journalist, but this is not, strictly speaking, an attempt to "popularize" a technical subject. It is intended for that already large and increasing number of citizens who are concerned that industry shall be productive and not destructive; that it shall promote the general welfare, without injury to workers; that the work of the nation shall be done by the natural and legitimate workers, not by children or invalids, and each part of it by those physically and mentally qualified for it. This Library is designed for those who are interested in promoting the conditions which favor a happy and useful life for all people. Among the most important additions are those which affect income. Knowledge of the effect of industry itself on the worker and his family, his wages, his hours of labor, the regularity of employment and the hazards of industry, is therefore fundamental. The public official, the church visitor, the private citizen interested in family welfare or in child welfare, has to understand what has happened as a result of the industrial changes of the past century if he is to get the elementary satisfaction to which he is entitled from his efforts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Lael Brainard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Simple Theory of Multinational Corporations and Trade With a Trade-Off Between Proximity and Concentration The presence of multinationals has an ambiguous effect on consumer welfare; consumers benefit from a reduction in transport costs, but there is a concomitant reduction in the number of varieties, all else equal. In the absence of multinationals, they consume a larger quantity of differentiated goods produced locally than of imports, so that there is a home-market bias, whereas with two-way multinational production, they consume equal quantities of home and foreign varieties. Book The Adult Learner

Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Corporations and American Democracy

Download or read book Corporations and American Democracy written by Naomi R. Lamoreaux and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Citizens United and other high-profile cases have sparked passionate disagreement about the proper role of corporations in American democracy. Partisans on both sides have made bold claims, often with little basis in historical facts. Bringing together leading scholars of history, law, and political science, Corporations and American Democracy provides the historical and intellectual grounding necessary to put today’s corporate policy debates in proper context. From the nation’s founding to the present, Americans have regarded corporations with ambivalence—embracing their potential to revolutionize economic life and yet remaining wary of their capacity to undermine democratic institutions. Although corporations were originally created to give businesses and other associations special legal rights and privileges, historically they were denied many of the constitutional protections afforded flesh-and-blood citizens. This comprehensive volume covers a range of topics, including the origins of corporations in English and American law, the historical shift from special charters to general incorporation, the increased variety of corporations that this shift made possible, and the roots of modern corporate regulation in the Progressive Era and New Deal. It also covers the evolution of judicial views of corporate rights, particularly since corporations have become the form of choice for an increasing variety of nonbusiness organizations, including political advocacy groups. Ironically, in today’s global economy the decline of large, vertically integrated corporations—the type of corporation that past reform movements fought so hard to regulate—poses some of the newest challenges to effective government oversight of the economy.

Book Why We Love Dogs Eat Pigs and Wear Cows

Download or read book Why We Love Dogs Eat Pigs and Wear Cows written by Melanie Joy and published by Red Wheel. This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An important and groundbreaking contribution to the struggle for the welfare of animals." -- Yuval Harari, New York Times best-selling author of Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind The book offers an absorbing look at why and how humans can so wholeheartedly devote ourselves to certain animals and then allow others to suffer needlessly, especially those slaughtered for our consumption. Social psychologist Melanie Joy explores the many ways we numb ourselves and disconnect from our natural empathy for farmed animals. She coins the term "carnism" to describe the belief system that has conditioned us to eat certain animals and not others. In Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows, Joy investigates factory farming, exposing how cruelly the animals are treated, the hazards that meatpacking workers face, and the environmental impact of raising 10 billion animals for food each year. Controversial and challenging, this book will change the way you think about food forever. "An absorbing examination of why humans feel affection and compassion for certain animals but are callous to the suffering of others." - Publishers Weekly "I think Gandhi would have loved Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows,. For this is a book that can change the way you think and change the way you live. It will lead you from denial to awareness, from passivity to action, and from resignation to hope." - John Robbins, author of Diet for a New America and The Food Revolution
