Book Welding Test 206 Physical Characteristics of Welded Longitudinal Seams Preliminary Investigation

Download or read book Welding Test 206 Physical Characteristics of Welded Longitudinal Seams Preliminary Investigation written by J. W. Day and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago, a series of tensile tests on medium steel plates with a longitudinal weld in the direction of loading was conducted by the Bureau of Construction and Repair at the Bureau of Standards. These tests showed that the presence of the longitudinal weld decreased the ultimate strength of the plates. The effect was attributed to the low ductility of the weld as compared to the high ductility of the plate. Since those tests were conducted the quality o the electrodes used in welding medium steel has been greatly improved. The minimum specifications for Grade EA electrodes call for a yield strength of 50,000 pounds per square inch, an ultimate tensile strength of 65,000 pounds per square inch, and an elongation of 22 per cent in 2 inches. Welding Test 206 was designed to show the effect of longitudinal seams welded with Grade EA electrodes on medium and high tensile steel plating. Preliminary to this test, five specimens were designed by the Bureau of Ships to determine whether it would be necessary to include welds of both single-vee and double-vee type. These specimens were fabricated at the Norfolk Navy Yard and shipped to the Experimental Model Basin for test.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of longitudinally welded seams and webs on large steel tensile specimens were investigated. Some interesting data were obtained on the nature and mode of propagation of rupture in the specimens. These data were secured by means of a motion picture camera. The value of energy absorbed was computed for each specimen. Longitudinal weld and web metal had little effect on the strength of medium steel, but a moderate reduction in ductility resulted. The strength of high tensile and of special treatment steel was reduced slightly by the presence of longitudinal weld and web metal, but there were erratic variations in the ductility of these steels. The medium steel specimens absorbed more energy than did the high tensile and special treatment steel specimens. However, this difference was less pronounced where the high tensile steel and special treatment steel specimens had medium steel welded webs.

Book Welding Deformation and Residual Stress Prevention

Download or read book Welding Deformation and Residual Stress Prevention written by Ninshu Ma and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally, welding produces welding deformation and residual stress in the products, which influences the quality and performance of the products. Although many engineers and researchers have made great effort how to control these incidents, they have still remained unresolved. Welding Deformation and Residual Stress Prevention provides a unique computational approach to the prediction of the effects of deformation and residual stress on materials. The goal is to provide engineers and designers with the ability to create their own computational system for predicting and possibly avoiding the problem altogether. - The basic theories including "theory of elastic-plastic analysis" and "inherent strain theory" , and analysis procedures are described using a simple three-bar model - Online simulation software to perform basic analysis on welding mechanics - Examples of strategic methods and procedures are illustrated to have solved various welding-related problems encountered in the process of construction - Appendices present data bases for welding residual stresses, temperature dependent material properties, etc.

Download or read book Residual Stresses 2016 written by Thomas M. Holden and published by Materials Research Forum LLC. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the International Conference on Residual Stresses 10 and is devoted to the prediction/modelling, evaluation, control, and application of residual stresses in engineering materials. New developments, on stress-measurement techniques, on modelling and prediction of residual stresses and on progress made in the fundamental understanding of the relation between the state of residual stress and the material properties, are highlighted. The proceedings offer an overview of the current understanding of the role of residual stresses in materials used in wide ranging application areas.
