Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I want to love my neighbor, but I don't know how." Most of us feel guilty about Christ's command to love our neighbor, but let's be honest--we don't even know most of the people living around us. How can we love people we don't even know? Besides, doesn't it count as "loving our neighbor" when we send money to missionaries and put out yard signs for our church? Are we supposed to just knock on our neighbors' doors and tell them about Jesus? "They'll think I'm weird." How to Love Your Neighbor Without Being Weird helps you overcome fears about getting to know your neighbors and sharing your faith. You'll learn simple, practical ways to get to know your neighbors, using your God-given personality. As you venture out of the comfort of your living room and into the lives of your neighbors, you'll form authentic friendships, create a safer community, and find fulfillment in obeying Christ's #2 command. Loving your neighbor isn't a random command; it's God's perfect plan. "A very timely book for a very isolated culture. Amy Lively offers practical help and guidance in the neglected practice of hospitality."--Dr. Dennis Rainey, president, FamilyLife "This ministry is changing lives. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to live with difference—not necessarily in peace, but with resilience, engagement, and a lack of vitriol—is a defining worry in America at this moment. The poets, fiction writers, and essayists (plus one graphic novelist) who contributed to Welcome to the Neighborhood don’t necessarily offer roadmaps to harmonious neighboring. Some of their narrators don’t even want to be neighbors. Maybe they grieve, or rage. Maybe they briefly find resolution or community. But they do approach the question of what it means to be neighbors, and how we should do it, with open minds and nuance. The many diverse contributors give this collection a depth beyond easy answers. Their attentions to the theme of neighborliness as an ongoing evolution offer hope to readers: possible pathways for rediscovering community, even just by way of a shared wish for it. The result is an enormously rich resource for the classroom and for anyone interested in reflecting on what it means to be American today, and how place and community play a part. Contributors include Leila Chatti, Rita Dove, Jonathan Escoffery, Rebecca Morgan Frank, Amina Gautier, Ross Gay, Mark Halliday, Joy Harjo, Edward Hirsch, Marie Howe, Sonya Larson, Dinty W. Moore, Robert Pinsky, Christine Schutt, and many more.

Download or read book Loving God and Neighbor written by George Van Pelt Campbell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-24 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament book of Deuteronomy is the Bible’s most elaborate explanation of what it means to love God and love neighbor. In fact, the book contains the Bible’s first explicit command to love God in Deut 6:4–5, often referred to as the Shema. Jesus quoted heavily from Deuteronomy during his ministry, and this book still contains many practical teachings for his followers today. Drawing from recent understanding of the book’s previously perplexing structure, we find that while the Ten Commandments are famously framed mostly as brief negatives such as “do not murder,” they were written to teach an open-ended array of positive ways to demonstrate love for God and neighbor. This book offers a positive restatement of each commandment to establish how Deuteronomy presents each commandment’s full meaning. This book will help readers discover the riches of the book of Deuteronomy by reading it with understanding. It will also offer the resources needed to lead a Bible study on or preach through Deuteronomy so that Christians are better prepared to love God and neighbor.
