Download or read book Trafficking and Extortion of Burmese Migrants in Malaysia and Southern Thailand written by Richard G. Lugar and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1995, approx. 40,000 Burmese refugees have resettled in the U.S., fleeing the repressive military junta in Burma. The majority of refugee arrivals come via Bangkok, Thailand or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2008 there was a review of allegations about mistreatment of Burmese refugees enroute to the U.S. -- specifically, that they were victims of extortion and human trafficking in Malaysia and Thailand. These findings are from research in Malaysia, Thailand and the U.S., as well as info. obtained from other countries. The report examines a specific and narrow component of a broader regional issue, namely, the ongoing migrant and refugee crisis throughout ASEAN which calls for the establishment of a comprehensive regional policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this analysis of media law in Malaysia surveys the massively altered and enlarged legal landscape traditionally encompassed in laws pertaining to freedom of expression and regulation of communications. Everywhere, a shift from mass media to mass self-communication has put enormous pressure on traditional law models. An introduction describing the main actors and salient aspects of media markets is followed by in-depth analyses of print media, radio and television broadcasting, the Internet, commercial communications, political advertising, concentration in media markets, and media regulation. Among the topics that arise for discussion are privacy, cultural policy, protection of minors, competition policy, access to digital gateways, protection of journalists’ sources, standardization and interoperability, and liability of intermediaries. Relevant case law is considered throughout, as are various ethical codes. A clear, comprehensive overview of media legislation, case law, and doctrine, presented from the practitioner’s point of view, this book is a valuable time-saving resource for all concerned with media and communication freedom. Lawyers representing parties with interests in Malaysia will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative media law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alexandra Wong left her corporate job to pursue her dream of being a writer, she didn't expect to open a treasure chest of experiences. Culture shock and curtains of mosquitoes give way to familial warmth at an Iban longhouse. A French former nuclear scientist who embraced Malaysia as his second home makes a weekend in Gua Musang even more memorable. Pointers on how to be a serious and caring teacher emerge from one of her school's naughtiest girls. And stirring displays of chivalry help Alexandra see titled and supposedly aloof public figures in a different light. From the generosity of food vendors and selflessness of bus and taxi drivers to innumerable life lessons learnt from friends both old and new, she knew from the very start she was chasing something far more precious than her dream. A compilation of her popular Navel Gazer columns in The Star and other stories, Made in Malaysia is about one woman's journey of discovery across a historically and culturally rich and diverse land.

Book Treatment of Foreign Law in Asia

Download or read book Treatment of Foreign Law in Asia written by Kazuaki Nishioka and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do Asian courts ascertain, interpret, and apply a foreign law as the law governing the merits of the case? What should judges do if parties do not raise or disagree on the content of foreign law? This thematic volume in the Studies in Private International Law – Asia series analyses the treatment of foreign law before judicial authorities, that is, how the courts of Asian states deal with the proof of foreign law in court litigation involving cross-border elements. The individual chapters cover 15 Asian jurisdictions: Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and India. The Introduction and Conclusion examine similarities and differences in the approaches taken by the 15 Asian states with a view to assessing the extent to which those approaches are consistent or different from each other. The book also puts forward suggestions for harmonising differing approaches, especially between Asian common law and civil law states. The book is a one-stop reference guide on the treatment of foreign law in Asia and will be indispensable to judges, practitioners, and scholars not just in Asia, but worldwide.
