Book Durban s Climate Gamble

Download or read book Durban s Climate Gamble written by Patrick Bond and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Durban, South Africa is a city of immense beauty. It is also a city with deep environmental scars caused by industrial giants and an insensitive government. As the host city for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change conference - COP 17 - Durban will be at the center of the world's climate negotiations. This book takes the reader on a journey from Durban's apartheid roots to its somewhat jaded present, passing cultural icons and political battles while narrating socio-economic and environmental conflict and the reinvention of the city's tradition of social protest. All this creates a context from which the reader can interpret the city's hosting of the COP 17. The book includes the reflections of critical political ecologists, socialists, political economists, geographers, and environmental activists on Durban's political ecology, global climate policy, and COP politics. In this context, it can be understood why the COP 17 represents a vast climate gamble. Will carbon trading solve the Earth's climate crisis? The book looks at the environmental injustices the Earth will have to endure in the face of the demise of the Kyoto protocol, and it critically examines COP 17's faith in finding market solutions for market problems while gambling with the Earth's future.

Book African Intimacies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Neville Wallace Hoad
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 1452909172
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book African Intimacies written by Neville Wallace Hoad and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been few book-length engagements with the question of sexuality in Africa, let alone African homosexuality. African Intimacies simultaneously responds to the public debate on the “Africanness” of homosexuality and interrogates the meaningfulness of the terms “sexuality” and “homosexuality” outside Euro-American discourse. Speculating on cultural practices interpreted by missionaries as sodomy and resistance to colonialism, Neville Hoad begins by analyzing the 1886 Bugandan martyrs incident—the execution of thirty men in the royal court. Then, in a series of close readings, he addresses questions of race, sex, and globalization in the 1965 Wole Soyinka novel The Interpreters, examines the emblematic 1998 Lambeth conference of Anglican bishops, considers the imperial legacy in depictions of the HIV/AIDS crisis, and reveals how South African writer Phaswane Mpe’s contemporary novel Welcome to Our Hillbrow problematizes notions of African identity and cosmopolitanism. Hoad’s assessment of the historical valence of homosexuality in Africa shows how the category has served a key role in a larger story, one in which sexuality has been made in line with a vision of white Western truth, limiting an understanding of intimacy that could imagine an African universalism. Neville Hoad is assistant professor of English at the University of Texas, Austin.

Book excerpt: This book is a story. It's a story about ordinary people in very different parts of the world dealing with rapid change in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It's about times of turbulent and violent social upheaval and rupture with the past. It's about modern times. It's also about being human; what it is to be human in a modernising and globalising world; how, in responding to the circumstances of their times, different groups define, redefine, and attempt to put into practice their understandings of the good and of what constitutes a good life. And it's about how human rights have come to be not abstract universal principles but a practical source of consciousness and practice for real people.

Book Consolidated guidelines on HIV prevention testing treatment service delivery and monitoring

Download or read book Consolidated guidelines on HIV prevention testing treatment service delivery and monitoring written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These consolidated guidelines on HIV prevention, testing, treatment, service delivery and monitoring bring together existing and new clinical and programmatic recommendations across different ages, populations and settings, bringing together all relevant WHO guidance on HIV produced since 2016. It serves as an update to the previous edition of the consolidated guidelines on HIV. These guidelines continue to be structured along the continuum of HIV care. Information on new combination prevention approaches, HIV testing, ARV regimens and treatment monitoring are included. There is a new chapter on advanced HIV disease that integrates updated guidance on the management of important HIV comorbidities, including cryptococcal disease, histoplasmosis and tuberculosis. The chapter on general HIV care, contains a new section on palliative care and pain management, and up to date information on treatment of several neglected tropical diseases, such as visceral leishmaniasis and Buruli ulcer. New recommendations for screening and treating of cervical pre-cancer lesions in women living with HIV are also addressed in this chapter. Guidance on service delivery was expanded to help the implementation and strengthening the HIV care cascade. Importantly, this guidance emphasizes the need for differentiated approaches to care for people who are established on ART, such as reduced frequency of clinic visits, use of multi-month drug dispensing and implementation of community ART distribution. The adoption of these efficiencies is essential to improve the quality of care of people receiving treatment and reduce the burden on health facilities, particularly in resource limited settings.
