Located on the southeastern coast of the South American continent, Buenos Aires sits on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, an estuary formed by the confluence of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. With a population of nearly 3 million people in the city proper and over 15 million in the metropolitan area, Buenos Aires is not only the largest city in Argentina but also one of the largest cities in Latin America. The city is often referred to as the "Paris of South America" due to its wide boulevards, grand architecture, and rich cultural life. However, Buenos Aires has a unique charm all its own, rooted in its complex history and diverse population. The city's architecture ranges from colonial buildings to modern skyscrapers, and its neighborhoods, known as barrios, each have their own distinct character. From the historic streets of San Telmo to the upscale avenues of Recoleta, Buenos Aires offers a multitude of experiences for visitors. Buenos Aires is renowned for its vibrant arts scene. It is a city where music, dance, theater, and visual arts thrive. One of the most captivating aspects of Buenos Aires is its food culture. The city is a gastronomic paradise, offering a diverse array of culinary delights. From traditional Argentine parrillas (steakhouses) serving mouth-watering cuts of beef to trendy restaurants offering international cuisine, Buenos Aires caters to all tastes. The city is also known for its vibrant café culture, with numerous coffee shops where locals and visitors alike can relax and enjoy a cortado or a medialuna. Buenos Aires is a city of contrasts. Its history is marked by periods of great prosperity and severe economic crises, which have left their imprint on the city. Today, Buenos Aires is a bustling metropolis with a rich cultural heritage and a dynamic contemporary scene. It is a city that continually reinvents itself while remaining deeply rooted in its traditions. As you explore Buenos Aires, you will find a city that is at once familiar and surprising. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a massive wave of immigration transformed the cultural landscape of Argentina. Alongside other immigrants to Buenos Aires, German speakers strove to carve out a place for themselves as Argentines without fully relinquishing their German language and identity. Their story sheds light on how pluralistic societies take shape and how immigrants negotiate the terms of citizenship and belonging. Focusing on social welfare, education, religion, language, and the importance of children, Benjamin Bryce examines the formation of a distinct German-Argentine identity. Through a combination of cultural adaptation and a commitment to Protestant and Catholic religious affiliations, German speakers became stalwart Argentine citizens while maintaining connections to German culture. Even as Argentine nationalism intensified and the state called for a more culturally homogeneous citizenry, the leaders of Buenos Aires's German community advocated for a new, more pluralistic vision of Argentine citizenship by insisting that it was possible both to retain one's ethnic identity and be a good Argentine. Drawing parallels to other immigrant groups while closely analyzing the experiences of Argentines of German heritage, Bryce contributes new perspectives on the history of migration to Latin America—and on the complex interconnections between cultural pluralism and the emergence of national cultures.

Download or read book Walter s Welcome written by Eva Neisser Echenberg and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Number 47 on Book Authority's 94 Best Nazi Germany Books of All Time!** Walter’s Welcome is the story of Walter Neisser and the more than fifty members of his family he helped to escape Nazi Germany. The story is told through the letters of the Neisser family, which have been meticulously translated and arranged by Walter’s niece, Eva, who also provides moving historical contextualization and commentary. After fleeing Germany, the Neissers resettled in Peru. However, their flight was neither easy nor seamless. Walter worked tirelessly to provide the resources and guidance necessary for the many members of the family to escape, but communications to Europe were frazzled and travel off the continent became increasingly impossible with each passing day, requiring extraordinary will and coordination to contact the correct officials and receive the necessary documentation. The family’s letters reveal the toll these efforts put on them and the challenges of waiting and surviving in a foreign land as they tried to hold together. The story of Jewish escapees to Latin America has only recently begun to be widely explored. This memoir-in-letters explores the difficulties of daily life in this little explored context, as the Neisser family and many other escaped Jews adjusted to a new home and tried to build a new life in the shadow of the many horrific things happening back in the land they’d left behind.
