Book Gustav Mahler Richard Strauss

Download or read book Gustav Mahler Richard Strauss written by Gustav Mahler and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-06-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss came to know one another as young conductors in Leipzig in 1887. From then until Mahler's death in 1911—the year of the first performance of Der Rosenkavalier—they kept in touch. Mahler himself described their relationship as that of two miners tunneling from opposite directions with the hope of eventually meeting. This first publication of their correspondence, which includes twenty-five previously unknown Strauss letters, offers a portrait of two men who were as antithetical in their musical means and goals as in their temperaments and personalities, but who exercised a strong fascination for one another. These sixty-three letters show both composers advancing in their careers as they battled against adverse conditions in the musical world at the turn of the century. They present Mahler's energetic support of Strauss's Symphonia Domestica, which Mahler conducted in 1904 and, in turn, Strauss's championing of Mahler's music, especially the Second and Third Symphonies. The correspondence is fully annotated and is supplemented with a major essay by Herta Blaukopf. "Unfailingly absorbing. . . . An indispensable addition to the literature on these composers."—Norman Del Mar, Times Literary Supplement

Book excerpt: In his apostolic letter Patris Corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis reflects on Saint Joseph and his multifaceted role as a father. The purpose of this letter, Pope Francis writes, “is to increase our love for this great saint, to encourage us to implore his intercession and to imitate his virtues and his zeal.” Saint Joseph is a beloved father; a tender, loving father; an obedient father; an accepting father; a creatively courageous father; a working father; and a father in the shadows. As protector, advocate, and guardian of the Holy Family, Saint Joseph has always been venerated as a father to all Christians. With this letter, promulgated on the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church, Pope Francis proclaimed a Year of Saint Joseph from December 8, 2020, to December 8, 2021. Patris Corde ends with a new prayer to Saint Joseph, and the OSV edition includes additional prayers and a litany to this beloved saint.

Book The Myth of the Liberal Media

Download or read book The Myth of the Liberal Media written by Edward S. Herman and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1999 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Myth of the Liberal Media contends that the mainstream media are parts of a market system and that their performance is shaped primarily by proprietor/owner and advertiser interests. Using a propaganda model, it is argued that the commercial media protect and propagandize for the corporate system. Case studies of major media institutions--the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Philadelphia Inquirer--are supplemented by detailed analyses of "word tricks and propaganda" and the media's treatment of topics such as Third World elections, the Persian Gulf War, the North American Free Trade Agreement, the fall of Suharto, and corporate junk science.

Book The Business Affairs of Mr Julius Caesar

Download or read book The Business Affairs of Mr Julius Caesar written by Bertolt Brecht and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bertolt Brecht's extraordinary historical novel presents an aspiring scholar's efforts to write an idealized life of Julius Caesar twenty years after his death. But the historian abandons his planned biography, confronted by a baffling range of contradictory views. Was Caesar an opportunist, a permanently bankrupt businessman who became too big for the banks to allow him to fail – as his former banker claims? Did he stumble into power while trying to make money, as suggested by the diary of his former slave? Across these different versions of Caesar's career in the political and economic life of Rome, Brecht wryly contrasts the narratives of imperial progress with the reality of grasping self-interest, in a sly allegory that points to the Weimar Republic and perhaps even to our own times. Brecht reminds his readers of the need for constant vigilance and critical suspicion towards the great figures of the past. In an echo of his dramatic theories, the audience is confronted with its own task of active interpretation rather than passive acceptance -- we have to work out our own views about Mr Julius Caesar. This edition is translated by Charles Osborne and features an introduction and editorial notes by Anthony Phelan and Tom Kuhn.

Book Gustav Mahler and Hungary

Download or read book Gustav Mahler and Hungary written by Zoltan Roman and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with his employment by a Hungarian family as piano tutor in 1879, Mahler's contacts with Hungary spanned a full quarter of a century. They included the most significant period of some three years when he directed the Royal Hungarian Opera, exercising artistic control over a major institution for the first time, and ended with his guiding from afar of an early and astonishing performance of the complete Third Symphony in Budapest in 1905. Published accounts (especially of his work between 1888 and 1891) are variously anecdotal, inaccurate or incomplete. This work, then, is the first comprehensive examination of Mahler's connections with Hungary, based on primary sources (many published in English here for the first time) and documented secondary evidence. While Chapter III, devoted to Mahler's three seasons as director, is the focus and bulk of the book, Chapters II and IV provide a socio-cultural setting for the period, essential to an understanding of his lot as opera director. The framing chapters concern Mahler's road to Budapest on the one hand, and his Hungarian contacts after 1891 on the other. With its rich offering of documents and many illustrations, this book presents a scholarly, yet highly readable and fascinating account of an important part of Mahler's life and career.

Book Angels in the Ozarks

Download or read book Angels in the Ozarks written by J. B. Hogan and published by Pen L Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1940, after a rocky six and one half-year run, professional baseball died in Fayetteville. And it has never returned. "Angels in the Ozarks" tells the story of a nearly forgotten Class D minor league once described as the "smallest league that ever functioned in organized baseball." Looking back, there's a poignancy about the old Arkansas-Missouri League and the Fayetteville Angels having faded into a virtual black hole of obscurity. The raucous, rowdy sounds of wood on horsehide, of called strikes and balls and outs, of joyous shouts of victory and unhappy cries of defeat, these are now no more than a faint-almost lost-echo, barely floating somewhere in the ether of forgotten history. "Few people are still vertical who remember the Arkansas State and Arkansas/Missouri leagues. That is now changing due to the diligent efforts of Jerry Hogan who would not let that era pass into oblivion. For nearly a decade, he scoured the pages of time-worn documents, talked with scores people and searched grainy microfilm reels to bring a golden era in baseball to life for generations to come. Great job, Mr. Hogan. " John Hall, baseball historian and researcher, author of Majoring in the Minors, The KOM League Remembered and Mickey Mantle: Before the Glory, and former batboy for the Carthage (Mo.) Cubs
