Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written using official records and other sources, British Rule in China is the first systematic account of the legal history of Weihaiwei, a small territory leased by China to Britain in 1898. It is a fascinating and accessible account of the territory's constitution, laws, courts, judges and magistrates, penal policy, and police force. The book explores the various problems and controversies faced by the local authorities in administering justice as well as their attempts to resolve them. This is the first work to examine thoroughly, through research into the law, the history of Weihaiwei under British rule. Whilst looking also at the legal status of Weihaiwei, its laws and institutions, this work also pays attention to particular aspects of the legal system which had the greatest impact on the lives of the ordinary villagers in this part of China. Based on extensive research of primary sources, British Rule in China is a fascinating and readable account of a legal system and the response of the territory's Chinese residents to it. Book British Mandarins and Chinese Reformers

Download or read book British Mandarins and Chinese Reformers written by Pamela Atwell and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1985 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on previously untapped British and Chinese documents, this is a comparative study of British and Chinese administrative methods in the small rural district of Weihaiwei in the northeast Shantung Province. The British leased the territory from the Chinese in 1898 with the intention of maintaining traditional forms of government whenever possible. But in 1930, the Chinese officials of Chiang Kai-Shek's Nationalist government stepped in to administer the area. Ignoring the province's governmental heritage, instituting an inappropriate bureaucratic structure, and imposing continuous tax demands, they ultimately lost the faith and respect of the local people. A foreword by Dr. N. J. Miners compares and contrasts Weihaiwei's rendition to China in 1930 with the forthcoming return to Hong Kong to China in 1997.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting account of a British Chinese regiment in action The Weihaiwei Regiment, or as it was also known, The 1st Chinese Regiment, was a British Army regiment formed in British Weihaiwei in 1898 from the men of Shantung Province. It was led by British officers and colour sergeants. Major Hamilton Bower of the Indian Staff Corps was given the local rank of lieutenant- colonel and appointed commandant of the new regiment. By 1900 the regiment consisted of 420 men organised into seven companies and was highly regarded for its drill, military appearance and marksmanship. The regiment saw active service during the Boxer Rebellion. In its first action in March 1900, men of the regiment led by Lt Col. Bower put down a failed uprising in Chengfoo. Two hundred men of the regiment in four companies were nominated to serve in the Boxer Rebellion, arriving in Tientsen in late June 1900.Fighting alongside United States Marines, two British captains and 21 Chinese NCOs and other ranks were killed during this campaign whilst two majors, one colour sergeant and 15 Chinese NCOs and other ranks were wounded. The regiment took an active part in the relief of Peking and smaller expeditions including Tu Liu and Peitsang. This book was written shortly after the events described within it by a British captain of the regiment who witnessed many of the events at first hand and, of course, had ready access to other members of the regiment who were able to recount their own experiences to him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial civil servant, Confucian scholar, and collector of Chinese art, Sir James Stewart Lockhart spent more than forty years in Hong Kong and Weihaiwei — the former British leased territory in northern China. His career reflects tension and upheaval in the emerging colony of Hong Kong and in a China rapidly giving way to civil war. In her vivid biography of Stewart Lockhart, Shiona Airlie presents a portrait of an imperial official who fought against racism, strove to preserve the Chinese way of life, and was treated by Chinese mandarins as one of their own. Sir James Stewart Lockhart (1858–1937) was a Scot who served for more than 40 years as a colonial official in Hong Kong and Weihaiwei — Britain’s leased territory in northern China. In Hong Kong (1879– 1902) he rose to the highest levels and brought a refreshingly different approach to colonial rule. He immersed himself in Chinese culture, made friends with local leaders, strengthened Chinese institutions, and fought against racism. When the colony was extended in 1898 he was given the important task of delineating the boundaries of the New Territories and organising its administration. As Britain's first Civil Commissioner (1902–21) in remote Weihaiwei, he brought a unique approach to administration — a combination of Scottish laird and Confucian mandarin — and maintained peace and order during troubled times. A fine Chinese scholar, he amassed a large collection of Chinese coins, art and artefacts. Shiona Airlie's lively account of Stewart Lockhart's life and times makes use of his private papers and extensive archival research. This classic study provides valuable insight into the character, career and friends of an imperial official of rare talent and achievement.

Barnes and published by . This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boxers - more properly the Society of Harmonious Fists - were a popular xenophobic Chinese movement that arose at the end of the 19th century in protest at the increasing domination of China by foreign powers and the associated activities of Christian missionaries. In 1899 the Boxers seized control of the capital, Beijing, and persuaded the Dowager Quing Empress to become their figurehead leader. Foreigners in the city retreated to the legation quarter which was besieged by the Boxers. Eight powers - Britain, the US, Russia, Germany, France, Japan, Italy and Austria - launched a relief expedition which reached Beijing and lifted the siege after 100 days. This book tells the story of the British-officered Chinese regiment in the suppression of the Boxer Uprising.

Book Gunboats Empire and the China Station

Download or read book Gunboats Empire and the China Station written by Matthew Heaslip and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining Britain's imperial outposts in 1920s East Asia, this book explores the changes and challenges affecting the Royal Navy's third largest fleet, the China Station, as its crews fought to hold back the changing tides of fortune. Bridging the gap between high level naval strategy and everyday imperial culture, Heaslip highlights the importance of the China Station to the British imperial system, foreign policy and East Asian geopolitics, while also revealing the lived experiences of these imperial outposts. Following their immersion into a new world and the challenges they encountered along the way, it considers how its naval officers were perceived by the Chinese populations of the ports they visited, how the two communities interacted and what this meant at a time of 'peace'. Against the changing nature of Britain's informal empire in the 1920s, Gunboats, Empire and the China Station highlights the complex nature of naval operations in-between major conflicts, and calls into question how peaceful this peacetime truly was.
