Book excerpt: In March 1945 British Major Tom Harrisson and 42 Australian, New Zealand and British guerrillas dropped behind enemy lines in Borneo in an operation designed to assist the Australian Imperial Force’s (AIF) landings on the island, the largest amphibious operation in Australia’s history. In a matter of months the guerrillas moved well beyond their initial intelligence gathering mission, disrupting enemy supply lines, mounting raids on Japanese outposts, ambushing and often beheading, Japanese soldiers in the jungle. By the War’s end they had killed over 1,000 enemy. When Japan surrendered in August 1945, the AIF abruptly wound-up operations, leaving the Borneo tribespeople and brothers-in-arms to the fate of two roaming Japanese companies. Harrisson led a small band of guerrillas to hunt down these renegades, forcing their surrender on 30 October 1945, ten weeks after the war’s official end. Harrisson required his men to live off the land and at times, appeared oblivious to their appalling conditions. Nevertheless all 42 members of his force survived the war. But rather than revere their leader, many hated him and three wanted to kill him.

Behind this late coming-out lay a long and unusual preparation in looking at nature for its aesthetic qualities, collecting found objects, making flower arrangements and practising ikebana. Her art found an appreciative audience from the start. She was a people person, and it pleased her that through her exhibiting career of 25 years, her works were acquired by people of all ages, interests and backgrounds, as well as by the major public institutions on both sides of the Tasman Sea.

For some, this approach has been drawn on for decades, and for others it signifies a changing of the guard, yet however we arrive there, the conclusion is the same: Contemporary Ballet is not a style. That is to say, it is not a trend, phase, or fashionable term that will fade, rather it is a clear period in ballet's time deserved of investigation. And it is into this moment that we enter"--

In ballet and dance he grew beyond his early years as Ninette de Valois' protégé within the Vic-Wells Ballet in the 1930s, to become premier danseur with the Company in the 1940s, guest artist with The Royal Ballet in the 1950s and 1960s, and finally director of Australian Ballet. In drama he acted with the Old Vic and the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, collaborated frequently with his partner, Michael Benthall, with Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, and with Katharine Hepburn. In film his many performances brought him international celebrity, particularly in The Red Shoes, The Tales of Hoffmann and as the demonic Child-Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Helpmann's creative stamina was legendary. His personality embraced enigmas, complexities, a delight in continuous shape-changing and role-play (he was a master of stage-makeup); but these qualities accompanied a profound, whole-hearted and life-long commitment to all that we understand to be the 'theatre'. Clearly no one writer could do full justice to all the manifestations of Helpmann's genius. This was the reason for drawing on the many specialists and one-time colleagues whose essays and reminiscences make up this publication. But, as it is over thirty years since Helpmann's death and few are alive who experienced his early triumphs, the writers' verbal evocations of his theatrical persona are supported by over seventy photographs. To supplement these, a DVD offers filmed material of archival value and engages with the challenges facing attempts to revive Helpmann's choreographies today.
