Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wedding Bells: With Other Poems I. Listen! it is the chime of wedding bells, That comes through th' intervening woods at ev'n Scarce heard; and, with alternate falls and swells, Vibrates and floats amid the azure Heav'n. How musical! and what a tale it tells Of nuptial promises received and giv'n; Glad hearts, and glowing smiles, and dancing eyes, Extatic hopes, and airy gaieties. II. Alas! the very bell that now spreads wide A tale of joy and triumph, soon shall tell A different story of the selfsame Bride. The marriage-lay and death-strain in that bell; The merry peal and dolorous toll abide. There's rapture now in every fall and swell; There's anguish, grief, and woe in every toll That soon shall sound o'er the departing soul. Download or read book Selected Poems written by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For critics like John Ruskin and Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1892) was one of the great creative figures of the day, a painter and a poet of major stature. Yeats and the young Pound regarded him as an exemplary figure of solitary dedication to art and beauty. He called the sonnet 'a moment's monument', and his best short lyrics are instants of oppressed emotion cut free of time. In this, as in the suggestiveness of his imagery, he anticipates the French Symbolists. He can also be regarded as the founder of modern verse translation, not only for the freshness of his versions but also for his choice of poets---Villon, Cavalcanti and the young Dante. In this selection, Clive Wilmer has made a personal choice, emphasizing the 'pure poetry' of the lyrics at the expense of the more conventionally Victorian monologues and narratives. He has also included a generous selection from the translations, and provided a biographical and critical introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This healthy collection of new poems and selections from seven previous volumes is remarkable for its generosity of spirit, manifested in a warm surrealism that is often turned with humor toward his own past as a way of understanding the recurrent questions of growing old: 'Why did it take so long / for me to get lenient? What does it mean one life / only?' " -- Publishers Weekly (starred review) "Gerald Stern's achievement is immense. In this beautiful gathering . . . one encounters a poet who praises and mourns in turn and even at once." -- Grace Schulman, The Nation "Stern is one of those rare poetic souls who makes it almost impossible to remember what our world was like before his poetry came to exalt it." -- C. K. Williams
