Book Water Weather and the Mountain West

Download or read book Water Weather and the Mountain West written by Robert William Sandford and published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing populations, increasing industrial use and heavy agricultural demand are beginning to tax water supplies in many regions of Canada. Since many rivers are already fully allocated to numerous uses, future economic and social development will depend upon how much we know about our surface and ground water resources and how effectively we manage them—especially in the face of climate change. The message to take home from this eloquent book is that it is time to dispel the myth of limitless abundance of water in Canada and throughout North America. We all need to be mindful that though our technologically sophisticated society is largely fuelled and lubricated by refined petroleum, it ultimately runs on plain water. In his conclusion to this authoritative book, Robert Sandford, chair of Canada’s United Nations Water for Life Decade, offers a realistic picture of the various issues and threats related to the future availability and quality of fresh water in Canada.

Book HC 484 Power Outages and Extreme Weather Conditions in the West of Scotland

Download or read book HC 484 Power Outages and Extreme Weather Conditions in the West of Scotland written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Scottish Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local authority and power company response to the severe weather of 2013 in Kintyre, Arran and Wigtownshire shows that important lessons have been learned and improvements put in place since the Committee last reported on this issue, in August 2012. The Committee is satisfied that all three councils affected by the severe weather have in place robust contingency planning for emergencies, which proved effective. Crucially, the compensation for those left without power - with all the damage that can cause - has been brought into line with the rest of the country. The Committee's conclusion's included that: emergency plans should prioritise accessing mobile phone base stations to restore lost signals; the A83 is a vital artery for the Kintyre peninsula and the decision to upgrade it to a trunk road is an important one, as this will allow the resources of Transport Scotland to be deployed to keep it open during extreme weather conditions; the new Hunterston-Kintyre transmission line will mean there will be two transmission lines serving the Kintyre peninsula, so the failure of one of the lines will not see Kintyre & Arran cut off from the power network; and caring for vulnerable members of the community is another statutory responsibility of local authorities: local authorities have done a great deal of work to expand their databases and identify those who are in need but councils should also do more to support the community groups that are engaging local people in the process of caring for the vulnerable

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: And Now . . . the Weather Sundogs, haloes, dust devils, snow pillars, blizzards, clippers, snowflakes, crepuscular rays, thunderstorms, lightning, rainbows, moonbows, and more With Keith C. Heidorn, The Weather Doctor, who is known to Internet weather enthusiasts around the globe. Severe weather is dramatic, but rarely experienced. Heidorn focuses instead on the "hows," "whens," "wheres," "whys," and specially the "joys" of daily weather - the phenomena that shape our lives, yet never make it into history books. "Always keep those weather eyes up " So says weather aficionado Keith C. Heidorn whose inveterate curiosity and far-reaching scientific knowledge of meteorology form the foundation for the fascinating explanations of everyday weather phenomena that fill the pages of And Now. . . the Weather. After a lifetime of watching weather systems unfold, Heidorn observes the weather in relation to the sun, the driving force behind all weather conditions. Thus, in And Now. . . the Weather, he uses seasonal cycles as a framework, starting with the winter solstice and moving through the calendar year, recording weather facts and events under the month in which they most frequently occur. To help us train our "weather senses" so that we become more aware of the conditions surrounding us, Heidorn covers weather topics that are familiar in an informative and entertaining style. It is his hope that we will pause to enjoy, understand, and even anticipate the beauty of weather. A helpful collection of diagrams, maps, and black-and-white photographs illustrate Heidorn's weather scenarios, showing us exactly what to look for when we "keep our weather eyes up."
