Book We Preach Christ Crucified

Download or read book We Preach Christ Crucified written by Michael E. Connors and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June of 2012, an astounding 360 people gathered at the University of Notre Dame for a major conference on Catholic preaching. With contributions by a wide variety of theologians and practitioners, We Preach Christ Crucified gathers the fruits of those days spent reflecting on the importance of the preaching ministry. Its release is timely, given the US bishops' promulgation of a new document on preaching, Preaching the Mystery of Faith: The Sunday Homily (January, 2013), and the renewed emphasis on preaching by both Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis. The challenges facing Christian preachers in our time are many and formidable ones. The authors in this collection take a fresh look at the task, the resources at hand, the contemporary context, and the preacher. The result is a refreshing and stunningly hopeful reconsideration of an ancient ministry. We Preach Christ Crucified includes essays by: Robert Barron Archbishop Robert J. Carlson John C. CavadiniArchbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS Mary Catherine Hilkert, OPJan Michael Joncas Barbara E. Reid, OP Michael E. Book Preaching Christ from the Old Testament

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing for the need both to preach Christ in every sermon and to preach regularly from the Old Testament, Sidney Greidanus develops a christocentric method that will help preachers do both simultaneously. Greidanus challenges Old Testament scholars to broaden their focus and to understand the Old Testament not only in its own historical context but also in the context of the New Testament. Suggesting specific steps and providing concrete examples, this volume provides a practical guide for preaching Christ from the Old Testament.

Download or read book We Preach Christ written by T. A. Prickett and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-12-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a short and to the point book on pastors and preaching. It is designed for the busy biovocational pastor who may not have the time nor desire to read a larger book on preaching. Much of the material in this book reflects the material in other books on preaching, but this book does contain some ideas that will not be found in any other book on preaching. This book suggests that a pastor who desires to see his people grow spiritually and in Biblical understanding would be well served to develop the practice of preaching through the books of the Bible. It points our some distinct advantages to the preacher and the congregation in this plan of preaching. The last section of the book contains some sermons that were prepared in the manner suggested by the author.

Book Preaching Christ in All of Scripture

Download or read book Preaching Christ in All of Scripture written by Edmund P. Clowney and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2003-06-06 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voicing one theme for the entire Bible and structuring all sermons around that idea may seem to be an impossible challenge. For veteran pastor and preaching professor Edmund Clowney it will not do to preach a text from either the Old or New Testaments without fully preaching its ultimate and primary focus-the person and work of Jesus Christ. He writes, "To see the text in relation to Christ is to see it in its larger context, the context of God's purpose in revelation." Clowney's rationale for emphasizing Christ's presence in the Old Testament rests on the purpose of the Hebrew Scripture. The Old Testament follows God's one great plan for human history and redemption, and the plan is not only from him but centers on him: his presence in his incarnate Son. The witness of the Scriptures to Christ is the reason they were written, so it is appropriate to emphasize this element in the Old Testament as well as in the New Testament. By offering numerous full-length examples of his own sermons that emphasize Christ as the principle theme of Scripture, Clowney illustrates for those who will never have the privilege of being his students how they can craft sermons which present Christ as the primary consideration of the text. He also offers specific instructions on preparing such a sermon. He discusses the personal habits of prayer and Bible study that prepare pastors to seek out Christ's presence. Clowney emphasizes the importance of including a specific application in every sermon so that Christ is presented both in what he says and does to reveal himself in the biblical text and in what he says and does to direct Christians' lives today. Students preparing for the pastorate, pastors desiring to increase their emphasis on Christ in their sermons, and those seeking Christ's presence in all of Scripture will find a help in Clowney's writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerhard O. Forde wrote and taught powerfully about the primary importance of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ. In an article in the Lutheran Quarterly, he wrote: "Let us be . . . radical preachers and practitioners of the gospel by justification by faith without the deeds of the law. . . . What is at stake is the radical gospel, radical grace, the eschatological nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ crucified and risen." The sermons in this book were prepared for congregational worship and seminary chapel services. They accompany scripture readings throughout the church year. They encourage, they reprove, they explicate tenets of the faith, they focus the biblical story. And without exception they point to the loving God who comes to us in Jesus Christ, that great good news of God s grace.

Book excerpt: It is my desire, through the writing of The Gospel We Preach, to bring an exposition of the different aspects and truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Preaching may take many different forms, whether from the church pulpit or in more relaxed environments in coffee bars or small groups. Water can come in various containers, but it is still water! The Gospel can be presented in various ways, but it must still be the Gospel that eventually leads to genuine repentance to life. It is a love story of God seeking to bring a lost world back into relationship with Himself. It is a plan that called for the greatest sacrifice the universe has ever seen. It is the Gospel of God's grace and love that offers every living soul the opportunity to step out of spiritual darkness and death into the abundant life of Christ. This book will take you on a journey through the great truths of salvation that every believer needs to understand. To become a disciple and fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ, it is vitally important to understand who we are in Christ and how this new life He offers really transforms. The Gospel We Preach can be given to those who may not as yet come to faith in Christ, and it will be a great resource for all believers, whether new to the faith or have been serving God for many years. For those who aspire to become preachers and those who have perhaps been serving the Lord in ministry for many years, my prayer is that this book will inspire you to preach the Gospel with all its amazing love, passion, and power. The book is illustrated with some personal testimony and some amusing incidents. May you be blessed as you read The Gospel We Preach.

Download or read book Privilege the Text written by Abraham Kuruvilla and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Privilege the Text! spans the conceptual gap between biblical text and life application by providing a rigorous theological hermeneutic for preaching. Kuruvilla describes the theological entity that is the intermediary between ancient text and modern audience, and defines its crucial function in determining valid application. Based on this hermeneutic, he submits a new mode of reading Scripture for preaching: a Christiconic interpretation of the biblical text, a hermeneutically robust way to understand the depiction of the Second Person of the Trinity in Scripture. In addition, Kuruvilla’s work provides a substantive theology of spiritual formation through preaching: what it means to obey God, the Christian’s responsibility to undertake “faith-full” obedience to divine demand, and the incentives for such obedience—all integral to understanding the sermonic movement from text to application. Privilege the Text! promises to be useful not only for preachers, and students and teachers of homiletics, but for all who are interested in the exposition of Scripture that culminates in application for the glory of God.
