Book I ll No Tell You Again

Download or read book I ll No Tell You Again written by Tony Roper and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Tony Roper discovered at the age of twenty- seven that acting could be a proper job, it changed his life forever. Having drifted from occasional schooling to various adventures on the bread vans, down the mines and in the shipyards, Tony then saw an advert in the newspaper for part-time actors to star opposite glamorous actresses. He liked the sound of that, and it was to be the start of a whole new life. Now, for the first time, Tony tells his colourful life story. There's his large extended family which had more than its fair share of characters, his father's secret war record, the incident with the bread knife and his brother, his narrow escapes from death, and plenty of unexpected family revelations. Then there's his time as the legendary Jamesie Cotter in Rab C. Nesbitt , his enduring friendship (and the odd fallout) with Rikki Fulton, hilarious appearances in Only an Excuse?, Scotch & Wry and Naked Video , in-depth discussions with Billy Connolly about who really makes the best pies, how he came to write his classic play The Steamie - and why it nearly didn't make it to the stage. Tony also describes his shocking recent health scares and his agonising decision about whether to go for a life-saving operation or play one last game for Dukla Pumpherston. I'll No Tell You Again is the inspiring and hilarious autobiography of one of our funniest and best-loved actors, known to millions as Tony Roper and to his family as... well, read it and you'll find out!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailing the ways in which the Canadian government built on existing programs for veterans, Peter Neary identifies the key figures and events responsible for developing the orders and statutes that came to be known as the Veterans Charter, creating the Department of Veterans Affairs, and establishing sweeping new benefits for servicemen and women. Comparing rehabilitation programs after the Second World War with those after the First World War, Neary reveals the lasting importance of the country's new way of expressing its obligations to veterans. He shows that the measures developed to reintegrate them into civilian society became essential building blocks for the Canadian welfare state and helped pave the way for the unprecedented prosperity of the 1950s. A comprehensive study of a fundamental change in the relationship between government and citizens, On to Civvy Street is also a timely reminder of the debt the country owes its veterans.

Book excerpt: Three friends, Daniel, Ruth and Arthur, have survived the Second World War and are determined, in their different ways, to play a part in preventing such a catastrophe from ever happening again. Almost by accident Arthur wins a seat in Parliament in the 1945 General Election. To Daniel's great satisfaction the Army assigns him a job preparing for the peace-keeping rôle of the new United Nations Organization. Ruth has an idea for a novel that will remind people of a different Germany that existed before the years of the Kaiser and Hitler. Daniel and Ruth also have unfinished business from 1939, when they had postponed their plans to marry; and each is uncertain about whether to reveal a wartime secret to the other. Arthur is impatient to start a family. However, as in the years before 1939, it is public events in distant places that determine how their private lives develop; and the action moves between London, New York, Switzerland and Paris in ways that they couldn't have predicted.

Book excerpt: My Granddad Jonathan Slater of Dartmouth was a very special person. He has always held a very special place in my heart. His letters present quite a history of WWII in Dartmouth. The times were very hard and Granddad had the additional heartache of losing his wife at the end of 1939. His firstborn son, my father, Jonathan was living in the USA. Jonathan had come over to the USA in 1930, and married Agnes Reinertsen in 1938. His second son Jocelyn served in the London Irish Rifles and was taken captive in Tunisia in January, 1943. He was held in Italy, Campo PG70, Monteurano, and then sent north to Stalag IVB in Germany. The Russian Army under General Koniev liberated the camp which was located on the Elbe River in April, 1945. This collection of letters tells the story of civilian life in England during the war years through the eyes of my Grandfather and ends with the return of my Uncle Jocelyn to England in 1945.

Alfred lost his wife of forty-odd years in 2004 and was then informed by his urologist that he had prostate cancer with six months to live. Book Diary of a Red Devil

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert Blockwell
  • Publisher : Casemate Publishers
  • Release : 2008-10-19
  • ISBN : 1908916060
  • Pages : 346 pages

Download or read book Diary of a Red Devil written by Albert Blockwell and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2008-10-19 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about the Second World War and the majority of them either concentrate on a particular battle, campaign or unit. Individual accounts are certainly in a minority and those from the lower ranks even more scarcer. Helion and Co Ltd are therefore pleased to announce the publication of Diary of A Red Devil. It relates the war time experiences of a young man, Albert Blockwell from the northeast of England, who in February 1940 was called up for service with the Army. Initially conscripted into the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and trained as a vehicle mechanic, he was then posted in March 1940 to a prewar Territorial unit - The 7th Kings Own Scottish Borderers, then a home defense unit based near London. His diary is a most interesting account of a young vehicle mechanic who also had to learn to be a infantry soldier. Albert remained with this unit for all his wartime service, later going to the Shetland Islands when the 7th KOSB were part of OSDEF (Orkney and Shetlands Defence Force). Then in late 1943 much to their surprise the unit was posted to Lincolnshire to become the third infantry unit in the 1st Airlanding Brigade then in the process of returning from Italy with the rest of the 1st Airborne Division. Swapping their glengarries for red berets Albert and his comrades had to adapt to their new way of getting to war by glider. The diary continues with a down to earth account of the highs and lows of the next few months. Then in September 1944 Albert flew to Holland on Operation Market-Garden and his account (written in PoW camp) describes the savage nine days fighting at Arnhem from the slit trench level. Taken prisoner on the last day his account then describes the spartan life in PoW camp without pulling any punches. Sadly Albert died in 2001 but his diary survived and his daughter Maggie Clifton together with help from two published 'Arnhem' authors have edited a unique account of the fighting at Arnhem from the front-line soldier's perspective. Key sales points: Unique personal account of the formation of Britain's airborne forces and their epic actions during Operation Market Garden, The diary is supplemented by extensive annotations from acknowledged Arnhem expert Niall Cherry providing additional information relating to the units and individuals mentioned in Albert's diary, Features a large number of rare photographs and documents.

Book Memoirs of a Royal Air Force Oil Rag

Download or read book Memoirs of a Royal Air Force Oil Rag written by Bob Blackmore and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incredible life that spanned for nearly a century... Robert Collins Blackmore, or 'Blackie' as he was known in the RAF, grew up as a sickly child, but would soon become one of the unsung heroes of World War Two. Stricken with family tragedy, the young Blackmore continued with his fascination with anything mechanical, only to find more hardships to follow. Honoured with the Atlantic Star for bravery, burned in a freak engine room explosion, and meeting Winston Churchill on a cold and sinister night, are just some aspects of this humble unpresuming man. This is the story of one man's fight for survival, lost love, and an inner strength to knuckle down and get the job done. Bob left the RAF to enjoy the rest of his life with his wife Jacque until his passing in 2009 at the age of 92. Excerpt 'BANG! - My right knee was torn apart as I was blown past the starboard engine gear lever. I was thrown out of the engine room, over the well deck, and smashed into the cabin entrance.'
