Download or read book We Are Celtic Supporters written by Richard Purden and published by Headline. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In We Are Celtic Supporters Richard Purden examines what created the culture, ideas and beliefs around Celtic football club. In new and exclusive interviews with supporters, he explores the Celtic way of life and the rich traditions that give context to much of the support while deconstructing some myths along the way. As a travelling supporter he visits a variety of fans in locations such as New York, Spain, Germany, Italy and various parts of the UK. He talks to well-known Celtic supporters such as James MacMillan about the often misrepresented Catholic roots, to Pat Nevin about why he fell out of love with the club and to a number of well-known rock 'n' rollers such as Noel Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie and Johnny Marr. We Are Celtic Supporters gives the inside story of how major events in Celtic's history have shaped the identity of the fans, and what it really means to follow this unique football club.

Book Celtic Soccer Crew

Download or read book Celtic Soccer Crew written by John O'Kane and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John O'Kane delivers a gripping tale of a life dedicated to football violence and gives an unparalled insight into the reality of being a career hooligan. With 33 criminal convictions against him, plus a further 33 cases either dropped or with a not guilty verdict, O'Kane has been remanded nine times including one charge of attempted murder when he was aged just 18. He became rapidly embroiled in a life of violence and was in and out of prison just as many times as he was in and out of a hospital bed.His was a life dedicated to the gang he founded, the Celtic Soccer Crew. O'Kane describes the extraordinary struggle of a gang of football hooligans to survive, despite discovering an unexpected enemy: the indomitable Celtic support - a support that guarded its reputation and good name with a passion O'Kane hadn't reckoned with, even as a Celtic supporter himself. But out on the streets and causing mayhem, the Celtic Soccer Crew, including, incredibly, their girlfriends, showed they were not taking grief from anyone.

Book Sport Race Ethnicity and Identity

Download or read book Sport Race Ethnicity and Identity written by Daryl Adair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport has long been a paradoxical environment with respect to issues of 'race', ethnicity, and identity. For much of the twentieth century, sports around the world were enclaves of difference. Whites and non-whites, for example, were separated on the sports field as they were in many ways off the field. Today sport is much more inclusive, with athletic ability of greater importance than skin colour or ancestry. Yet enmity and antagonism still appear in sport via instances of racial vilification or hostility between some groups. Other problems include the relative absence of minorities from positions of power and influence in sport, as well as folkloric assumptions about athletic ability based upon stereotypes about 'race' or ethnic background. This book discusses issues of diversity, capacity and equity in the colourful world of global sport. A panoramic approach, covering 'race', ethnicity and identity is consistent with the contemporary global migration of professional athletes, as well as the multicultural contexts of sport in various regions. This collection of essays therefore addresses international dimensions of sport, commonality and difference, as well as the special circumstances of sport and social relations in particular places. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Download or read book Celtic written by Brian Wilson and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celtic is a club like no other. Its story is a unique one, of a football club founded to raise money to help alleviate poverty within the predominantly Irish immigrant community of Glasgow's East End. Yet, from its inception, Celtic has been a club open to all. From those humble and charitable origins, Celtic have gone on to become one of the most famous names in world football. In 1967, they became the first British club to win the European Cup, while domestically they have won, to date, 47 league titles, 36 Scottish Cups and 16 League Cups. The story of Celtic continues – of success on the field, backed by a strong organisation off it, and all underpinned by a commitment to remain true to the charitable roots of the club. This is just the latest chapter . . .

Book Voices Of The Old Firm

Download or read book Voices Of The Old Firm written by Stephen Walsh and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-12-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of Voices of the Old Firm tells the story of Rangers and Celtic in the words of those who can say 'I was there'. By interviewing players, managers but above all supporters of the two great clubs, Stephen Walsh has built up a unique portrait of sixty years of football in the city. Full of evocative social and historical detail, the book surveys all the great moments since the war - the ups and downs, the triumphs and disasters. What was it like to be in Lisbon for Celtic's epic 1967 European Cup victory, or in Barcelona for Rangers' European triumph of 1972? The different 'voices' which describe these and many other key events include some of the greatest players ever to pull on a green or a blue jersey and they have vivid tales to tell of encounters on the field. But the book also hears the voices of those who have spent their time standing on the terraces or sitting in the stands cheering on their heroes. Ordinary supporters tell of their adventures at home and abroad while following their clubs with sometimes ridiculous levels of devotion. In their own words, they tell of great games of football, but they also describe the fabric of the fan's life - the buses, the songs, the drink, the clothes, the bigotry and the passionate emotion which marks Glasgow out from almost all other footballing cities. This classic oral history has been brought fully up to date with the addition of new material reflecting the way the teams have come to dominate the Scottish football scene in the last ten years. Highlights include Celtic's pilgrimage to Seville for the UEFA Cup final and Rangers' unforgettable championship win of 2005.

Download or read book Our Stories and Our Songs written by Liam Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few histories in sport which can match that chronicled in connection with Celtic Football Club. Yet in all that has been written, little has focused on the support. 'Our Stories And Our Songs' seeks to redress matters by encapsulating the unique identity of the Celtic faithful, who make this famous Club the grand old team it is. The author's passion rings true from the outset, as he documents the backdrop to the community from which the support emanated, before exploring the various enthusiasms and representations of the Club. Readers are then taken on a fascinating journey from 1902 to the present day, which relives an unrivalled heritage. In charting 'special' moments, created by the fans alone; the atmosphere, humour and passion of the support is captured in a manner that both enthrals and warms the heart.Individual supporters tell their personal Celtic stories. These tales are supplemented by the interviews of prominent fans. The platform they are offered provides huge entertainment and testifies the faithful's friendships with supports in Ireland, Germany and Spain (which are each devoted a place within a friendships chapter). The book concludes with a look into the history of different groups that Celtic fans have formed. From those early days when supporters established Brake Clubs to congregate on horse drawn carriage, to today's pilgrimages in Supporters Club buses - the numerous factions have their own distinctive accounts.'Our Stories And Our Songs' is, ultimately, both an historical and contemporary record of a people, their values, hopes and dreams In keeping with the traditions of the Club, all proceeds from this book go to Jay Beatty's 'Down's & Proud' charity.

Book 1 000 Celtic Quotes Notes and Anecdotes

Download or read book 1 000 Celtic Quotes Notes and Anecdotes written by Robert Harvey and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wonderful collection of quotes, notes and anecdotes throughout the history of Celtic. This is a perfect gift to share with Celtic supporters everywhere. Number 1. Celtic jerseys are not for second best, they don't shrink to fit inferior players. Jock Stein. Number 148. My league debut for Celtic was in October 1969 when we played Raith Rovers. Bobby Murdoch was sitting beside me and asked if I was nervous. "No" I replied. "Well" he said, "you are putting your boots on the wrong feet". I looked down and he was right. Kenny Dalglish (Celtic won 7-1). Number 167. I liked Henrik Larssons's modesty. To him he was always part of the team and never played the superstar bit. He never took the credit for himself. Billy Connelly Number 237. A man must be a Celt on and off the field, otherwise he is of no value to this club. Celtic's first manager Willie Maley in the early 1900Os Number 881. Nakamura is such a good player he could open a can of beans with his left foot. Steve Perryman

Book Inside the Divide

Download or read book Inside the Divide written by Richard Wilson and published by Canongate Books. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1888, Rangers and Celtic football clubs have been locked into an intense and frequently explosive rivalry: Rangers the product of West Scotland's Protestant establishment, Celtic the team founded to raise money for the Catholic underclass of Glasgow. On 2 January 2010 the two teams met in the Old Firm's New Year Derby, a fixture that had been banned for ten years because of the trouble it brought with it. Richard Wilson puts that game at the centre of a book which delves into the history and widens out to the cultural resonance of the fixture within Scotland. It is a potent mix of close-up observation and big-picture thinking, with insight, understanding and depth. Fully updated to cover the latest Old Firm stories, including Rangers' dramatic collapse into administration.
