Book excerpt: We all know about the Hells Angels: toughs on Harleys terrorizing the law-abiding; wild brawls and wild sex; drugs and cruelty, beatings, and even murder. But nobody really knows what it's like to be an Angel except an Angel. In this classic of Hells Angels literature, to be read alongside the works of Hunter S. Thompson and Sonny Barger, George Wethern—for many years the vice president of the Oakland Chapter—tells it like it is. Until he found himself in reluctant service to the courts, Wethern was the quintessential Angel. One of the West Coast's top drug dealers, he was a man who loved bikes, fights, women, and drugs; a man who knew the deepest secrets of Angel life. Arrested, strung out, in despair, he bought a precarious freedom by testifying in major trials against Angels members—and then disappeared into the witness protection program. A Wayward Angel is a powerful book, a not-for-the-squeamish portrait of the drug scene and the alienation from modern life in late-twentieth-century California. We witness killings, million-dollar drug deals, and orgy-laced “picnics.” This is a story uniquely American. And it is a terrifying tale—because it's real.

Book Founding Gods Inventing Nations

Download or read book Founding Gods Inventing Nations written by William F. McCants and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the dawn of writing in Sumer to the sunset of the Islamic empire, Founding Gods, Inventing Nations traces four thousand years of speculation on the origins of civilization. Investigating a vast range of primary sources, some of which are translated here for the first time, and focusing on the dynamic influence of the Greek, Roman, and Arab conquests of the Near East, William McCants looks at the ways the conquerors and those they conquered reshaped their myths of civilization's origins in response to the social and political consequences of empire. The Greek and Roman conquests brought with them a learned culture that competed with that of native elites. The conquering Arabs, in contrast, had no learned culture, which led to three hundred years of Muslim competition over the cultural orientation of Islam, a contest reflected in the culture myths of that time. What we know today as Islamic culture is the product of this contest, whose protagonists drew heavily on the lore of non-Arab and pagan antiquity. McCants argues that authors in all three periods did not write about civilization's origins solely out of pure antiquarian interest--they also sought to address the social and political tensions of the day. The strategies they employed and the postcolonial dilemmas they confronted provide invaluable context for understanding how authors today use myth and history to locate themselves in the confusing aftermath of empire.

Divorced, approaching fifty, and mother to a rebellious fifteen-year-old, Kristyna is beginning to feel the strain of her bleak existence—until she finds a new sense of joy when she begins a love affair with a man fifteen years her junior But her escape into romance is far from complete. She worries about her daughter Jana, who has been cutting school, and may be using heroin—the latest plague on the city. And Kristyna’s mother has forced her to accept the personal papers of her dead father, a tyrant whose Stalinist ideals she despised. At a crossroads in her life, she must find a way to put the past behind her and deal with the challenges of the present in a Czechoslovakia that is still trying to overcome years of communist oppression. In this Washington Post Best Book of 2001, Klima “unflinchingly presents the problems facing modern Prague and civilization in general . . . [and] fills it with mercy” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Book Hells Angels at War

Download or read book Hells Angels at War written by Yves Lavigne and published by HarperAudio. This book was released on 1999 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his bestselling Hells Angels: Taking Care of Business, Yves Lavigne blew the lid off an organization that few knew anything about beyond the romanticized image of tough guys, their Harleys and their women. His equally successful sequel, Hells Angels: Into the Abyss, got up close and personal with the Angels, on an exclusive ride with an FBI informant inside the gang. Now, in this third book in his trilogy, Lavigne exposes the slick, technology-savvy new breed of Hells Angels and how they're becoming a very real threat to society in Canada, the US and throughout the world. Even more importantly, he reveals just how powerless law enforcement agencies are to stop what is equivalent to a multi-million dollar corporation that just happens to have the number-one market share in the illegal drugs industry. In 1998, Hells Angels turned 50, doubling in size in the last decade. Yet, most politicians, police officers and the public still haven't responded to the fact that the gang has evolved into a major organized crime force, capable of manipulating both the legal system and the media with deadly professional ease. With his usual meticulous research and insider's knowledge, Lavigne reports on the latest from the Angels' front lines: the purchase of hotels, real estate and businesses for the express use of laundering money; the growing global network of chapters; and the ineffectual response of law enforcement agencies to the escalating violence, gang rivalry and crime. Featuring new and dramatic photographs, maps of club locations and Hells Angels documents, "Hells Angels at War" is both a revealing expose and a not-to-be ignored wake-up call to eliminate this evolving and even deadlier evil, now.
