Book excerpt: A county named for the Revolutionary War general "Mad Anthony" Wayne and a county seat named in honor of the beautiful home of Thomas Jefferson is, without doubt, made up of citizens proud of their history! The town of Monticello has deep roots and a rich heritage that provide inspiration for all its citizens. It has produced musicians like "Blind" Dick Burnett, author of "Man of Constant Sorrow," and Shelby Moore Cullom, who supervised the construction of Abraham Lincoln's burial site in Springfield, Illinois. Years after Daniel Boone came through the Cumberland Gap and followed the Cumberland River into Wayne County, the Army Corps of Engineers constructed Wolf Creek Dam and created Lake Cumberland with over 1,200 miles of shoreline. Much of the lake lies in Wayne County, and enterprising citizens have made Monticello the "Houseboat Manufacturing Capital of the World."

Book Wayne County s Lost River Settlements

Download or read book Wayne County s Lost River Settlements written by Cletis R. Ellinghouse and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-07-23 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayne Countys Lost River Settlements is a history of six hamlets in southeastern Missouri that were destroyed by the government to clear the landscape for development of Lake Wappapello on the St. Francis River in the late 1930s. Several of the profitable river bottom homesteads had been in the families for well over 100 years, but with nothing else to do the evicted farmers moved on reluctantly in what became the greatest upheaval in the history of the county. With so much of Wayne Countys assessed valuation lost in the government buyout, it was feared remaining tax revenues would be inadequate to support essential services and that the countys various parts by necessity soon would be attached to adjoining counties. That didnt happen, but citizens at the doomed county seat, Greenville, struggled through an ordeal of pain and uncertainty that went on for several months before finally coming to an agreement to build a new town outside the flood plain. Greenvilles turmoil and fight for survival is covered in the concluding segment of the book. It lives on as the county seat in its new location, but little is known today of the lost settlementsChaonia, Taskee, Ojibway, Bethel, Center Ridge and Kime, each near the other and all at the time of their destruction closely aligned by blood and marriagewhich gives added significance to the discovery of the papers of Henry Yeakley Mabrey (1836-1915), who spent his childhood at Kime and for the greater part of the rest of his life resided a few miles to the south at Center Ridge, which was just north of Chaonia, whose birth he witnessed in 1888. Chaonia, a railroad town, became the trading center for one of the richest farming areas in the southeastern part of the state. Much of what is known of the settlements formative years is based on information gleaned from the Mabrey papers, which include school, church, governmental, and Civil War journals, as well as diaries, letters, and personal notes. Mr. Mabrey, a teacher, served in a number of political posts, including two terms as commissioner of public schools and two terms as probate judge of Wayne County. The author brings a unique perspective to the story, since he has lived with it since early childhood. As he states in the preface of the book, My involvement, my yen to write about these people, was possibly ordained, for I had heard much chatter about many of the families and of course the lost settlements while growing up at Greenville. It is his hope his work brings a measure of honor if not appreciation to the families in the lost settlements whose sacrifices for the common good were for the most part made without fanfare or public notice.

Book excerpt: Eloise, which started out as a poorhouse, later became known as Wayne County General Hospital. From only 35 residents on 280 acres in 1839, the complex grew dramatically after the Civil War until the total land involved was 902 acres and the total number of patients was about 10,000. Today, all that remains are five buildings and a smokestack. Only one of them, the Kay Beard Building, is currently used. In Eloise: Poorhouse, Farm, Asylum, and Hospital, 1839-1984, this institution and medical center that cared for thousands of people over the years, is brought back to life. The book, in over 220 historic photographs, follows the facility's roots, from its beginnings as a poorhouse, to the founding of its psychiatric division and general hospital. The reader will also be able to trace the changing face of psychiatric care over the years. The book effectively captures what it was like to live, work, and play on Eloise's expansive grounds.

The Hill's and the Evans' had fought over land and squabbled over money for years - taking each other to court, putting up unseen boundaries on land to keep each other out. Mary Hill didn't understand everything about the feud. She knew that Uncle Jesse was shot and killed two years ago, but was really too young to grasp what had happened. So young, and so familiar with sorrow, Mary struggles to keep her family together in the midst of a bitter and violent feud. Just fifteen years old, she is thrust into the role of mother to her twelve siblings, fearful that, with the coming of each new day, a new tragedy will strike. By escaping Garrard County, Mary may be able to save her family from further bloodshed, but can she get them all out in time?

Book Detroit s Woodmere Cemetery

Download or read book Detroit s Woodmere Cemetery written by Gail D. Hershenzon and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1867, a roomful of men gathered in the office of a noted attorney to discuss Detroit's need for a rural cemetery. They decided to form an association and invested their own money to purchase a plot of land that had once been occupied by Native Americans and then French settlers, a few miles from the heart of the city. They chose this heavily wooded area because it offered many acres of land that could accommodate the growing need for more burial space, and it became the cornerstone of one of the city's oldest and most historic cemeteries, Woodmere Cemetery. Cemetery acreage has been bought and sold, and buildings on the grounds have been raised and later razed. Funeral procedures have changed, as well as cemetery ownership. Still, Woodmere has remained one of Detroit's most beautiful treasures, where visitors can take a historical step back into time. From the very rich to the very poor, many thousands have chosen Woodmere Cemetery to be their final resting place. Through archival images, Detroit's Woodmere Cemetery takes a look at the movers and shakers of Detroit found in these bucolic grounds and glimpses the ordinary citizens who have lived and died through extraordinary circumstances.
