Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have a rapacious relationship with the world’s ocean, extracting immeasurable quantities of its inhabitants and resources, while simultaneously depositing unbound sums of pollution into it. If we are to move toward sustainable practices, then we must first move toward ways of thinking about fish and fisheries beyond mere economic agendas. And there is one group in particular who could make an impact: saltwater anglers. Recreational saltwater fishing is big business and big culture. The industry is one of the largest in the United States, but that has not translated into a cohesive effort, agenda, or ethic. Saltwater anglers, a diverse group with a range of motivations, do not belong to a single organization through which to galvanize significant voting or lobbying power toward conservation regulation. As a result, federal policymakers have traditionally focused on commercial harvesting interests. Dubbed the “most contemplative of pastimes,” recreational fishing provides a valuable perspective on how humans interact with saltwater environments. Fishing, Gone? builds on this tradition of reflection and opens up the saltwater sportfishing life as a method for thinking through the current status of marine fisheries and environment. Author Sid Dobrin calls on fellow saltwater anglers to reconsider their relationship to fishes and the ocean—the sport can no longer be only about the joy and freedom of fishing, but it must also be about living for the ocean, living with the ocean, and living through the ocean. It is about securing the opportunity to fish on while meeting the economic and environmental challenges that lie ahead.

Book Tales of Fishing Virgin Seas

Download or read book Tales of Fishing Virgin Seas written by Zane Grey and published by . This book was released on 1925 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stepping off the deck of his three-masted schooner, the Fisherman, at the end of an unparalleled fishing cruise, Zane Grey set down the record, without an instant's delay, of these adventurous weeks. The result is this book, a narrative of adventure and deep-sea fishing, unique even in the career of this great sportsman. Cruising in the dangerous, little-known sections of the Pacific around the Galapagos Islands, the party, putting out from the Fisherman in small boats, threw their lines into the waters often alive with man-eating sharks. At other times, under less strenuous conditions, Zane Grey devoted his time to careful observation, and the recording, cataloguing and photographing of strange and little-known game fish. Here, certainly, is a book that ever good sportsman will wish to own -- a chronicle of adventure and danger, and sport for sport's sake.

Book Offshore Pursuit

Download or read book Offshore Pursuit written by John Unkart and published by Geared Up Publications. This book was released on 2012 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tranquil beauty of a morning sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean is in direct contrast to the savage acts taking place beneath the water's surface. Powerful tails propel half-ton blue marlin at nearly 50 mph, as their bills slash at baitfish. The razor-sharp teach of wahoo cut unsuspecting prey in half. And these predators become the hunted, when anglers venture forth in Offshore Pursuit. Experience what the ultimate sport fishing has to offer: surface eruptions on trolled baits, rods bent in half, drags screaming, and adrenaline pumping. Whether you call blue water your regular fishing grounds or want to experience the thrill for the first time, don't leave success in the hands of Lady Luck. Knowledge and experience are necessary to produce results, and Offshore Pursuit has the information you need to catch big game fish in offshore waters. What baits each species prefers, methods of trolling, types of spreads, how to chunk for tuna, and when and how to use a kite are all covered in detail. Proven methods learned through years of experience are clearly explained to help you catch more fish. From rigging techniques to tips on how to fight trophy fish, it's all in this book.

Book Fishing the Wild Waters

Download or read book Fishing the Wild Waters written by Conor Sullivan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the azure waters of Hawaii to the pristine streams in Alaska to the craggy New England coast, a devoted angler reveals the agony and ectasy of fishing. Fishing the Wild Waters invites us to traverse America and visit three distant and distinct dream destinations for any serious angler—and anyone who aspires to someday become one. Sullivan's marvelous debut illuminates the often profound nature of fishing as a vehicle that connects those who practice it with reverence to a world beyond the one humans created. As we travel along with Sullivan, he reveals what goes into the pursuit of select fish in the region with humor and personal stories as well as deep knowledge. Hawaii, Alaska and New England are some of the last frontiers of fishing in America. They are full of danger, big fish, and extraordinary adventure. To fish these places is to reach back and stand alongside the First Nations of fishermen—our ancestors who lived there for thousands of years before us—as well as those early Americans who built this country using species like cod as their currency. These cultural and fishing outposts will tell us something if we can just be quiet and listen. To hear that message requires an intrinsic respect for these ancient fishing grounds and our connection to them. This mindset is in lock-step with a growing movement of anglers who fish these wildest of waters as a way to turn down the noise of modern living and tune into their fundamental, hands-on relationship with the sea, finding not only the solace, but the sustenance the fish provides to those who take the time to learn its lessons. Plus, filling a freezer with the world’s healthiest protein just feels right. By turns funny, thrilling, and lyric, Fishing the Wild Waters celebrates the these special places where each fisherman can pull back the curtain, connect to the sea, and gaze into their own soul – the soul of a fisherman.
