Book Cavities and Waves from Explosions in Shallow Water

Download or read book Cavities and Waves from Explosions in Shallow Water written by A. R. Kriebel and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographic data for the cavities and surface waves generated by explosions in shallow water are described. The data were obtained in a slender wedge-shaped tank of water having one transparent sidewell. Ideally the tests would be equivalent to those for a 1-lb sphere of TNT exploded in a shallow test pond with a vertical axis of symmetry. The cavities and waves generated in the wedge tank did correspond roughly with such data, but there were differences in detail caused by the sidewalls of the wedge tank and the ceiling over it. The wedge tank data indicate that the horizontal radius of the expanded cavity is nearly independent of the water depth, even when the water depth is less than one-third the cavity radius. The wave trains are nearly independent of the water depth until the depth is less than three-fourths the cavity radius, after which the wave heights begin to decrease in proportion to the water depth. The cavities and waves were hardly affected when the hard bottom of the tank was replaced by sand, even when the water was shallow. A surf zone was created in the wedge-tank when the bottom was contoured, so that the waves shoaled. The measured wave trains corresponded reasonably well with those predicted by the theory of Kranzer and Keller for an initially motionless cavity. The calculated wave trains were based on the procedure developed by Whalin, on the measured cavity dimensions, and on two empirical factors. (Author).

Book Water Waves Generated by Underwater Explosion

Download or read book Water Waves Generated by Underwater Explosion written by Bernard Le Mehaute and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book on explosion-generated water waves. It presents the theoretical foundations and experimental results of the generation and propagation of impulsively generated waves resulting from underwater explosions. Many of the theories and concepts presented herein are applicable to other types of water waves, in particular, tsunamis and waves generated by the fall of a meteorite. Linear and nonlinear theories, as well as experimental calibrations, are presented for cases of deep and shallow water explosions. Propagation of transient waves on dissipative, nonuniform bathymetries together with laboratory simulations are analyzed and discussed.

Book Wave Generation from Explosions in Cavities in Rock

Download or read book Wave Generation from Explosions in Cavities in Rock written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have developed a measurement mehtod to monitor P- and S-waves generated from laboratory-scale explosions in meter-sized rock media at a series of stations, and invented a unique device to drill spherical cavities with diameters of up to 10 cm in rock. We have also conducted laboratory experiments in which spherical/cylindrical charges of 0.2 to 1.9 g mass were detonated at the center of spherical/cylindrical cavities with radii from 0.6 to 1.5 cm in Bedford limestone and the waves generated by the explosions were recorded in the near field within 250 mm. The reccords and post-explosion studies clearly demonstrate the P-waves generated from both explosions in cavities and crack propagation in rock. The peak particle displacement induced by P-waves ranges from 9 to 15 um at 150 to 210 mm from the source for the spherical cavity experiment with 1.9 g explosives, and 8 to 4 um at 150 to 220 mm from the source with 0.8 g explosives, 35 to 10 um at 150 to 240 mm for the tamped cylindrical cavity experiment with 1.2 g explosives and 7 to 2 um at 150 to 190 mm from the source for the decoupled cylindrical cavity experiment with 0.24 g explosives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydronamics of Explosion presents the research results for the problems of underwater explosions and contains a detailed analysis of the structure and the parameters of the wave fields generated by explosions of cord and spiral charges, a description of the formation mechanisms for a wide range of cumulative flows at underwater explosions near the free surface, and the relevant mathematical models. Shock-wave transformation in bubbly liquids, shock-wave amplification due to collision and focusing, and the formation of bubble detonation waves in reactive bubbly liquids are studied in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the investigation of wave processes in cavitating liquids, which incorporates the concepts of the strength of real liquids containing natural microinhomogeneities, the relaxation of tensile stress, and the cavitation fracture of a liquid as the inversion of its two-phase state under impulsive (explosive) loading. The problems are classed among essentially nonlinear processes that occur under shock loading of liquids and may be of interest to researchers in physical acoustics, mechanics of multiphase media, shock-wave processes in condensed media, explosive hydroacoustics, and cumulation.
