Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wave Propagation in a Plasma Based on the Cold Plasma Model The study of wave propagation originated decades ago with the examination of radio wave propagation in the ionosphere. Once the cold plasma conductivity tensor is developed, the problem reduces to a study of Maxwell's equations with the specified conductivity tensor. By far, the bulk of the work done in this field has been based on geometric optics or plane stratified medium approximations. Neither of these approximations is particularly valid in many typical laboratory plasma applications at moderately low frequencies and moderately long wavelengths. Additionally, the appearance of resonances and the associated plasma heating brings into question the relevance of the simple cold plasma model. Here, we intend to examine fairly generally the consequences of the cold plasma model for wave propagation problems. We intend to compare the situation in a plasma with the better known problems of scattering of waves in electromagnetic theory or in quantum mechanics. Our attack on this problem is based on an examination of the system of partial differential equations that defines the wave propagation problem. We will not be able to give definitive answers to many of the questions we raise, as the problems appear far beyond current knowledge. We will show that waves in plasmas behave, in many cases, quite unlike the much simpler version of waves in ordinary electromagnetic theory or in quantum mechanics. We believe that the questions we raise must be addressed directly to obtain reliable, quantitative measures of ion cyclotron or lower hybrid wave heating and model patterns in a plasma device. It places roughly equal emphasis on the radio and the . hydromagnetic parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. The dispersion properties of a magnetoplasma are treated as a function both of wave frequency (assumed real) and of ionization density. However, there is little discussion of propagation in a stratified medium, for of collisions is included only which reference may be made to Budden [1] . The effect in so far as this can be done with simplicity. The book describes how pulses are radiated from both small and large antennas embedded in a homogeneous magneto plasma. The power density radiated from a type of dipole antenna is studied as a function of direction of radiation in all bands of wave frequency. Input reactance is not treated, but the dependence of radiation resistance on wave frequency is described for the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Also described is the relation between beaming and guidance for Alfven waves.

The emphasis is on a thorough, but concise, treatment of the necessary theory and the use of this theory to understand the manifold varieties of waves which are observed by ground-based instruments and by satellites. We restrict our treatment to waves with wavelengths short compared with the spatial scales of the background plasma in the mag netosphere. By so doing we exclude large scale magnetohydrodynamic phenomena such as ULF pulsations in the Pc2-5 ranges. The field is an active one and we cannot hope to discuss every wave phenomenon ever observed in the magnetosphere! We try instead to give a good treatment of phenomena which are well understood, and which illustrate as many different parts of the theory as possible. It is thus hoped to put the reader in a position to understand the current literature. The treatment is aimed at a beginning graduate student in the field but it is hoped that it will also be of use as a reference to established workers. A knowledge of electromagnetic theory and some elementary plasma physics is assumed. The mathematical background required in cludes a knowledge of vector calculus, linear algebra, and Fourier trans form theory encountered in standard undergraduate physics curricula. A reasonable acquaintance with the theory of functions of a complex vari able including contour integration and the residue theorem is assumed.

Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical investigation of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in an anisotropic plasma along the direction of the applied static magnetic field was conducted. Experimental measurements of electron density and attenuation using circularly polarized waves (left-hand or right-hand) show good agreement with theory and with each other over all ranges of parameters. For the right-hand mode at radio frequencies above the electron cyclotron frequency, 'cut-off' occurs at much lower electron densities than in the absence of a magnetic field. For the left-hand wave, both the phase change and attenuation decrease with magnetic field and the wave is affected much less by the plasma than the right-hand wave over the range of parameters encountered in the experiments. The theory of propagation of a linearly polarized wave in a lossy anisotropic plasma was derived. Investigations of the collisional effects on e-m wave propagation in the region of the electron cyclotron frequency show a reversal in phase of the wave passing through the plasma as the electron density is increased. This phenomenon occurs only for the right-hand circularly polarized wave at frequencies very near but just above the electron cyclotron frequency. Collisional effects based on cold plasma theory can account for this behavior.
