Book Wave Force Phase Method for Vertical Cylinders

Download or read book Wave Force Phase Method for Vertical Cylinders written by John H. Nath and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maximum force and its phase is determined for laboratory wave forces on smooth vertical cylinders. The maximum force coefficient, and the normalized phase angle, of the force with respect to the wave particle velocity, can be related to the force transfer coefficients, C subscript d and c subscript m, for the Morison equation. This method enables the data to be plotted in a way that immediately shows the drag or inertia dependency for the wave/cylinder conditions. In addition, the C subscript d and C subscript m so derived are more likely to properly predict the maximum value of the force, although they may also increase the rms error between the measured force and the predicted force in the time domain.

Book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water

Download or read book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water written by E. R. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special case of horizontal wave forces on large vertical cylinders in deep water is considered. The typical application for such a case is the calculation of horizontal forces on column-stabilized floating ocean platforms. Existing literature discussing horizontal wave forces on cylinders does not generally agree on how to predict these forces. Since for large-diameter cylinders in deep water the maximum force is completely inertial, the problem of deriving a solution is considerably simplified. In this study, an expression for the maximum horizontal wave force on large-diameter circular cylinders mounted vertically in deep water has been analytically derived. Experimental model studies were also conducted and the resulting measured forces are compared to predicted forces. An example of how to predict horizontal wave forces using the methods of the report is given. (Author).

Book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Book Breaking wave load of a vertical slender cylinder within a cylinder group

Download or read book Breaking wave load of a vertical slender cylinder within a cylinder group written by Jeanette Juilfs and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2006-10-02 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject Engineering - Civil Engineering, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Braunschweig (Leichtweiss-Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources, Department of Coastal Engineering), language: English, abstract: Slender cylinders are widely used as a structural element in offshore structures. Oil platforms, jetties and piers are often supported by group of cylinders, which are arranged closely spaced. The Morison equation (Morison et al., 1950) constitutes a simple tool to calculate the wave force on one single cylinder. To what extent the cylinders, which are arranged in a group, affect each other is extensively unclear. As these group interference effects are not considered in the Morison equation there is a lack of a generally accepted formula to calculate the individual forces on cylinders within cylinder groups. In this student research project the special loading case of breaking waves acting on cylinder groups is examined. Breaking waves developed from wave superposition during a storm may cause great impact loads also in deep water. The investigation of breaking waves leads to the upper bound of possible loads on offshore structures. A closer analysis of the so called impact force and the validation of former assumptions of considering it is not part of this paper. The main focus lies on the interactions between cylinders arranged in groups when a single breaking wave impinges the group or a part of it. These interactions are investigated based on large-scale experiments, which have been performed in summer 2004 in the Large Wave Flume (GWK) at the Coastal Research Centre (FZK) in Hanover. Fifteen configurations of cylinder groups have been examined, including one configuration with one single cylinder and fourteen configurations of groups up to three cylinders arranged in row or transversely. The single cylinder and one cylinder in each cylinder group are equipped with strain gauges on the top, which measure the bending moments during the tests. These measuring cylinders, in the single arrangement and in the group arrangements, have the same position in the wave flume. Therefore the comparison of the measured bending moments of the single cylinder with those of the cylinder in the group provides information about the influence of the adjacent elements in a cylinder group. The results of the single cylinder test can be taken as a reference for the results of the cylinder group’s tests.

Book Coastal Engineering Waves Beaches Wave Structure Interactions

Download or read book Coastal Engineering Waves Beaches Wave Structure Interactions written by T. Sawaragi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-04-11 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science and technology of coastal and ocean engineering are closely related to harbour and fishery engineering, because they share a common basic knowledge. However, whereas various publications of coastal engineering, harbour engineering, and ocean engineering have described just the knowledge in their own respective fields, an interrelated and systematic presentation linking them together has yet to be attempted. This book is the first attempt to systematically combine the fields of coastal, ocean, harbour, and fishery engineering from an engineering viewpoint backed by hydrodynamics. Understanding the interaction of waves with structures and sediment, and predicting the associated responses of interest, underlie nearly every problem in coastal and ocean engineering. This is precisely the goal of this book. Although primarily intended for use as a special textbook for graduate students and senior practising engineers, it is hoped that this book will also serve as a useful reference and assist in the further development of this field. With these objectives in mind, each chapter deals with important problems to be solved in the near future. The references included in each chapter should aid students and practising engineers in further broadening their knowledge. This book is the English translation of the original Japanese version published in May, 1991, commemorating the author's retirement from Osaka University. ``Elsevier will be named copyright holder of the English translated publication of the Work.
