Download or read book Seismic Exploration Methods written by Ray L. Sengbush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the seismic methods used in geophys ical exploration for oil and gas in a comprehensive, non rigorous, mathematical manner. I have used it and its predecessors as a manual for short courses in seismic methods, and it has been extensively revised time and again to include the latest advances in our truly remark able science. I once called it, "Advanced Seismic Inter pretation," but the geophysicists who attended the courses always wondered when I was going to start dis cussing interpretation. They discovered at the end that I never did discuss interpretation as they knew it. No men tion was made of reflection picking, posting times, map ping, contouring, and things they already knew perfectly well. Instead, I discussed Fourier transforms, sampling theory, impulse responses, distortion operators, Wiener filters, noise in f-k space, velocity spectra, wave-equation migration, and direct detection of hydrocarbons as each of these topics appeared on the seismic scene. I wanted the geophysicists to think beyond the routine ofinterpre tation, to develop a better understanding of why seismic sections look as they do, to have a better feel for what digital processing is doing, for good or evil, to the seismic data. I attempted to stretch their minds. Whitehead said it best: "A mind once stretched by a new idea can never shrink to its former dimension. " May this book be a suc cessful mind-stretcher. R. L.

Book Seismic Inversion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerard T. Schuster
  • Publisher : SEG Books
  • Release : 2017-07-01
  • ISBN : 156080341X
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Seismic Inversion written by Gerard T. Schuster and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the theory and practice of inverting seismic data for the subsurface rock properties of the earth. The primary application is for inverting reflection and/or transmission data from engineering or exploration surveys, but the methods described also can be used for earthquake studies. Seismic Inversion will be of benefit to scientists and advanced students in engineering, earth sciences, and physics. It is desirable that the reader has some familiarity with certain aspects of numerical computation, such as finite-difference solutions to partial differential equations, numerical linear algebra, and the basic physics of wave propagation. For those not familiar with the terminology and methods of seismic exploration, a brief introduction is provided. To truly understand the nuances of seismic inversion, we have to actively practice what we preach (or teach). Therefore, computational labs are provided for most of the chapters, and some field data labs are given as well.

Book Full Seismic Waveform Modelling and Inversion

Download or read book Full Seismic Waveform Modelling and Inversion written by Andreas Fichtner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent progress in numerical methods and computer science allows us today to simulate the propagation of seismic waves through realistically heterogeneous Earth models with unprecedented accuracy. Full waveform tomography is a tomographic technique that takes advantage of numerical solutions of the elastic wave equation. The accuracy of the numerical solutions and the exploitation of complete waveform information result in tomographic images that are both more realistic and better resolved. This book develops and describes state of the art methodologies covering all aspects of full waveform tomography including methods for the numerical solution of the elastic wave equation, the adjoint method, the design of objective functionals and optimisation schemes. It provides a variety of case studies on all scales from local to global based on a large number of examples involving real data. It is a comprehensive reference on full waveform tomography for advanced students, researchers and professionals.

Download or read book A Practical Understanding of Pre and Poststack Migrations Prestack written by John C. Bancroft and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is designed to give the practicing geophysicist an understanding of the principles of prestack migration, presented with intuitive reasoning that avoids difficult math. Modeling with common-shot record and a constant-offset section are used to introduce prestack migration. New material in this revised edition of the original 1998 book includes algorithms that lead to and include Claerbout's inversion method.

Book A Practical Understanding of Pre and Poststack Migrations Poststack

Download or read book A Practical Understanding of Pre and Poststack Migrations Poststack written by John C. Bancroft and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is designed to give the practicing geophysicist an understanding of the principles of poststack migration, presented with intuitive reasoning rather than laborious math. Modeling is introduced as a natural process that starts with a geologic model and then builds seismic data. Migration is then described as the reverse process that uses seismic data to find the geologic model. Many other topics are covered relating to the quality of the migrated section, such as aliasing, rugged topography, or use of the correct velocity. Significant new material has been added in this revised edition of the original 1997 book, especially algorithms based on the phase-shift method, such as PSPI and the omegaX method.

Book Theory of Seismic Diffractions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a complete mathematical description of diffractions caused by seismic velocity discontinuities. Diffraction theory provides important physical insights into seismology and is a necessary part of describing the nature of a seismogram. The author describes elastic wave theory and relates it to the high-frequency approximations of ray theory.
