Book Mitigating Land Degradation and Improving Livelihoods

Download or read book Mitigating Land Degradation and Improving Livelihoods written by Feras Ziadat and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research presented in this book demonstrates how an integrated ‘systems’ approach to farming in the watershed context increases the effectiveness of a production system and improves people’s livelihoods. It takes an integrated approach, using one watershed in Ethiopia as a ‘laboratory’ or model case study to focus on the interaction and interdependence between land, water, crops, soil, water harvesting, supplemental irrigation, forestry, socio-economic aspects, livestock and farm tools. A range of linked studies was conducted with active participation of the farming community and other relevant stakeholders, such as the local offices of agriculture and extension services. The starting point for the work was the premise that previous efforts to solve farming system constraints using a piecemeal approach or discipline-specific focus have not been successful. Thus, addressing agricultural and environmental constraints through a holistic approach enables the generation of comprehensive technologies to sustainably improve the natural resource base and livelihoods of communities. The authors discuss trade-offs and resource allocation, demonstrating how the environment can be protected while also improving productivity. A unique feature is the methodology developed for the selection of suitable fields and farmers to implement new approaches or improved technologies, to achieve production increases while reducing degradation of sensitive agro-ecosystems. It is also shown how the watershed scale is a valuable basis for assessing the protection of fragile lands.

Book Watershed Management for Livelihoods

Download or read book Watershed Management for Livelihoods written by Ram Singh Thapa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reports how the livelihoods of people particularly in rural area of Nepal depends on natural resources. The study shows the contribution of watershed management; which is management of complex elements(Water, Land, Forest, and People itself) to sustain their livelihoods. The farming system heavily depends on natural resources. Increase in population and its dependency on land resources has resulted on the degradation of watersheds. Government of Nepal has been implementing various watershed management programs to address the issues. Poverty reduction is worthless without considering the sustainable management of land resources, as the majority of the people depend on these resources. Peoples' participation is must for sustainable watershed management. Author has explored different aspects of watershed management and tried to find out the contribution of watershed management program to the livelihoods of local people considering sustainable livelihood framework by identifying the criteria and indicators of watershed management activities. The work is quite beneficial to researchers, students, practitioners and policy makers involved in NRM.

Unfortunately the Limpopo is water scarce, and parts of the basin, such as Zimbabwe's Mzingwane catchment, are under stress in terms of agro-ecological and socio-politicoeconomic conditions. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has been adopted in the river basin i

Book Water Scarcity Livelihoods and Food Security

Download or read book Water Scarcity Livelihoods and Food Security written by Larry W. Harrington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reviews the evolution of ten years’ learning and discovery about water scarcity, livelihoods, and food security within the CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food. It draws on the experiences of over 100 projects conducted in ten river basins in the developing world. The book describes how the program’s design evolved from an emphasis on water scarcity, water productivity, and water access to an emphasis on using water innovations to improve livelihoods and address development challenges in specific river basins. It shows how the research was used to foster change in stakeholder behavior, linking it to improved knowledge, attitudes, and skills, which were fostered by stakeholder participation, innovation, dialogue, and negotiation. The authors describe development challenges, their drivers and their political context, how to address them through technical, institutional, and policy innovations; and the consequences of change at different scales, time frames on equity, resilience, and ecosystem services. Overall, the work represents a major synthesis and landmark publication for all concerned with water resource management and sustainable development.

Book Integrated Watershed Management Through Simulation Modelling

Download or read book Integrated Watershed Management Through Simulation Modelling written by Pradeep P. Lodha and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a watershed based sustainable livelihoods framework which analyses the livelihoods of watershed community, evaluates watershed interventions and establishes linkages between livelihoods and hydrological components. A methodology is proposed for quantification of the socio-economic aspects, which is found effective in measuring the impacts of watershed program on local community. The SWAT hydrological model with ArcView GIS interface has been used to simulate various watershed interventions for water and sediment yields. Statistical analysis like factor and regression modelling is used to establish linkages between livelihoods and hydrological components. The GIS has played an important role in database creation, data processing and analysis. The methodology is employed on three watersheds namely Dudhi micro-watershed, Bewas micro-watershed and Dudhi milli-watershed which fall in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh State in India. The students and practitioners in the area of water resources, hydrology, environment, agriculture, irrigation, rural management and developmental studies will find this book interesting for their academic curricula and research projects.

Book Integrated Watershed Management

Download or read book Integrated Watershed Management written by Quincy Garey and published by . This book was released on 2020-10 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, watersheds have been viewed as hydrological units to conserve soil and water, and a compartmental approach has been adopted. However, through the integrated watershed management approach, all-natural resources in the watershed are managed efficiently and effectively so that the rural livelihoods can be improved substantially through the convergence of various activities. This book is intended to cover technologies, information, and knowledge that would help to address critical physical, biological, and socioeconomic problems of natural resources and provides a mechanism for their sustainable management and utilization. Both internal and external factors of the physical environment, policy, economic, socio-cultural, and technological dimensions are also elaborated. This book provides readers with an opportunity to learn a flexible, integrated framework for watershed management that addresses the biophysical, social, and economic issues affecting water resources and their use. Thus, this book is intended to assess watershed characteristics that will help to explore the possibilities of reducing sedimentation and its related effects.

Book Natural Resources Management and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Mountainous Region

Download or read book Natural Resources Management and Sustainable Livelihoods in the Mountainous Region written by Praveen Kumar Rai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-08-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationships between natural resources management, sustainable livelihoods, and integrated watershed management in the context of the mountainous region, especially in the northeastern region of India. The book also sheds light on the current state of regional issues, identifies gaps in the existing practices and proposes future policies for effective conservation and sustainable development. The environmental degradation in the northeastern region of India is basically attributed to the increasing biotic pressure on the fragile ecosystems in the absence of suitable investments and proper management practices to enhance and conserve the natural resources. Population growth and poverty on the one hand and the pressure of rising demand from wealth and consumerism on the other hand, have been exerting powerful pressure on the ecosystems. Natural resources planning and management and sustainable livelihoods through integrated watershed management is not just a technical challenge; it is also a social challenge. The book is a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, practitioners and stakeholders involved in natural resource management, sustainable development and watershed management in the Himalayan region.
