Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “miraculous” (Newsweek) human drama, based on a true story, from the renowned author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw Island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence unless, somehow, they can learn a new way. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher—until one man gives a year of his life to the island and its people. Praise for The Water Is Wide “Miraculous . . . an experience of joy.”—Newsweek “A powerfully moving book . . . You will laugh, you will weep, you will be proud and you will rail . . . and you will learn to love the man.”—Charleston News and Courier “A hell of a good story.”—The New York Times “Few novelists write as well, and none as beautifully.”—Lexington Herald-Leader “[Pat] Conroy cuts through his experiences with a sharp edge of irony. . . . He brings emotion, writing talent and anger to his story.”—Baltimore Sun

Book Let There Be Water

    Book Details:
  • Author : Seth M. Siegel
  • Publisher : Macmillan
  • Release : 2015-09-15
  • ISBN : 1466885440
  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Let There Be Water written by Seth M. Siegel and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times and Los Angeles Times Bestseller! As every day brings urgent reports of growing water shortages around the world, there is no time to lose in the search for solutions. The U.S. government predicts that forty of our fifty states-and 60 percent of the earth's land surface-will soon face alarming gaps between available water and the growing demand for it. Without action, food prices will rise, economic growth will slow, and political instability is likely to follow. Let There Be Water illustrates how Israel can serve as a model for the United States and countries everywhere by showing how to blunt the worst of the coming water calamities. Even with 60 percent of its country made of desert, Israel has not only solved its water problem; it also had an abundance of water. Israel even supplies water to its neighbors-the Palestinians and the Kingdom of Jordan-every day. Based on meticulous research and hundreds of interviews, Let There Be Water reveals the methods and techniques of the often offbeat inventors who enabled Israel to lead the world in cutting-edge water technology. Let There Be Water also tells unknown stories of how cooperation on water systems can forge diplomatic ties and promote unity. Remarkably, not long ago, now-hostile Iran relied on Israel to manage its water systems, and access to Israel's water know-how helped to warm China's frosty relations with Israel. Beautifully written, Seth M. Siegel's Let There Be Water is and inspiring account of the vision and sacrifice by a nation and people that have long made water security a top priority. Despite scant natural water resources, a rapidly growing population and economy, and often hostile neighbors, Israel has consistently jumped ahead of the water innovation-curve to assure a dynamic, vital future for itself. Every town, every country, and every reader can benefit from learning what Israel did to overcome daunting challenges and transform itself from a parched land into a water superpower.

Book excerpt: An A. F. -320 model aircraft of America was crossing the Atlantic Ocean 18000 feet above the sea level, carrying 156 passengers. The aircraft was still flying across the Atlantic Ocean. Suddenly, a sort of peculiar light rays touched the aircraft. The plane shook horribly. it went out the pilot's control and darted towards an unknown destination. The horror-stricken passengers screamed loudly. The pilot managed to contact the American Airlines Office and inform them about the strange occurrences. The news of the plane going out of control caused a general panic among the officials in the terminal. Suddenly, the line of communication between the terminal and the aircraft cut off. Nixon screamed when he beheld that incredible sight. "My God, What is it?" the other passengers followed his gaze and saw the gigantic hear and long neck of a monstrous creature that was approaching the plane. They were horrified to death. There were plenty of horns The plane stood still in the air as if it was feathered to an unseen nail. The roof of the plane melted in the powerful rays which originated from the horns of the monster. The passengers screamed, seeing the cave sized mouth of the devilish creature aiming at them. The next moment, the monster caught some of the passengers in its mouth and swallowed them. One of the passengers gathered his guts and started firing at it. The effect was totally unanticipated. All the bullets from the revolver got caught in the fatal light rays and vanished into thin air. A middle aged man jumped out of the plane in fright. Suddenly the monster extended one of its horns and caught him. It roared horrible. The aircraft, its passengers and the sky itself shook, hearing the blood chilling roar of the monster. The plane moved in a circle as if it was caught in a whirlpool. The monster caught the panic stricken middle aged man in its mouth. The other passengers screamed in horror, hearing his bones being crunched and ground. Will any of them escape from that devilish monster? Who will save them? Will anyone succeed in killing the scary creature?

Millions are drawn every year to the stunning beauty of this rocky landscape of spruce-fir forest and granite islands. Some, like nature writer Christopher Camuto, never stop coming back. In Time and Tide in Acadia the author draws on years of walking Mount Desert’s summits and shorelines, canoeing its marshes, kayaking its tidal waters, and visiting its outer islands. To this task Camuto brings an appetite for observing wildlife and landscape with considerable originality, a regard for history and indigenous perceptions of nature, a keen interest in exploring the psychological and philosophical appeal of nature, and a writer’s love of language. As in his previous, highly praised books, Camuto fulfills his promise to give the reader innumerable vantages on the nature of a remarkable place that it takes time to get to know.
