Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification and Sewage Disposal Since the recognition of their significance in the promotion of the public health, methods of water purification and sewage disposal have earned a steadily increasing importance. Consequently, these branches of industry have enjoyed the most zealous atten tion of the scientist and of the engineer. I have endeavoured in the present monograph to give a survey, short perhaps, but as complete as possible, of the present position in regard to Water Purification and Sewage Disposal. Owing to the wide range of this subject particular processes could only be treated shortly in the space at disposal. One chapter, which is very fully treated in the present volume, though slightly elsewhere, is the disposal of industrial sewage. Many of the processes of purification are of quite recent date, and fresh experience is being obtained daily and reported upon in the most diverse publications. I have endeavoured to collect such information. In the translation some small changes and additions have been made in the chapters on sand filtration, the removal of manganese, and Travis and Emscher wells. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage and the Bacterial: Purification of Sewage For houses in isolated positions the cesspool till lately was the only available means of sewage disposal, and architects and others spent considerable time and skill Upon its design in the early Victorian period, when sanitary progress first drew atten tion to its importance. I give the following as an example of its successful use, which is interesting on account of its being antecedent both to the French automatic scavenger, to be described in a subsequent chapter, and to the modern septic tank In 1858 a large school in Derbyshire, situate on the top of a lofty hill, surrounded by its own land, but at a distance of two miles from a small river which ran through other property. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Having had occasion in my own practice to in vestigate the information which of recent years has become available to engineers, through the researches of chemists and biologists, in relation to Water Supply, Sewerage and Sewage Disposal, I have thought that a concise summary of the most important data would be useful. I have confined this book as far as possible within the limits of data in connection with works of Sewerage and Sewage Disposal, although in dealing with River Pollution and Filtration of Impure Water, the allied subjects of Water Pollution and Sewage Purification necessarily overlap. In fact, the functions of micro-organisms, which affect the consideration of both, must be well understood by engineers who have to advise in. Book Sewage Treatment Purification and Utilization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewage Treatment Purification and Utilization Classic Reprint written by J. W. Slater and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Treatment, Purification, and Utilization The importance of the Sewage question may, perhaps, be fairly gauged by the number of patents of which it has been the subject, and its still unsettled state may be concluded from their varied and contradictory character. Freezing and heating, concentration and dilution, electrisation and magnetising, the addition of oxidisers and deoxidisers, of ferments and preventives of fermentation recommended, if not actually tried, show the want of any distinct and generally recognised principle. I have, therefore, thought it my duty to lay before the public in plain language and in a concise form the result of my experience in treating sewage and waste waters. That experience dates back to the year 1868, and except in 1870 my attention has during the whole of that time been almost exclusively directed to this question. I have worked with sewage in every quantity, from a few ounces in a beaker or a hydrometer-jar to a daily flow of ten million gallons. I have had opportunities for examining almost every known process, irrigation, filtration, aeration as well as precipitation in its many variations. Book Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewage Disposal Classic Reprint written by George A. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal There appears to be no room for doubt but that the treatment of sewage on intermittent sand filters will, in the vast majority of instances, yield the highest degree of purification of all the known methods of sewage treatment. In England the natural soil is not uniformly favor able to this form of treatment, and except in the northern and eastern sections, the same is true in this country. It has become necessary, therefore, to pay particular attention to the perfection of numerous forms of preparatory treatment, whereby higher rates are made possible in the case of intermittent sand filtration, and other subsidiary processes, there by reducing the cost of the plant by reducing the acreage required. It has also become necessary to study more carefully the applicability of certain of the more recently devised methods of sewage treatment, where in coarse-grain material, Such as is locally available, can be made use of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design, Construction and Maintenance of Sewage Disposal Works: Being a Practical Guide to Modern Methods of Sewage Purification Sewage disposal works comprise all the artificial means employed for facilitating the purification of sewage; and although such Works may be designed for the applica tion of many different mechanical, chemical, and biological processes, the ultimate aim and object of them all is to separate the organic matters contained in the sewage from the water in which they are dissolved or suspended, and to render them innocuous by decomposition and oxidation, while at the same time restoring the water itself to a state of Comparative purity, so that. It may not injuriously affect any stream, river, or tidal estuary through which it may pass on its way back to the sea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanitation of Cities But it is only in recent years that serious efforts have been made toward correlating these activi ties, thereby obtaining not only a more economi cal plan in the outlay of public funds, but also a much higher efficiency. It is self-evident that street layouts should be related not only to the needs of traffic and the marketing of real property, but also with regard to the most efficient and economical design for the public utilities, such as water supply, surface drainage and sewers. It is no less evident that the needs of water purification and methods to be em ployed should be considered in relation to sewage treatment and disposal - and that garbage dis posal and sewage disposal should be considered together. There are many other questions that are related and should be given consideration at the same time, even if not intended to be pro vided for together, so that when provided for they may fit in as harmonious parts of a well planned municipal unit; and the construction of the parts may be carried on progressively, al ways aiming at a future result by practical means, within the reasonable capacity and resources of the city. Book Water Purification Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Purification Classic Reprint written by Joseph W. Ellms and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Purification In the following pages it is intended to treat only of the first division of this subject, since the second covers too broad a field to bring it Within the mom of this volume. Both the kind and the amount of impurities in a polluted water affect the methods which can be employed for its purification, and this is so peculiarly true of sewage that its treatment has become an art in itself. Those waters which are to be purified for drinking purposes demand that a degree Of purity shall be produced which is not possible and usually unnecessary in the case Of sewage. The purification of the latter is, as a rule, quite incomplete as compared with that required for a safe drinking water, and obviously the Object to be attained is quite difl'erent. In the case of waters to be treated for making them suitable for steam-boiler purposes, or for general industrial uses, a slightly different Object is sought. The softening of hard waters or the removal of compounds of iron or manganese may be an integral part of the purification of a public drinking water supply, in which case it is combined with those processes utilized for making a water hygienically safe. Of course it is quite possible to carry on purification for industrial purposes independently of the more refined methods used for drinking water, and frequently this course is pursued in connection with manufacturing plants. Book Sewage Disposal in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sewage Disposal in the United States Classic Reprint written by Geo W. Rafter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sewage Disposal in the United States Questions of River Pollution and Sewage Disposal have assumed so much importance in this country that no excuse is necessary for putting forth an American treatise on the subject. The chief object, therefore, of this book is to specifically call the attention of sanitary authorities, engineers, and others interested in questions of public sanitation, to the fact that we have already accumulated a considerable stock of experience in sewage disposal in this country, and that for the future Americans, who wish to study the subject in detail, will not be obliged, as until recently was the case, to go abroad for the purpose. In making this remark we do not wish to be understood as discouraging the study of foreign precedents in sewage disposal; on the contrary, it is cheerfully conceded, inasmuch as the necessity for sewage purification first arose abroad, that consequently the foreign engineers had the opportunity to attack the problem first, and we may very properly profit by their experience. The full idea is that the conditions here are generally quite dissimilar from those obtaining abroad, and that, with most of the feasible methods of sewage purification now in successful operation, the chances are decidedly in favor of quite as much profit from studying carefully the results obtained here as can be expected from the casual examination of executed projects abroad, which, after all, are for the most part only relatively applicable. The experience at Worcester, Massachusetts, is a striking exemplification of the truth that in the end the American engineer must design works to suit his specific case. In the preliminary discussion at Worcester it was nearly universally assumed that, by reason of an identity of climatic conditions between Worcester and Danzig, the sewage irrigation fields of the latter city might be duplicated at Worcester, and results obtained quite as successful as those attending sewage farming at Danzig. Rut Mr. Allen took the ground that the climatic conditions were sufficiently dissimilar to render an extensive sewage farm at Worcester an experiment, relative to which it was impossible to predicate success from what had occurred at Danzig.
