Book Full Scale Tests of Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems for Navy Shipboard Machinery Spaces Part 2 Obstructed Spaces

Download or read book Full Scale Tests of Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems for Navy Shipboard Machinery Spaces Part 2 Obstructed Spaces written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phase II tests were conducted in a simulated machinery space on the Navy's fire test ship, the ex-USS Shadwell. It was the same space as used in the Phase I tests except that it was fitted with mockups of equipment to farther evaluate the firefighting capabilities of the water mist system in a more realistic machinery space environment. The fire threats were a combination of spray and pan fires in the range of 2.5 to 7.5 MW. Five different types of spray nozzles were evaluated. Initially, the nozzles were installed in the overhead at one level as in the Phase I study. Then, to improve the performance of the system, the nozzles were installed on two levels as is the practice with Halon systems. With the best system, all of the fires were extinguished in less than 25 seconds, using less than lOO% (25 gallons) of water.

Book Ship Fire Prevention

Download or read book Ship Fire Prevention written by A. J. S. Bennett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ship Fire Prevention provides an introduction to fire prevention methods in ships. This book discusses the standard methods to extinguish combustion. Organized into two parts encompassing eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various types of fire-fighting equipment. This text then describes single purpose and dual purpose pumps and describes the measurements that are useful in the study of fire prevention. Other chapters consider the effect of the weight in altering the position of the center of gravity as well as the adverse effect of water on the stability of the ship. This book discusses as well the more specialized techniques dealing with the prevention of explosions, which includes the prevention of accidental high energy sparks and the avoidance of conditions favorable to explosions. The final chapter deals with preventive and safety measures to consider. This book is a valuable resource for seafarers and seagoing marine engineers.

Book Full Scale Tests of Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems for Navy Shipboard Machinery Spaces Phase 1 Unobstructed Spaces

Download or read book Full Scale Tests of Water Mist Fire Suppression Systems for Navy Shipboard Machinery Spaces Phase 1 Unobstructed Spaces written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Full scale tests of candidate water mist systems were conducted in a simulated machinery space on the ex-USS Shadwell. There were no obstructions in the space and the fire threats were both pan and spray fires of up to 10 MW. These tests demonstrated the potential ability of water mist to extinguish both shielded and unshielded Class B fires in full scale, relatively uncluttered machinery space applications. Of particular importance from the standpoint of minimization of damage is the rapid reduction in the temperature of the space almost immediately after mist system activation. These tests also demonstrate the differences in firefighting capabilities of the candidate systems tested. While these results are extremely encouraging, modifications to the systems will be needed to shorten the extinguishment times and minimize potential fire damage. These modifications will be included in the Phase II tests.

Book A Review of Water Mist Technology for Fire Suppression

Download or read book A Review of Water Mist Technology for Fire Suppression written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential efficacy of water mist fire suppression systems has been demonstrated in a wide range of applications and by numerous experimental programs. These applications have included Class B spray and pool fires, aircraft cabins, shipboard machinery and engine room spaces, shipboard accommodation spaces, and computer and electronics applications. To summarize these experimental efforts, the efficacy of a particular water mist system is strongly dependent on the ability to not only generate sufficiently small droplet sizes but also distribute sufficient mist concentrations throughout the compartment. A widely accepted critical concentration of water droplets required to extinguish a fire is yet to be determined. Factors that contribute to the success or failure of a water mist system for a particular application include droplet size, velocity, the spray pattern geometry as well as the momentum and mixing characteristics of the spray jet, and the geometry and other characteristics of the protected area. At this time, the effect of these factors on system effectiveness is not well known. This will necessitate evaluation of water mist in context of a specific system for unique applications for the reasonable future unless breakthroughs in understanding of mist distribution and flame interaction occur through research.
