It is the environmental challenge that forms a leading theme for the conference, and the themes of quality assurance and quality control support this aspect. Of no less importance is control of land contamination and how we propose to model for the long term impact of our aims. Book excerpt: The extraction of apatite minerals is becoming more and more crucial with the depletion of high-grade ores. At the same time, many streams of waste are continuously being produced by the phosphate industry, including calcareous and siliceous waste rocks, clayey sludge and phosphogypsum. These waste products are produced in huge volumes reaching a ratio of between 5 to 10 tons of waste per each ton of concentrated phosphate. The management of these waste products is becoming a real issue in terms of growing public awareness and environmental and financial aspects. In addition, phosphate ores are known to contain other critical raw materials (CRM) such as rare earth elements and uranium. The recovery of these vital elements from phosphate waste may help to develop the needs of the green energy of the future and contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. In this Special Issue, insights related to the following aspects were studied: phosphate extraction and beneficiation, novel phosphate ores, the fine characterization of phosphate ores and waste, phosphoric acid production, critical raw material (CRM) recovery from phosphate ores and waste, reprocessing of phosphate wastes and finally the valorization and reuse of phosphate waste and phosphogypsum.

Book excerpt: This project was conducted to assist in predicting the effects of freeze-thaw cycling on stabilized hazardous waste material during the 1996-97 freezing season. The Raymark Superfund site in Stratford, Connecticut, is under remediation with the intent of using the area for commercial development. The site was classified as a Superfund site in 1995. The on-site soil contains asbestos, lead, PCBs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), semi-VOCs, and solvents. These contaminants are by-products of the manufacturing process for heat-resistant automotive parts. The stabilized waste material is being used as the subgrade material in the pavement structure. Field testing was conducted to determine the unconfined compressive strength of the stabilized material before and after the freezing season. Testing was completed using the Clegg impact soil tester and dynamic cone penetrometer. Additionally, thermocouples were installed to estimate the depth of frost penetration that could be expected, and to ensure that the overlying layers in the pavement structure would be adequate to prevent frost penetration into the stabilized layer.

There has been a great deal of laboratory testing carried out in several countries on the impact of waste-derived products on the environment since most of these products are used in close contact with the soil ( eg. road construction). There is however, no consensus as to the methodologies possible for assessing the environmental behaviour of waste residue and the consequences of using them nor for developing standards to ensure environmentally safe re-use. The first half of the conference addresses this problem of lack of consensus. The second half deals with technical solutions and procedures to use waste materials for the production of construction materials.
