Book Transportation Library Connectivity Pooled Fund Study TPF 5 105

Download or read book Transportation Library Connectivity Pooled Fund Study TPF 5 105 written by Maggie Sacco and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a record of the formation, major activities and accomplishments of the Transportation Library Connectivity pooled fund study, TPF-5(105), from its approval by FHWA in 2005 through its fifth and final annual meeting in September 2010. Some 50 state departments of transportation, 600 transit agencies and nearly 400 metropolitan planning organizations generate a staggering amount of valuable information, yet the transportation sector lacks a systematic approach to effectively manage this information. This challenge has been well-documented in reports such as the Federal Highway Administration's Value of Information and Information Services; the National Cooperative Highway Research Program's Scoping Study for a National Strategic Plan for Transportation Information Management; and the Transportation Research Board's Special Report 284, Transportation Knowledge Networks: A Management Strategy for the 21st Century. The Transportation Library Connectivity pooled fund study was formed against the backdrop of these challenges and developments. By working together more closely and more formally as transportation agency libraries, members improved services to their customers and also enhanced their readiness to embrace the planned policy changes recommended by TRB SR 284 for inclusion in the next surface transportation funding act. During its five years, study membership grew from 11 members in nine states to 25 members in 22 states. A new pooled fund study, to be led by Missouri DOT, is being formed to build upon the achievements of this study.

Book Using and Curating Archaeological Collections

Download or read book Using and Curating Archaeological Collections written by Mark S. Warner and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All archaeologists have responsibilities to support the collections they produce, yet budgeting for and managing collections over the length of a project and beyond is not part of most archaeologists training. While this book in the SAA Press Archaeology in Action Series highlights major challenges that archaeologists and curators face with regard to collections, it also stresses the values, uses, and benefits of collections. It also demonstrates the continued significance of archaeological collections to the profession, tribes, and the public and provides critical resources for archaeologists to carry out their responsibilities. Many lament that the archaeological record is finite and disappearing. In this context, collections are even more important to preserve for future use, and this book will help all stakeholders do so.

Book Road to Rainier Scenic Byway

Download or read book Road to Rainier Scenic Byway written by Donald M. Johnstone and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Road to Rainier Scenic Byway has grown from a Native American forest trail, hundreds of years old, to a modern forest highway carrying 1.5 million travelers a year. In 1833, a European tourist first reached a glacier, and soon others followed, seeking the wonders of Mount Rainier. In 1903, the railroad reached Eatonville; and national park visitors, who started as a few thousand, became tens of thousands. With a market for timber, hundreds rushed to claim the lands. Forestry and tourism both thrived off the rich natural resources, and as the region developed, purely commercial ventures were supplemented with educational outreach. Charles L. Pack Experimental Forest, established in 1926, conducts scientific research into forest management and sustainability. Historical interpretation has become a function of the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad and Logging Museum. The Road to Rainier Scenic Byway continues to serve all as it heads to scenic Mount Rainier.

Book Sail Steam and Diesel

Download or read book Sail Steam and Diesel written by Eric Hirsimaki and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2024-04-01 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water transportation has played a key role in the Great Lakes region’s settlement and economic growth, from providing entry into the new lake states to offering cheap transportation for the goods they produced. There are numerous tales surrounding the Great Lakes shipping trade, but few storytellers have addressed the factors that influenced the use, design, and evolution of the ships that sailed the inland seas. Sail, Steam, and Diesel: Moving Cargo on the Great Lakes provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Great Lakes ships over the centuries, from small birch-bark canoes originally used in the region to the massive thousand-footers of today. The author also looks at the economics of vessel operation in the context of the expanding scope of the shipping industry, which was crucial in catapulting America into becoming an industrial juggernaut. The captains of industry and the sailors whose labor propelled the trade populate this account, which also offers solemn acknowledgment of the high cost paid in both lost ships and lives. Although they might not realize it, millions of Americans have owed their livelihoods to the Great Lakes boats, and this volume is an excellent way to recognize the importance of this regional industry.

  • Pages : 576 pages

Download or read book Oceanographic History written by Keith Rodney Benson and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a study of knowledge of the sea among indigenous cultures in the South Seas to inquiries into the subject of sea monsters, from studies of Pacific currents to descriptions of ocean-going research vessels, the sixty-three essays presented here reflect the scientific complexity and richness of social relationships that characterize ocean-ographic history. Based on papers presented at the Fifth International Congress on the History of Oceanography held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (the first ICHO meeting following the cessation of the Cold War), the volume features an unusual breadth of contributions. Oceanography itself involves the full spectrum of physical, biological, and earth sciences in their formal, empirical, and applied manifestations. The contributors to Oceanographic History: The Pacific and Beyond undertake the interdisciplinary task of telling the story of oceanography’s past, drawing on diverse methodologies. Their essays explore the concepts, techniques, and technologies of oceanography, as well as the social, economic, and institutional determinants of oceanographic history. Although focused on the Pacific, the geographic range of subjects is global and includes Micronesia, East Africa, and Antarctica; the bathymetric range comprises inshore fisheries, coral reefs, and the "azoic zone." The seventy-one contributors represent every continent of the globe except Antarctica, bringing together material on the history of oceanography never before published.
