Ruttenber, in his history of Orange County, under the head of Washington's Headquarters, on pages 988 and 984 says: A large, and in some departments valuable collection of manuscripts and relics is now deposited in the building, for which, as well as for the initial steps, by which the State authorities were induced to purchase the property, the public are mainly indebted to the late Enoch Carter, although many other articles of value have been added by other parties, and especially by the State and Federal authorities. That the statement above made in respect to the collee tion of relics and manuscripts gathered in the building is correct, the writer believes, for Mr. Carter's large heart and public spirit and patriotic impulses were well known. That they went beyond those of his fellow townsmen at the time, in respect to his efforts to gain possession for the State, of the Headquarters property itself, the writer also knows. He further knows that while Mr. Carter was heartily in sympa thy with the movement to gain such possession, the public are (not) mainly indebted to him for the intitial steps by which the State authorities were induced to purchase the property, but to another person, as the following article will most conclusively show.
