Decatur volunteers participated in six major campaigns including the Black Hawk War (1832), the Mexican War (1846–1848), the Civil War (1861–1865), the Spanish-American War (1898), World War I (1917–1918), and World War II (1941–1945). Their record of distinguished service includes the presence of five generals and six Congressional Medal of Honor winners in the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the first national veterans' organization, was founded in Decatur immediately after the Civil War. In World War II, soldiers from Decatur served in North Africa, Italy, the Philippines, and Germany. Equally impressive, however, is the tradition of the Decatur Canteen, which served food to transient soldiers from the time of the Civil War onward. Local volunteers rolled bandages, collected food, and recycled bales of paper and heaps of scrap metal. Citizens planted victory gardens and bought war bonds and savings stamps. Sherman might have called an afternoon dash, but one which killed and mangled only several hundred men. The Battle of Decatur was foredoomed to oblivion as a sideshow to the great and famous Battle of Atlanta. That epic pageant, fought simultaneously that hot summer afternoon six miles to the west of Decatur and involving tens of thousands of combatants, is portrayed vividly in the Atlanta Cyclorama and numerous books. Amidst the later historic drama of the death struggle for Atlanta in the summer of 1864, the Battle of Decatur was seemingly forgotten almost before the gun smoke cleared and the dead were buried. Among the many published accounts of the Battle of Atlanta, the Battle of Decatur is often given only a brief mention or even omitted altogether. The tale has elements of a great story: A smaller force attacked by a much larger force. Tremendous human courage and tragedy. A bayonet charge. AMedal of Honor won. The Battle of Decatur is linked to one of the great horrors of the Civil War, Georgia's Andersonville prison. Most of the Federals captured by the Confederates at Decatur were sent to that hell-hole, and many met their deaths there. The battle is also linked to the greatest maritime disaster in American history, the Sultana explosion, in whicha sidewheel steam ship carrying freed Federal prisoners of war back to their homes blew up on the Mississippi River, claiming more lives thanthe sinking of the Titanic. And most don't know the battle's connection to modern American pop culture: American Idol star Kelly Clarkson'sgreat-great-great grandfather and uncle fought in the battle. One survived, the other died.Other participants in the Battle of Decatur went on to lead notable post-war lives and to become nationally prominent figures who shapedlate 19th century American political, business and military events. Among the Federals, Colonel (later General) John W. Sprague, who commandedthe Federal forces during the battle, later helped settle the American northwest as a founder of the city of Tacoma, Washington. Jeremiah Rusk, second in command of one of the Federal regiments in the battle, later became governor of Wisconsin and the first-ever U.S. secretary ofagriculture. That regiment's commanding officer, Milton Montgomery, founded what's now the oldest law firm in Omaha, Nebraska. Other participantsbecame members of Congress or state politicians. One became a close business associate of the great steel magnate Andrew Carnegie.Among the Confederates, General Joseph Wheeler after the war helped to reconcile the North and South as a member of Congress and played arole in one of the U.S. Army's first overseas invasions in Cuba. Decatur resident Mary A.H. Gay, who was in the town at the time of the battle,later wrote a book based on what she saw that inspired Margaret Mitchell's creation of the character Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With TheWind," one of the top-selling novels of all time.That is the impetus for this book, the first book-length treatment of the Battle of Decatur, its participants and the aftermath it had on them.

His short and dramatic life is a story of triumph and tragedy told by the noted historian and author of some twenty books, Spencer Tucker. Decatur's raid into Tripoli Harbor in 1804 to burn the Philadelphia, a prized U.S. warship captured when it ran aground during the Barbary Wars, earned him international fame. Rather than focus on the well-known frigate duels and fleet engagements, Thomas Sheppard emphasizes the overlooked story of the institutional formation of the Navy. Sheppard looks at civilian control of the military, and how this concept evolved in the early American republic. For naval officers obsessed with honor and reputation, being willing to put themselves in harm's way was never a problem, but they were far less enthusiastic about taking orders from a civilian Secretary of the Navy. Accustomed to giving orders and receiving absolute obedience at sea, captains were quick to engage in blatantly insubordinate behavior towards their superiors in Washington. The civilian government did not always discourage such thinking. The new American nation needed leaders who were zealous for their honor and quick to engage in heroic acts on behalf of their nation. The most troublesome officers could also be the most effective during the Revolution and the Quasi and Barbary Wars. First Secretary of the Navy Benjamin Stoddert tolerated insubordination from "spirited" officers who secured respect for the American republic from European powers. However, by the end of the War of 1812, the culture of the Navy's officer corps had grown considerably when it came to civil-military strains. A new generation of naval officers, far more attuned to duty and subordination, had risen to prominence, and Stoddert's successors increasingly demanded recognition of civilian supremacy from the officer corps. Although the creation of the Board of Navy Commissioners in 1815 gave the officer corps a greater role in managing the Navy, by that time the authority of the Secretary of the Navy--as an extension of the president--was firmly entrenched.
