In this context, Svenja Goltermann has taken up a particularly delicate topic, German soldiers’ experience of violence during the war, and repercussions of this experience after their return home. Part I of her book explores the ways in which veterans’ experiences of wartime violence reshaped everyday family life, involving family members in complex ways. Part II offers an extensive analysis of the psychiatric response to this new category of patient, and in particular the reluctance of psychiatrists to recognize the psychic afflictions of former POWs as constituting the grounds for long-term disability. Although this sounds a little like good son, bad son, nothing is so clear cut. Chris doesn't understand the hatred from his brother, equally well, Keith is in the same quandry. As the story unravels and things become clear, disaster overtakes the family. This keeps you turning the pages with eager anticipation and as the story is told mainly with 'conversation', we are left in no doubt as to the feelings of each character. A beautiful story, well written and a must for every romantic/mystery reader.

The volunteer may struggle mightily to be understood, but his attempts can be for naught if he misunderstands the framework of his role. Unfortunately, in spite of Peace Corps training, the only way a Peace Corps volunteer can understand the framework of his or her Peace Corps role is to live inside it, or even, as in the case of author James Jouppi, return to the site where he was stationed without the trappings of Peace Corps. In August of 1971, Jouppi arrived in Thailand as part of Peace Corps Thailand Group 38, a civil engineering group slated to work in the most communist-sensitive and most poverty-stricken areas of Thailand for Thailands Community Development Department.
