Book Poet Warrior A Memoir

Download or read book Poet Warrior A Memoir written by Joy Harjo and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National bestseller An ALA Notable Book Three-term poet laureate Joy Harjo offers a vivid, lyrical, and inspiring call for love and justice in this contemplation of her trailblazing life. Joy Harjo, the first Native American to serve as U.S. poet laureate, invites us to travel along the heartaches, losses, and humble realizations of her "poet-warrior" road. A musical, kaleidoscopic, and wise follow-up to Crazy Brave, Poet Warrior reveals how Harjo came to write poetry of compassion and healing, poetry with the power to unearth the truth and demand justice. Harjo listens to stories of ancestors and family, the poetry and music that she first encountered as a child, and the messengers of a changing earth—owls heralding grief, resilient desert plants, and a smooth green snake curled up in surprise. She celebrates the influences that shaped her poetry, among them Audre Lorde, N. Scott Momaday, Walt Whitman, Muscogee stomp dance call-and-response, Navajo horse songs, rain, and sunrise. In absorbing, incantatory prose, Harjo grieves at the loss of her mother, reckons with the theft of her ancestral homeland, and sheds light on the rituals that nourish her as an artist, mother, wife, and community member. Moving fluidly between prose, song, and poetry, Harjo recounts a luminous journey of becoming, a spiritual map that will help us all find home. Poet Warrior sings with the jazz, blues, tenderness, and bravery that we know as distinctly Joy Harjo.

Book excerpt: As long as humankind has recorded the written word, the warrior has been admired as the embodiment of some of the best aspects of human beings. They have demanded and demonstrated the great qualities and possibilities of moral human action such as courage, loyalty, determination and intelligence. Writers of all kinds and natures have recorded the deeds of these great warriors as models of manly behavior and chivalrous ideals. The great names of history are the names of fighters and warriors. Read what warriors - Western and Eastern, obscure and famous, admirable and despicable - have said about themselves and others. Be inspired by the words of such important figures from Alexander the Great to General George Patton. Benefit from the pithy strategic wisdoms of Xenophon, Miyamoto Musahi, Sun Tzu and Napoleon Bonaparte. Enjoy the wit of Winston Churchill, and the philosophical and spiritual musings of Marcus Aurelius and King David. Amara challenges women to be 'warrior goddesses', to be a woman who: • Ventures out to find herself • Combats fear and doubt • Reclaims her power and vibrancy • Demonstrates her strength of compassion and fierce love Her approach draws on the wisdom from Buddhism, Toltec wisdom and ancient earth-based goddess spirituality, and combines them all with the goal of helping women become empowered, authentic and free. Book A Dose of Inspiration

  • Release : 2019-06-13

  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book A Dose of Inspiration written by Roman Rozell and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a former Green Beret set out to write a motivational book on the Warrior Lifestyle? What could I possibly have to say that has not been said a million times before? Possibly nothing new. Perhaps even hopefully nothing new. After all, those things that are "new," frequently turn out to be new to our time only. In the past, however, the ideas have already been presented and left wanting from lack of application. My hope is not necessarily to write something new, if by that I mean ideas that nobody has ever heard of before. My goal is to present old truths from a new perspective. You see, many books have been written about motivating yourself, fulfilling your dream, living up to your potential, and so on. Many more are being published every week. It seems, however, that most of these books are by wealthy, prestigious, famous people or by someone who is connected to those criteria. The exception to this rule is the underdog, who fought and clawed his or her way to overcome adversity and lived to tell about it. It's easy to put the formula and work in order when you are financially comfortable. Les Brown said, "Money is not important, but it's right up there with oxygen!"What about the books written for the normal people? The people with no prestige? The outcasts, the workers behind the scenes, the people with no wealth or resources to ponder the deeper things in life because they're to busy working to survive? In my experience as a disabled vet, college student-athlete, husband, and father of 7, there are not many books or podcasts by those criteria.I have read many books encouraging people to grow and develop, and I have been very blessed by some of the authors. But I always feel inadequate. If only I spent more time in prayer. If only I meditated more. If only I read more books. If only I could go to more workshops... If only...I have a job outside of what is considered "full-time motivational speaking," although, as I will explain, really we are all full-time motivators. I have a family to attend to. I have other things that vie for my time and attention. That is not to say that those in paid positions to motivate and inspire don't have those things, but part of their job is to study strategies, spend time in writing and developing new ways to inspire and reach people, and so on. I don't have that luxury. Before anyone accuses me of thinking that paid motivators are without problems, I know that is not true. There are administrative tasks to think of, speaking engagements, book deadlines to meet, and things to learn to stay relevant. I am not saying that paid motivator positions are easy; I am just saying that it seems that being inspired and living up to your potential is more natural in an environment where your job is solely to motivate and get paid for it.But as I read books by motivational speakers, athletes, and entertainers, I cannot help but feel inadequate or confused. After all, the main examples we see of people really chasing their dreams are celebrities reinventing themselves or athletes re-signing to a different team for a bigger pay off. Is it possible to live a complete warrior lifestyle as a "normal" person with a "normal" job? I say yes. This Dose of Inspiration is an attempt by a "normal" guy (although my family and friends might question that) to share my thoughts and experiences of what it means to dream big, set goals, and achieve them while still facing the realities of life.
