Book Beware of the Crocodile

Download or read book Beware of the Crocodile written by Martin Jenkins and published by Candlewick. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore an informative, playfully illustrated story about one of the world’s most dangerous animals: the crocodile. You probably know a little about crocodiles already. They’re reptiles, they have an awful lot of teeth, and they’re pretty scary — at least, the big ones are! They’re not very fussy about what they eat, and when it comes to hunting down dinner, crocodiles are very determined . . . and very cunning. But there’s more to crocodiles than just their appetites. They love to nap on warm sandbanks and cool off in calm waters, and crocodile mothers are very gentle with their babies. This fascinating look at one of Earth’s most infamous creatures is full of information for amateur scientists, with back matter that includes an index, notes on species, and suggestions for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2018 LUCIEN STRYK ASIAN TRANSLATION PRIZE The English-language premiere of Qiu Miaojin's coming-of-age novel about queer teenagers in Taiwan, a cult classic in China and winner of the 1995 China Times Literature Award. An NYRB Classics Original Set in the post-martial-law era of late-1980s Taipei, Notes of a Crocodile is a coming-of-age story of queer misfits discovering love, friendship, and artistic affinity while hardly studying at Taiwan’s most prestigious university. Told through the eyes of an anonymous lesbian narrator nicknamed Lazi, this cult classic is a postmodern pastiche of diaries, vignettes, mash notes, aphorisms, exegesis, and satire by an incisive prose stylist and major countercultural figure. Afflicted by her fatalistic attraction to Shui Ling, an older woman, Lazi turns for support to a circle of friends that includes a rich kid turned criminal and his troubled, self-destructive gay lover, as well as a bored, mischievous overachiever and her alluring slacker artist girlfriend. Illustrating a process of liberation from the strictures of gender through radical self-inquiry, Notes of a Crocodile is a poignant masterpiece of social defiance by a singular voice in contemporary Chinese literature.

Download or read book Song of the Crocodile written by Nardi Simpson and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'SONG OF THE CROCODILE is a moving, wise and deeply rewarding novel from an astonishing writer' - Emily Maguire, author of AN ISOLATED INCIDENT Darnmoor, The Gateway to Happiness. The sign taunts a fool into feeling some sense of achievement, some kind of end- that you have reached a destination in the very least. Yet as the sign states, Darnmoor is merely a gateway, a waypoint on the road to where you really want to be. Darnmoor is the home of the Billymil family, three generations who have lived in this 'gateway town'. Race relations between Indigenous and settler families are fraught, though the rigid status quo is upheld through threats and soft power rather than the overt violence of yesteryear. As progress marches forwards, Darnmoor and its surrounds undergo rapid social and environmental changes, but as some things change, some stay exactly the same. The Billymil family are watched (and sometimes visited) by ancestral spirits and spirits of the recently deceased, who look out for their descendants and attempt to help them on the right path. When the town's secrets start to be uncovered the town will be rocked by a violent act that forever shatters a century of silence. Full of music, Yuwaalaraay language and exquisite description, Song of the Crocodile is a lament to choice and change, and the unyielding land that sustains us all, if only we could listen to it. 'In Song of the Crocodile, Yuwaalaraay author Nardi Simpson makes a lightning debut.' - Kill Your Darlings

Book When a Crocodile Eats the Sun

Download or read book When a Crocodile Eats the Sun written by Peter Godwin and published by Back Bay Books. This book was released on 2008-04-10 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his father's heart attack in 1984, Peter Godwin began a series of pilgrimages back to Zimbabwe, the land of his birth, from Manhattan, where he now lives. On these frequent visits to check on his elderly parents, he bore witness to Zimbabwe's dramatic spiral downwards into the jaws of violent chaos, presided over by an increasingly enraged dictator. And yet long after their comfortable lifestyle had been shattered and millions were fleeing, his parents refuse to leave, steadfast in their allegiance to the failed state that has been their adopted home for 50 years. Then Godwin discovered a shocking family secret that helped explain their loyalty. Africa was his father's sanctuary from another identity, another world. When a Crocodile Eats the Sun is a stirring memoir of the disintegration of a family set against the collapse of a country. But it is also a vivid portrait of the profound strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.

Book THE FREE CROCODILE

  • Author : Steffen Pichler
  • Publisher : ZEIS Verlag
  • Release : 2021-11-13
  • ISBN : 3947430442
  • Pages : 148 pages

Download or read book THE FREE CROCODILE written by Steffen Pichler and published by ZEIS Verlag. This book was released on 2021-11-13 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, Steffen Pichler travelled the most remote coasts of the planet by sea kayak and fed on nature. In the far north-east of Australia, he extensively encountered the largest reptiles on earth, the saltwater crocodiles. Thereby he made a spectacular discovery that may seem absurd at first glance: This animal, suited with enormous physical power and a fearsome appearance, has adapted, both in anatomy and behaviour, in ways to ensure that it disturbs and damages weaker lifeforms in its environment as little as possible, for an absolute apex predator on the very top of the ecological food pyramid. This can be demonstrated seamlessly in all characteristics of anatomy as well as behaviour, which in this respect could not be improved even theoretically. In everyday life, it is evident in extreme inconspicuousness, calmness and restraint. But even the killing of the prey, which is unavoidable in the ecological top position, occurs so surprisingly and quickly that the suffering produced could not be less. Pichler proves, also on the basis of his photographs of free-living saltwater crocodiles, that all this is the result of an evolutionary adaptation to the most fundamental laws of animate nature and that precisely here lies the true reason for the unprecedented permanence of the life form "crocodile" at the top of the food pyramid with numerous species for over 250 million years. He shows that these laws must have ordered life since its beginnings and that they can be described in a similarly concrete way as is possible with the already known physical laws of the space-time structure, such as gravity. A reflection that opens up a huge field of possible knowledge that has not yet been tapped in the natural sciences. In this way, the true core cause of all the present problems of civilisation becomes recognisable and even greater dangers become visible, which have arisen through the disregard of the said laws of nature. And finally, the reflection even leads beyond the observable world of the universe - in a serious approach based on pure observation and logic. Pictures and more: www.saltwatercrocodile.info
